Music Review: 'Grand Theft Auto IV' Soundtrack

Posted by Rick Damigella - Saturday, June 07, 2008 8:32 AM

Ok, hands up. No, this is not a car-jacking, this is an informal poll. Who plunked down the extra bones for the super deluxe kick-ass limited edition of Grand Theft Auto IV? Yep, me too. Now granted, the real reason to get this version was the replica safety deposit box the game came packed in, but Rockstar, being the rock stars that they are, saw fit to include a CD called “The Music of Grand Theft Auto IV” inside too.

Usually, game companies don’t make enticing bonus discs like this available beyond the initial run, but the really good news is, if you didn’t buy the limited edition version of the game, you can still get this album and its same mix of songs via Amazon. If you (all two of you) haven’t yet ventured into Liberty City, here’s a little look at what you aren’t hearing.

The disc is an eclectic mix of hip-hop, dancehall and even jazz fusion, kicking off with the game’s theme, an original composition by Michael Hunter that truly sets the tone for the game each time you load it up. If you are a big hip-hop fan this CD was an absolute score, as it is filled with some bangin’ beats and from both American and Russian rhymers.

The real score here though are some of the more unusual songs that only the uber music aficionados could dig up and get licensed for their game. The mashup of Bob and Damien Marley’s “Stand Up Jamrock” is of particular note as is the jazzy “Holy Thursday” by David Axelrod. So if you want to download a good sampling of what the radio stations of Liberty City are spinning, it will only set you back eight bucks on Amazon. Now Rockstar went well beyond this one set of songs though. Next week, we break down the unique songs on what is my favorite GTA radio station, Vladivostok FM.

GTA has never had good music on it, except of course for Iron Maiden and Slayer on Vice City. To review a GTA soundtrack is like reviewing a cheesy highschool re-enactment of Oliver Twist. So pointless.

If you can't aprecieate GTA's music then I'd have to say you probably have poor taste in music... There is something for everyone on that radio... Tuff Gong and Classic being my favorites. Now that I think about it I guess there may be a generation gap thing going on too. But, Good music trancends time Que No?

Posted by sinister6972 - Saturday, June 7, 2008 10:59 AM

To be honest, you can't go wrong with the music in GTA(in any of them). In my opinion, I think that's one part why the games(GTA) is such a big success. I think that's just pure genius...

you obviously don't like music at all, cause if you can't find a station that you like on the last 4 GTA games you should proly not be playing them. Personally I think the GTA4's soundtrack kicks ass. My favorites are The Beat and Master B and the talkshows have never been better.

Posted by worley - Saturday, June 7, 2008 11:16 AM

Vice City's was the best followed by GTA3 then GTA4 although the Justice track on electro is unbelievable

Posted by slimmer - Saturday, June 7, 2008 11:18 AM

Would like to see the whole soundtrack get put out.
The one that came with the game only had a small amount.
Getting stoned and driving around town listening to the radio is the best.
When is the whole Soundtrack coming out ?

Posted by slimmer - Saturday, June 7, 2008 11:20 AM

Oinkness, open your mind up there little feller or we'll come pry it open for ya.

Posted by xxrevxx - Saturday, June 7, 2008 11:32 AM

i personally think SA's soundtrack was far beyond their best one. im not a fan of country or rap, but i never really found myself needing to change stations because i didn't like the music playing. you just cant beat that. IV's soundtrack is good at best. but i also have to think its the area you live in as well.

Posted by mcp3 - Saturday, June 7, 2008 11:40 AM

Oinkness you must have extremely bad taste in music if you didnt find at least one radio station you liked.

Posted by danielle007 - Saturday, June 7, 2008 12:20 PM

I loooooove the one Slovakian tune "Schwiene" by glukoza or somethng random like that. It's hott.
But who listens to music in GTA? Talk radio is the bester. Makes me laugh everytime. :D

Posted by _tinkertrain_ - Saturday, June 7, 2008 12:37 PM

out of like 16 songs on this CD, only 3 songs are actually good.

David Axelrod's HOLY THURSDAY
Global Connection's 5:23
and hands down the best song is Fela Kuti's ZOMBIE

That song is 12 minutes of pure Afro-Beat deliciousness

Posted by Calaban007 - Saturday, June 7, 2008 1:04 PM

Vice City and San Andreas had the best Soundtracks, I was kind of disappointed in GTA4's soundtrack. I normally listen to the public radio or Lazlow. Liberty City rock sometimes.

Posted by EducatingEric - Saturday, June 7, 2008 2:21 PM

LCHC!

Posted by shamus312 - Saturday, June 7, 2008 4:22 PM

In previous games I stuck with talk stations, but on gta4 I'm really liking Electro Choc, love all the songs on there.

Posted by neonchez - Saturday, June 7, 2008 5:00 PM

WKTT and Liberty City Rock are the only decent music stations in GTA4

Posted by jargy1 - Saturday, June 7, 2008 5:35 PM

Eclectic? That's really how you'd describe it? Cause I bought this abomination with the special edition and other than the theme music the entire thing is garbage. Outside of the one jazz song the rest is varying shades of thumpy crappy rap. It sounds like the same song with different singers for 15 tracks. Absolutely horrible. As far as licensed soundtracks go, GTA4 has the worst ever. The entire game has about 5 songs I can tolerate with only 2 or 3 I actually like. I usually turn the radio off and enjoy the silence. Horrible horrible excuse for music. Using the word music with this garbage is a disgrace to people who actually record music.

Posted by Sintro2 - Saturday, June 7, 2008 6:10 PM

The GTA talk stations are always good, and funny. The ads are great as well. Will these things be included in the soundtrack?

