Dictators And Mario Kart Wii

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Saturday, May 31, 2008 11:28 AM

On May 16th, we reported that the name Hitler had been banned from Nintendo's Mario Kart Wii online community. In short, if you were playing under a Mii with the word Hitler anywhere in its name, you would not be able to connect to Mario Kart WFC.

We're not debating Nintendo's decision to not allow Hitler on their network. It's the their network and it's their decision. However, is it fair to single out Hitler? Surely, he is not the only mass-murdering dictator in history, or even the 20th Century. What about the others?

TheFeed did some investigating and decided to test out some the 20th Century's other more infamous characters and see how the Mario Kart online community would welcome them. Here are the results of our test:

STALIN

Perhaps the biggest killer of the 20th Century. Poor record keeping in the Soviet Union during his rule has lead to wildly varying reports on the number actually dead as a result of his order. Conservative reports put it as low as 3 million, but the most liberal reports put it somewhere between 20 to 30 million. On average, most scholars agree that the number is somewhere between 10 to 20 million. Despite almost assuredly killing many more people than that little German fellow, Mario Kart WFC welcomed Stalin with open arms.

Death Toll: 10 to 20 Million
Mario Kart Status: ACCEPTED

POL POT

As leader of the dreaded Khmer Rouge through the mid to late 70s, Pol Pot was responsible for the deaths of some 1.7 million of his countrymen (26% of the national population of Cambodia at the time). His horrifying acts are recounted in the award winning 1984 film, The Killing Fields. He died under house arrest in 1998. He came third on Moo Moo Meadows yesterday.

Death Toll: 1.7 Million
Mario Kart Status: ACCEPTED

IDI AMIN

Unlike his portrayer, Forest Whitaker, in The Last King of Scotland, Idi amin really did kill people out of paranoia and downright madness. Convinced that the world was against him, he ordered the deaths of between 300,000 and 500,000 people. Personal accounts say he was a very nice man with a hearty laugh. They also say he was the craziest motherf***er on Creation. He also drives a mean dragster.

Death Toll: 300,000 to 500,000
Mario Kart Status: ACCEPTED

KIM JONG-IL

The current leader of North Korea currently has no official bodycount to his name that we can verify. We can say he made a pretty sweet villain in Team America: World Police. According to his Wikipedia page, he has also composed two operas. We felt obligated to include him only because his Mii is just so darn cute.

Death Toll: no official record
Mario Kart Status: ACCEPTED

CHARLES MANSON

The mastermind behind the Tate-LaBianca murders and head of the so-called "Manson Family". This guy gives Idi Amin a serious run for his money, and is sometimes referred to as "The Craziest Motherf***er this side of the Mississip". He prefers the standard cart when maneuvering through Sherbet Land.

Death Toll: 8
Mario Kart Status: ACCEPTED

OSAMA BIN LADEN

Currently the world's most wanted man, we felt certain that if any other mass-murderer aside from Hitler were not allowed into the glowing, child-like innocent world of Mario Kart, it would be Mr. Al-Queda himself. Turns out we were wrong. Bin Laden quickly took the track and even managed a 2nd place finish.  Too bad; we were hoping he'd lose the race big-time after being hit by million red-shells and lightning bolts.

Death Toll: 3000+
Mario Kart Status: ACCEPTED

While we agree with Hitler being kicked out of the Mario Kart Wii clubhouse, TheFeed does find it odd that these other nefarious men, guilty of some of the most horrific atrocities of the 20th Century, are allowed to roam free throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. What do you guys think? Is it wrong to exclude Mii Hitler or is it wrong to include these other evil bastards?

Yes, they should all be banned from Mario Kart Wii, not like I care. I am perfectly happy playing my PS3.

Posted by arod95 - Saturday, May 31, 2008 12:00 PM

Stalin, Amin, Il, and Manson all look pretty accurate...but Bin laden and Pol Pot look awful

Either way though this is a load of bs

Posted by TheRufio - Saturday, May 31, 2008 12:05 PM

That's pretty funny.

Posted by TheRufio - Saturday, May 31, 2008 12:10 PM

Shouldn't George Bush be on the list?

Posted by Straticus - Saturday, May 31, 2008 12:19 PM

No President Bush shouldnt be on the list, ya damn hippy. Take the kart privileges away from these Mii killer look-a-likes before the mass murder spreads onto the consoles!

Posted by TheRufio - Saturday, May 31, 2008 12:22 PM

What's wrong with a be a hippy, ya damn Nazi?

Correction

What's wrong with being a hippy, ya damn Nazi?

Posted by jodalmighty - Saturday, May 31, 2008 12:32 PM

@Straticus

If the amount of people killed is enough to be a condemnation of the individual and therefore be a good enough reason to ban a persona then George Bush should be on the list as his war on terror has claimed more lives than Bin Laden. And BTW not everyone who disagrees with Bush is a hippy, just like not everyone who supports him is a right wing nut job.

