In a not surprising but still tragic move, Philadelphia is shutting down their municipal wifi project. These kinds of initiatives are ahead of their time and in a lot of cases, unnecessary as most metropolitan areas are packed with access already.
The shut down is apparently due to the cost of running it being too high. Well, who didn't do the math on that one? The city will receive no income from it. It's not a sales-driven model that would offset costs, so who decided that was money they could afford to spend and then suddenly decide that they didn't want to spend it.
We're hoping these kinds of projects don't die completely but find a place once we all have iPhone 2.0s that are government issued.
