'RE5' Producer: Sixaxis Not Good Enough for FPS Aiming

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 10:07 AM

Apparently, Capcom was at least considering Sixaxis aiming for Resident Evil 5, but feels the motion controls aren't as sensitive as they'd like.

Jun Takeuchi, producer, said that the Sixaxis "was not quite sensitive enough" for aiming.

Things are proceeding smoothly, however, on the PS3 version. Jun said, "We're really pleased with it, and certainly as with other developers we did have problems getting to grips with it at first, but now understanding how it works it allows us to do a lot of things we couldn't do before."

Also, be sure to check out our new Resident Evil 5 screenshots here.

Where do you stand on Sixaxis controls? Personally, I don't like them at all. It didn't work for me on Warhawk, Lair, or any other game that used the motion controls for anything significant.

Kojima seems to have the right idea with using the Sixaxis to remove Snake's camo by shaking the controller. He'll probably have a few more surprises for the controller, but we'll have to wait and see.

Then don't use them.

SIXAXIS works best with Warhawk.

DualShock 3 = The best controller in existence!

The sixaxis is really underused and not fully realized. Warhawk I have to say is the best for the sixaxis. MGS4 from what I've read, seems to be incoporating it in new and innovative ways. Though this shouldn't be a problem on the Wii though.

The Suxasses more like it.......

Posted by staychisel - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 12:55 PM
the six-axis just seemed like a bad idea from the start

Posted by SourProphit - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:02 PM
It really is best utilized for mundane processes, like in Resistance for bringing up the map or GRAW for rolling when you're prone.

Nothing's worse than having a key function of the game controlled by an unreliable interface (I'm looking at you, DOA4 with 360 D-pad....)

Hmmm...even though ive never used a sixaxis, I can safely bet that I wouldnt like it.
I don't even like the Wiimote.

I just don't like motion controls.
Then again, if its implemented correctly I guess it wouldn't really matter.

"the six-axis just seemed like a bad idea from the start"

Funny. That's very similar to what the doctor said to your mom after she farted you out.

Sony just did not have a good game plan in general im sorry but its true if u look at how they launched.

The commercials where u could see the Ps3's uberpower decoding a rubix cube? No games though for about 2 months after the launch.
Cant show what u dont have i guess.
Somebody went to 4 years of college in advertising and thought that up.

They can turn this ship around i think but they need to stop with all this Playstation world shat and six axis gayness and get back to doing what made them a powerhouse in the first place tons of good games.

alright fan boys, chill out. dont let someone else's difference of opinion offend you. You are getting distracted from real issues like, why you think the six-axis was ever a brilliant move.

For the record, I own a ps1, ps2, ps3 and psp. But Im sure that by verbalizing my views you retards will still chalk me up as an "x-bot".

what the hell would sixaxis aiming be exactly? theres no ir camera in a sixaxis ... the wiimote would not be anywhere near sufficient for aiming based on motion sensing alone ... i dont think the most expensive and sophisticated used of accelerometers possible would allow you to use a motion sensing device for aiming ... this "story" is the most rediculous thing ive seen all week... they might as well break the news that my dinner plate is not sensitive enough for fps aiming ...

Posted by Smartguy81 - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 2:01 PM
I don't think the sixaxis makes for a good control method of aiming in an FPS. It works well in WarHawk but I don't think it translates well into FPS aiming or core gameplay.

I'm happy they are nixing this btw.

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 2:16 PM
@LePooFlinger

the wii made motion control work... so why would sony's motion control be a bad idea to start with.... the sixaxis is substantually better than older 3rd party motion controllers.. so it is an improved tech and will work well in curtain apps... If they thought it was a lost cause they would have dropped it when the DS3 came out...

and your post was more like an x-bots than a logical person expressing their opinion on why they think the sixaxis was not a brilliant idea...

Posted by capthavic - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 2:39 PM
Dear Sony,
Just stop with the Sixaxis. You're not Nintendo so quit pretending to be. The only game it has been any good in is Warhawk. Everything else has just been a gimmicky mess.
So please, for the sake of gaming just forget the Sixaxis and give us back the rumble pack. Thank you.

Posted by blakseed - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 2:50 PM
Im glad they decided not to use the six axis for aimingit would be okay if you can chose to turn it off.