Posted by svtu1919 - Saturday, May 31, 2008 12:46 PM

It's worth noting that the Stalin and Kim ones are blatant ignorance. The widely accepted reports of death tolls came from the Nazis and were used to promote Khrushchev's rise to power. I'm a close friend and pupil of Grover Furr's, he's had direct access to the archives. The 20 million dead were from the war. Don't make blind assumptions. Especially considering that the US and UK are virtually the only countries where he is considered 'Genocidal'..

I think we have a communist here on G4^^^

Posted by shock3755 - Saturday, May 31, 2008 1:57 PM

There is no such thing as a right wing nut job. Thats a myth propagated by the left wing media.

Posted by Straticus - Saturday, May 31, 2008 1:58 PM

@jod Right, well that comment was just hilarious. We are fighting the bad guys unlike every other person on the list brother. So that excludes the President.

@Rufio Nothing wrong with being a hippy I guess, but how am I a nazi??

"He came third on Moo Moo Meadows yesterday."

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! To be honest, I would have to agree. I never seen the other ones. Hmmmm, that's interesting......by the way, I don't want my little newphew duking it out with Stalin! LOL!!!!! Let alone the crazy games out there they have now......LOL!!!

Posted by codemonkeypwnz - Saturday, May 31, 2008 5:16 PM

Oh my God,
The flaming console fights you would all have just started to die down, now you're all fighting about Bush? Bush isn't a murderer but he isn't a good president and since when is Stalin sane? He wiped out almost the entire original board, which HE promoted, in a few years...

Posted by CPRxChris - Saturday, May 31, 2008 5:22 PM

Posted by Spike31589 - Saturday, May 31, 2008 7:23 PM

It would be hillarious if both Kim Jong Il and Bin Ladin were actualy playing mario kart.

Both a Idealist people.

Anyway...Hitler got alot of Flak years ago. His name is almost second to Coca Cola and Mickey Mouse. Too many people to carry on that name. Things are better left Forgotten...

If Nintendo is going to ban the names of people who are considered murderous and evil, then they certainly have their work cut out for them. There have been a lot of bad guys over the years for people to use as Mii characters. This is what happens when you give people anonymity and a character creation system. They turn into total douche bags and make the most offensive characters possible. If Nintendo allowed voice chat capabilities, the races would turn into a storm of curse words and hate speech like XBL. Anyway, Nintendo's decision to allow Mii characters in an online game might come back to haunt them when the mainstream news media finds about the ability to play as some rather dastardly characters in what is one of the more kid friendly games on the market.

Posted by jman3451 - Saturday, May 31, 2008 10:26 PM

honestly i don't care but they still can't stop the Miis from appearing and ppl will be able to hide the name some how like Hit13r or sumthing like that

so in the end Nintendo's efforts will be in vain although it does make for good public realtions

why is it funny to create little virtual repicas of men who killed people?

Posted by Miscellaneous - Sunday, June 1, 2008 4:30 AM

So with Manson safe, I'm guessing Bundy, Gein, Kaczynski, etc are probably safe as well. Let my Psycho Killer Kart army grow!!! (Qu'est-ce que c'est ?)

Posted by xmywreckingballx - Sunday, June 1, 2008 6:26 AM

I think it's o k. It's not like they are being racist or something. And I think Hitler is the most recognizable mass murderer.

Posted by lateralsnowflake - Sunday, June 1, 2008 8:21 AM

That is the cutest Kim I've ever seen.

Doesn't seem so bad when he's reduced to Mii form.

Posted by foxtrot_MGS - Sunday, June 1, 2008 8:37 AM

If anything, this proves TheFeed is actually well educated. This is pretty weird and if Nentindo saw this they would probably get on banning those names, as it only makes sense.
PS-You should have a showdown race of dictators.

Drop Anchor!

Posted by CreamPieBaby - Sunday, June 1, 2008 9:14 AM

all I'm gonna say is, i'm sure all those murderers on that list thought they were fighting/killing "bad guys". who decides who is the "bad guy"? Bush tells you he's fighting bad guys and everyone assumes he's doing the right thing. But here's a question, do you think hitler was telling everyone they were fighting the good guys? the way I see it if you're killing anyone you're the bad guy.

Posted by jodalmighty - Sunday, June 1, 2008 10:10 AM

@CreamPieBaby

Well observed. The easy answer is of course to claim you are fighting "evil" and then people feel that the war is justified. If we were to label the "War on Terror" correctly it would be a lot more like, "The War to Wrap Up the Previous War Which My Daddy Started, Oust a Deranged Dictator, and Kill Hundreds of Thousands of Innocent Civilians, All in the Name of Ending Terror."

Posted by JACKMEOFF - Sunday, June 1, 2008 10:28 AM

you got to LOL at how the wii makes everything cute including mass murders

Posted by Cthulhuman - Sunday, June 1, 2008 11:17 AM

Well hell I don't think hitler should be banned I just think it's funny. Hitler was a very important person in our nation's history and if his supporters want to revel in his victory of not only conquering half the world and continue his reign in the virtual world I say more power to the people.

