'WoW' Will Probably Get Graphical Update

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, May 16, 2008 4:27 PM

In an interview with Eurogamer, World of Warcraft producer J. Allen Brack stated that WoW would "probably... need a graphical update from the ground up at some point."

Wrath of the Lich King will include some optional effects for players with high-end PCs, but they are looking to a complete overhaul for the next expansion after Lich King.

Also, next expansion confirmed?

One of the reasons WoW is so successful is that almost any decently equipped computer can run the game. Blizzard's art style makes this work, but it'll be interesting to see if players leave if the game becomes more intensive to run.

There has to be a time when ppl will have to let go of their Commador 64. Even when Myst4 came out ppl where upset that they had to go get a dvd drive to play it even though the dvd drive had been out for 4 years and only cost $20. Some times you have to upgrade to keep up.

But at the same time Blizzard will not want to hurt alot of players/paying customers. They will still keep players happy but will make it better for the ones that do go for the Hot PC's running new tech.

new tech? my 5 year old pc ran that game maxed out, sad.

I don't play it, but my friend does during study halls occasionally, all I can say is , "It's about frigging time!"

Sadly to say but when/if this happens 90% or more of all PC's will be running vista and at this moment vistas MIN req's are higher then WOW.
With that being sadly any computer purchased in the past year up to when this will be done will be able to handle anything that blizz decides to do.
and if you are a custom PC guy well why are you bitching you up grade every 90 days any ways.

screw an expansion after Lich King, Id like to see WoW2, If we could get a full blown sequel then I think there would be major upgrades to the graphics there

A graphic update would be nice, but only if they remember that not ALL players upgrade to play games. I've been thinking of upgrading only becuase my PC REALLY needs it after 5 years. Not a major upgrade, but just a few items that I can afford.

I can only hope that if they update the graphics, it's not something that I won't be able to turn down if my PC can't handle 'the best' in graphics.

Is that guy on crack? 90% of the people will NOT be on vista. Vista just isnt there yet, and even for the fully decked out gamers, they will be getting better benchmarks on XP. http://www.steampowered.com/st atus/survey.html

WoW has to do something to fend off Conan & Warhammer...

Posted by gravy666 - Saturday, May 17, 2008 7:23 AM
Good, it's about time they addressed the problem.

WoW is going to need a graphical update to keep up with newer games, to keep older players, and possibly bring in newer players.

As long as it's optional and allows tweaking (see any FPS), it should be fine.

Posted by bleahy - Saturday, May 17, 2008 11:51 AM
@Bellamorte,

That's a lovely thought, but no... it doesn't.
It certainly doesn't need a graphical update to do this.

Conan looks like it'll have a huge launch, but it won't touch WoW's numbers.

Lich King will boost WoW back up to whatever it loses and probably more.

idk... i still hate the thought about paying to play a game i already paid for... now it would be a different story if the game was free to download or $5 at the store. but no, its like $30? $40? somethin like that?

i paid $40 for diablo 2 back in the day. and they still support the game buy keeping the servers up. why can't all games be like this? I know they do this on going "never ending game" always adding stuff to the game but thats what the expansion packs are for that you pay $40 at the store for.

I wouldn't mind a few graphical updates, and my PC would handle the changes.
Besides, the minumum specs are already rock bottom anyway
800 MHz processor
GeForce 2 or above
512 Mb of RAM
I've seen ultra portable laptops with better stuff than this

WoW: Shadows of Luclin (EQ did the same and had a big player blow out over it)

(I could care less, this 6 yo pc never could run WOW anyways)

@ bleahy,

Yes, I understand you.

However, WoW will not be top dog forever. Gradually, people will seek other games.

Blizzard will lose older players who're sick of Chuck Norris jokes & cartoony visuals.

Huxley, Warhammer, & others will take their toll on the marketshare.

From time to time there is interesting Wow update news at blog.memoryoffset.com

Posted by bleahy - Sunday, May 18, 2008 9:17 AM
@Bellamorte,

It might. A lot of WoW's audience are gamers that have never played an MMO before. They are casual gamers.

Blizzard is also really, really good at staying top dog in a genre they get into.

StarCraft/WC3 are still the top RTS games.
Diablo 2 is still to top isometric RPG.

im playing diablo 2 right now!!

wow and other mmorpg are for total no life losers that just want to sit at their computers everyday allday playing the game, 360 and ps3 owners play the best games but only for a couple of hours a day, big difference, you have to be one lonely scumbag to play wow or other mmorpg

Posted by Velvet_Angst - Monday, May 19, 2008 6:23 AM
@ABYSSAL

I'm sorry to tell you this but I have quite a life, and I'm sure not all people who play WoW are "lonely scumbags" because saying all is a hyperbole, and as my 7th grade English teacher taught me, hyperboles are the biggest mistake you can make in an essay.

I have a job that I go to nearly everyday, and I have friends I spend copious amounts of time with, plus in a matter of the last week I've invested maybe 30 hours into WoW.