Posted by Gamegodone - Saturday, June 7, 2008 6:15 PM

i was a dumbass and didnt get the limited edition but i got it on amazon.com and it is kickass i like all the songs on it

Posted by blakseed - Saturday, June 7, 2008 7:22 PM

I liked the beat, the vibe, and the broker station. iwas a little disappionted with the music stations, but they had some gems.

Posted by Oinkness - Saturday, June 7, 2008 7:50 PM

Man, my mind is open. That's why I don't like the crud that is on the GTA games. I'd rather listen to the robot voice guy singing "You don't always die from tobacco" than the majority of the GTA soundtracks.

There's no creativity in their music choices whatsoever. You can flip that back on me not being "open minded" enough but they are still crap.

Posted by Oinkness - Saturday, June 7, 2008 7:54 PM

And just for the record, I'm a professional musician.

Posted by paublo_4 - Saturday, June 7, 2008 9:23 PM

I loved Vice city's, San Andreas and IV's sound tracks.
All I listen to on GTA4 is either Liberty rock, Radio Broker, Vladistok and sometimes I'll listen to San Juan Sounds. But recently I finally got around to listening to the talk shows and they are to funny. Just or unjust is my favorite, reminds me of all those judge judy and divorce court things.

Posted by HedgehogEmoness - Saturday, June 7, 2008 11:14 PM

good music=awesome

Posted by JayMitchell - Sunday, June 8, 2008 12:14 AM

I like the music in GTA4, but I think Vice City had the best music. It fit the time period perfectly!!!

I do like The Vibe & IF99.

You just can't go wrong with Fela Kuti!!!

Posted by _tinkertrain_ - Sunday, June 8, 2008 1:26 AM

Vice City did have the best selection of music, i think. V-Rock had was the best radio station in the series

and Oinkness, you professionally suck

Posted by metfan31 - Sunday, June 8, 2008 5:52 AM

"And just for the record, I'm a professional musician."

wow oinkness, I'd like to see things from your point of view but I can't seem to get my head that far up my ass.

respect other peoples tastes.

"You just can't go wrong with Fela Kuti!!!"

LOL!!!!

Posted by s4p13n - Sunday, June 8, 2008 10:07 AM

in my opinion the soundtrack for gta san andreas was the best....

Posted by bipolar93 - Sunday, June 8, 2008 10:35 AM

"And just for the record, I'm a professional musician."
Maybe you're in a crappy wedding band. I'm looking at these comments and I am honestly ashamed to be around you people. Seriously? What genre isn't represented here? And don't tell me country because nobody who listens to country should be playing GTA. How can you not find something you like? Have you looked at the soundtracks from other games and movies? This soundtrack kicks around Garden State. And btw Radio Broker is the best and 'Getaway Driver' is a kickass song.

Posted by bipolar93 - Sunday, June 8, 2008 10:38 AM

And I'm not talking to everybody there most of you are good. And Just or Unjust is amazing. That psychic on PLR gets annoying though.

Posted by enzospartan - Sunday, June 8, 2008 1:21 PM

The in-game stations are awesome. Especially PLR and Integrity 2.0 but the limited edition disc was horrible. It's a rapper's dream and a rock lover's nightmare.

Posted by Balistic_XII - Sunday, June 8, 2008 1:43 PM

This is probably just my music taste, but I can't say I liked the music on the cd. There was like 4 songs I liked. I was also disappointed with most of the channels. I hated LCHC(and for the record, I love metal and rock). I listened to Liberty City Rock(and that just barely made the cut for me), Radio Broker(It had like to songs I liked), and the talk stations. Also, I'm not saying the songs are horrible, just that their horrible to me.

Posted by Shiztacular - Sunday, June 8, 2008 3:25 PM

Everybody has their own opinion but I think its kinda ignorant to say that Rockstar has no taste in music...cuz it definitely took some work to find all these different songs. I've always loved the radio stations.

I loved IV's soundtrack but I think I prefer San Andreas' just because I'm partial to the 90's.

Also gotta say that the inclusion of Bump and Grind is what had me sold.

Posted by ps3_nig - Sunday, June 8, 2008 5:32 PM

THE BEAT!!! kicks ass!! war is necessary by nas kicks ass!! although most of the songs on that staion are kinda short but o well
and the talk stations are hilarious!!

Posted by Redd75 - Sunday, June 8, 2008 5:55 PM

Why am I the only one mentioning the 'Time Traveler' from the VCS soundtrack? Hilarious!
I can't be the only one in here who played LCS and VCS.

Posted by alphacentuari - Sunday, June 8, 2008 10:12 PM

I heard my favorite band of all time, Bad Brains, on the radio in GTAIV yesterday while my girlfriend was playing it and I was just like Hell Yeah!

Posted by jargy1 - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:28 AM

What disappointed me is that every song on a particular station sound pretty much identical. Doubly true for the techno and rap stations. Anytime I turn on the Beat or IF whatever it sounds like the same song is playing. That's not variety and I think that's absolutely representative of music today. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING sounds the same.

@bipolar93
What isn't represented? Actual rock and actual hip hop for starters. And how can you ask that question then automatically rule out a genre? I'm not a country fan in particular but were you aware it's the most popular music in the United States? More people listen to country than anything else so it actually deserves MORE representation than others.

How come we get half of the stations as variations of rap, another 3 or 4 dedicated to bad rock, one half decent rock, a JAZZ station (yet no country?) and several talk stations? I've never even visited a place with such limited selection. GTA4's soundtrack is an epic fail.

vice city had the best music, dj's, and conversations