Posted by gravy666 - Sunday, June 1, 2008 12:08 PM

LMAO this article is hilarious, it deserves a spot on Cracked.com

But you guys forgot Saddam...? lol

Seriously, now, I don't care much whether Hitler is allowed on Mario Kart WFC. Lemme put it this way: He killed and tortured so many people, some are still alive today and they're very old and old people play the Wii a lot, so Hitler shouldn't be allowed. On the other hand, Osama and Stalin allowed on Mario Kart WFC, why not Hitler?

Posted by malaaw - Sunday, June 1, 2008 12:30 PM

Bush just so happens to be sending our army on literally a suicide mission.

@Lavat
We cannot forget history. Hitler did (he did not know what happened to Napoleon when he invaded Russia), which ultimately led to his downfall. Besides, isn't it just so fun to see how people will try to kill each other/get fired next time?

I don't remember him but there are other tyrants(ex. Ivan "The Terrible"). There's a lot actually......hmmmm, I wonder if "Cleopatra" is in there???? Now that's a woman, LOL!!!!

Posted by Lavat - Sunday, June 1, 2008 5:24 PM

What I found interesting about Hitler is that he took a entire nation by his direction himself and single handedly wiped millions of people off the planet.
Him and all those other leaders....Now that is what I aspire to.

Posted by unbiasedplayer0_0 - Sunday, June 1, 2008 5:57 PM

Well, Stalin didnt particularily kill any one group of people, and they were mainly soldiers sent to halt the evils of fascism. /the more you know!

Posted by unexplainedbacon - Monday, June 2, 2008 5:18 AM

haha I like the mole on Manson's head.

Also, to be fair, Manson never committed genocide, and if you include him, you have to include Gacy, Bundy, and Dahmer, not to mention a whole slew of other crazy people

Posted by Courtano - Monday, June 2, 2008 7:57 AM

some guy keeps crewzin around on mario kart w/ a hitler look alike mii and he goes by the name of adolf

Posted by MutantEnemyMTL - Monday, June 2, 2008 9:35 AM

Hitler is in a different league than the rest of them for a bunch of reasons but a major reason for banning him and not other is that Nazism still has followers. They shouldn't be allowed to promote hate using public means so go ahead and ban Hitler.

Posted by Sandrock323 - Monday, June 2, 2008 9:44 AM

Companies need to stop banning and let people solve their own problems. If you don't want to play with some one whose name offends you just leave the lobby. You don't have to punish someone just because your immature.

Posted by Smartguy81 - Monday, June 2, 2008 10:09 AM

@bush haters

You are idiots. It is your American right to not like him. It is an American right to like him. Do not compare Hitler or Stalin to Bush. Hitler killed jews to purify a race. That is insane. Stalin just let his people die. Bush is fighting those who hate the American way of life. What would you have him do? Talk? You can't make headway with people who aren't tolerant of you to begin with. You should all do some self reflection and answer very simple questions before spouting off what you see on TV or read on someone's myspace blog.

Posted by Voitan - Monday, June 2, 2008 12:33 PM

Now that there is a congregation of pure evil in Mario Kart Wii, I demand that a Live contest be held on one of G4's shows (AOTS/X-play).

Posted by LeoCantus - Monday, June 2, 2008 12:55 PM

I wouldn't compare Bush to Stalin or Hitler, but I'd like to point out that saying that he is fighting people who hate the American way of life is a pretty ignorant thing to say. Saying the people of Iraq hate the American way of life is a generalization and stereotype that is not true. It's like saying all American people are fat or all British people have awful oral hygeine. I'd also like to ask
what area we are trying to make headway in with the people of Iraq. On another note, I think that the Mii for Manson is freaky. In a cool way.

Posted by PlayWii360 - Monday, June 2, 2008 1:56 PM

My friend made a Mii out of the prophet Mohammed.

Posted by shock3755 - Monday, June 2, 2008 7:46 PM

@LeoCantus

Christ pick up a news paper once in awhile. We are not fighting the people of Iraq we are fighting extremist groups in Iraq. See they are in what is called a Civil War prehaps you know what one of those is. People like you who have no idea what is really going on in this world or country. Please do me a favor and stay the hell home in November.

Posted by mountaindude07 - Monday, June 2, 2008 8:38 PM

@ Gravy+pointless numbers,
yeah, well seeing as this is TEXT based thread, tone doesn't come into play so it's quite hard to understand what random people say, when typing it is best to Spell it out. get it!
so suicide is pointless, giving up, yada yada,
war on the other always has a reason, whether it be religious, monetary or simply preserving a way of life, i think President Bush handled it better than i would have, i probably would have introduced the world to an upgraded nuclear bomb, i believe the true reason the war started was back in 2001, around September, if i recall, i was only in 8th grade so i don't remember too much about all that went down, and when how the fighting actually began,
please do not say that what my cousin died for his country he was actually committing a pathetic suicide.

on a somehow lighter note, Nazi's are allowed free roam over Nintendows WiFi Channel! :)

Posted by Sandrock323 - Tuesday, June 3, 2008 7:59 AM

@mountaindude07
I was in 7th but if I remember correctly Saddam Hussein admitted to the attack, most likely lairing (moron), and was supporting terrorist training camps that taught how to fly commercial airplanes.