Posted by tarshimo - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 2:51 PM
@ulrichgaming

one your a retard and are just trying to start a flame war, and two LePooFlinger is making a solid opinion and he called it and you labeled him an "x-bot"
(by the way I do own a ps3 and I think the motion controls are a gimmick)

Posted by tarshimo - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 2:53 PM
and on a different note some of those pictures resemble the plaga from RE4, like pics 11,22

Posted by blakseed - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 2:54 PM
Based on the screen shots, the game is looking like a cant miss. kind of like MGS4.

Posted by TheRufio - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 3:17 PM
The only reason the sixaxis works well in Warhawk is because they actually spent time implementing its use into the game. Most games just throw it in their as after thought.

Posted by kobebryantyanic - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 3:24 PM
Man, can't wait for this game. Glad to know that the developpers are finally familiar with the ps3. I can't tell y'all how many times i've beaten re4 on the ps2.

Posted by blakseed - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 4:05 PM
I beat RE4 so much i ran out of stuff to unlock.
That was a fun game.

Posted by Mega_X - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 4:12 PM
if you want motion controls done right you go for the wii, not the ps3.

Posted by husker_360 - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 4:15 PM
Not new. Pick up a game informer G4 Gosh!!!

Posted by CPRxChris - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 4:43 PM
@ JTHMROCKS

I AM NOT gonna say that your gonna love it, however sixaxis is a different piece of technology from the Wii's IR.

And to the people who think the PS3 stole motion-sensing from the Wii, Sony patented it before Nintendo. Nintendo, however, took the ball and ran with it.

Posted by collinE - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 4:53 PM
it only seems to work for the small stuff. like shaking chimera off or push forward to melee.

Even with the wii I hate having to control my character with motion. there's no frame of reference. with analog sticks, you let go and you're at center. you push the stick until it stops and thats all the way.

With motion, it hard to know if you can turn sharper or not, so you keep twisting that controller to go sharper and you don't. If you're not sitting straight up, then you'll never get back to center.

Posted by mac11s - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 4:54 PM
hey remember the rumor on the ps3 wii like controller mhmm... maybe sony would upgrade their controller who know it smells like a fishhyy./... lolz

Posted by emk2008 - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 5:29 PM
motion control sucks balls all around wii sucks with all its games except sports ps3 has warhawk and its ok but still perf ds and xbox new motion will blow 2 its only good for in game mini games

Posted by B00MR1D3 - Tuesday, June 03, 2008 8:53 PM
wow im bored of all this fanboy comments, im going to play more games on my ps3. And you know theres a bright side in owning a ps3 and that is No Freaking Xbox Fanboys to ruin my gaming console.

Posted by audallas84 - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 1:25 AM
Ulrichgaming, you can't go around putting labels on people just because they don't agree with you. It makes you look ignorant.

To the "x-bots" credit, they didn't post anything negative for almost an hour after you bashed them for having a different opinion, or liking something as petty as a different game console than you.

Please, for the sake of the rest of us, grow up.

As for the sixaxis controller, the difference between Sony's motion controls and Nintendo's motion controls is that Nintendo's actually are used properly. The only PS3 game I've played that the motion controls seem to work well is Warhawk, everything else has been a bit of a mess. That's not Sony's fault per se, more on the game developer's side of things, but it still doesn't help.

Posted by audallas84 - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 1:28 AM
BOOMR1D3, I would bet that those Xbox Fanboys could say the exact same thing about you.

Posted by Neoshine - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 4:16 AM
Not sensitive enough? Does that mean it needs emotion counciling? How sensitive does a controller NEED to be for Aiming in a FPS? Point the gun at it and shoot. Jeeeeeez.

It works well in other games, but if They don't want it, then...dont...use it?

Posted by staychisel - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 4:50 AM
i still think sony should retire the six-axis, just let it rest in peace and never bring it up again

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 7:04 AM
@tarshimo

if you read I did not lable pooflinger as an x-bot... I was pointing out that his statement was like an x-bots because he didn't explain...

"why you think the six-axis was ever a brilliant move."

ok that's a question, but if he is asking it, and giving his opinion shouldn't he tell us why he thinks this...? instead of going on to say how many PS he has... or how he'll be labled... as far as I can tell he gave no more of an opinion than LoveLifeMusic with his

"The Suxasses more like it"

if you can't call that an x-bot/troll remark... then you are
