Tim Burton Directing 'Dark Shadows?'

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:21 PM

Tim Burton has been rumored of late to be the director of a film version of Dark Shadows, the 60's British Goth soap opera that featured vampires in its canon. Adding credence to this theory is the fact that the property has been optioned by Johnny Depp's production company, Infinitum-Nihil, who has been developing the script with Warner Bros.

Depp will presumably play Barnabas Collins, the head of the vampires, in the remake. This should be right up Burton's alley. Now, it remains to be seen if we will get classic Tim Burton, who returned to form with Sweeney Todd, or the one who's been directing bad films for the better part of the past decade.

You really nailed it with the last line. Sweeney Todd was the only good thing he's done lately. And I'd say I'm a Burton fan. Well, I wasn't saying that for a while. I mean- Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? What the hell was he thinking? Alice in Wonderland is in Pre-production right now. He'll probably ruin that one too. Dark Shadows is right up his alley. He needs to make dark movies. He sucks at bright ones.

i concur with Trickrodd, Tim Burton's expertise is Horror/German Expressionism; Nosferatu and Dr. Caligari type stuff. and there are some things you CAN'T add that style to (such as a story about apes, or a demented candy factory owner.) now Batman...that was a contemporary concept it worked for. but THIS, sounds right up his ally in a Sweeney Todd and Nightmare Before Christmas type way.

This will be awesome. I loved watching the 1991 Dark Shadows.

Johnny Depp is perfect for this. I hope they find a decent actress for Victoria Winters. Joanna Going was smokin hot. Actually, she still is. Maybe they will get her. :-)
