First Pic: "Guitar Hero IV' Drums

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 8:53 AM

.

That photo above is a scan of Game Informer magazine's upcoming issue. It features Guitar Hero IV's drum peripheral. Check out those cymbals, man. Pretty hot. And five pads means extra fake-drumming fun.

Game Informer was fairly impressed with the layout, and so are we (at least how it looks). The placement of the ride cymbal in Rock Band's peripheral always seemed a problem, so we're glad to see that the drum kit corrects it.

No word yet. on whether the snazzy new buckets will work with Rock Band, of course.

(also, is this a good opportunity to make a "Gee? HIV!" joke?)

HA, I got that mag in the mail yesterday. Screw that man, I aint gonna drop another 160 bucks for another band setup. im sticking with rockband.

Posted by DamienHell - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 9:04 AM

@gamebrain89
agreed, if I have to buy new stuff for GH IV then I'm not getting it, if I can use my rockband stuff though, then I'll get it

Posted by JTHMROCKS - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 9:05 AM

That actually looks pretty impressive.
Now if i could fraking beat hard mode in Roc band, GH2 and GH3, Is seriously consider getting this.

Posted by Gr1d - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 9:17 AM

I'm concerned that with the extra peripherals that Activison won't focus on the part of Guitar Hero that made it fun, GUITAR!!!

Posted by ASXL41 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 9:23 AM

The problem with this is that so many people already paid for Rock Band. It wasn't so bad to have the two different guitars, but I wouldn't have the room for two different drum sets. Harmonix just beat Activision to the punch and might not do so well with something that is already out in most gamers homes. I'm not about to pay for something that I already have and enjoy enough. Rock Band puts out way more DLC and it's just a more fun game than Guitar Hero anway.

Posted by Dr_Perry_Cox - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 9:35 AM

I doubt they will work with Rock Band. Activision doesn't seem to be too keen on that type of stuff.

Posted by liversnot - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:00 AM

um......ok. honestly, i don't care about guitar hero anymore...it was really fun, but i must admit harmonix did it better, i own GH and GH 80s.....2 was my favorite and i don't like the majority of the songs in 3. so i got rock band. the songs are better IMO and the DL content is WAY better, i don't think anyone will argue with that. i like the party game idea, the drumset for gh 4 looks okay but again, IMO who is going to buy that if they have rock band already? this attempt seems to little to late.......just like it was with guitar hero......harmonix made it activision cashed in on it. rock band....harmonix made it and it is awesome....guitar hero is trying to catch up, i dont think it is going to work. besides, what self respecting drummer is going to play drums in a game called guitar hero? kind of steals all the pretend glory doesn't it? anyway, in summery, kit looks interesting, but not going to pay more money for something i already have and love.

Posted by Aerosh0ck - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:07 AM

I know i already bought rock band, but this looks insane. I'm gonna have to fix up my basement to fit this stuff in there.

Posted by fragglerock66 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:13 AM

Will it even be called guitar hero now that they're adding drums?

Posted by xeno975 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:15 AM

ok um... why didnt they do this in the first place instead of making rock band?i mean i would say diffrent if it was made by a diffrent creators but both are made by the same company. its just retarded why would you buy another band set up to take up more space. companies are starting to get dumb.

Posted by ASXL41 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:20 AM

@ Xeno

They are no longer the same company. If you knew what was going on, you would know that Harmonix and Red Octane split last year and went to different developers. Activision can't make Rock Band because EA already did that. Activision owns Guitar Hero.

Posted by BONERJAM - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:35 AM

The name GUITAR HERO doesn't really apply anymore, the drums do look cool thou.

Posted by xeno975 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:41 AM

@ASXL41
oh dang my bad that i dont keep up with the game politics.. but i still find it a waste... cuz in the end you still playing the same game. :) but i appriciate you keeping up to date. no sarcasm intended.

Posted by xeno975 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:43 AM

aww i wish you could go back and change your typing mistake cuz i left out the me. but oh well you know what i meant.

Posted by Warheart1188 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:43 AM

They should rename it Rock Band 2

Posted by cxhxexexsxe - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:46 AM

ripoff of drumania

Posted by xmywreckingballx - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:52 AM

Now that we're at the point where Guitar Rising lets you play a real guitar, why doesn't guitar hero separate its guitar hero franchise from its drum simulator and make an actual game that teaches you real drums. They are just copying Rock Band, and in this world you only get ahead by 1uping the other guy. So guitar hero iv, please take it further than rock band, or you will embarrass yourself.

Posted by the_american_420 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 11:02 AM

I thank this was a good idea for gitar hero...but...i thant rock band is better but i rather learn how to play a real drumb set and gitars.

Posted by changbang - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 11:13 AM

gh4= rock band rip off

Posted by Asrugan - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 11:16 AM

I think in both companies interests, they need to keep the peripherals compatible.

Posted by changbang - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 11:35 AM

@asrugan

but of course you know activision wont let their controllers work with rb, because theyd want to be 'compensated' for the use of their products, just like the whole patch harmonix almost sent out before activision said no 'we want money'

Posted by BIG_JuLY - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 11:40 AM

The truth is that rock band is rock bad...is a "BAND" guitar hero is suppose to be a guitar i think people are not going to waist more money on some more drum sets i think their going to stick with rock band.

Posted by maxjive - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 1:17 PM

I thought they should've went with Rhythm, Lead, and Bass guitar...but no vocals or drums.

This would've separated them from Rock Band in way that still makes you want to play both for different reasons. Now they're just gonna be the same game with competing song licenses.

On the original topic..I like the drums! It makes sense to have cymbal pads for the cymbals, but how are they gonna treat 6 buttons? I guess five across like guitar plus the orange line for the bass?

Posted by VORNSTAR7 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 2:02 PM

sad very sad

Posted by jneditch - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 2:09 PM

Those are the stupidest looking set of drums I have ever seen! Who ever designed those should be fired immediately!

Posted by xSniper209LHSx - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 2:34 PM

are we able to use rock band instruments on GH4? im gnna buy gh aerosmith then i am also going to buy gh 4...only the cheaper version though

Posted by Apsalus07 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 2:58 PM

I think they're gonna call it "Rock Hero" LOL.

Posted by dialupinator - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 3:03 PM

This is just another one of Activision's plans to get more profit. They think that by waving this in front of kids' faces, saying things like "It's Guitar Hero...WITH DRUMS!!!!" or "It has Fall Out Boy in it!!!" that the money will start rolling in, making a bigger castle of money than EA.

For those with short intention spans, here's a summary: Guitar Hero + drums = EPIC FAIL grrrr

Posted by Jubilantgravestone - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 3:28 PM

I just hope this KILLS the franchise. When I say kill, I mean BRUTALLY MURDERS. I was a fan of Guitar Hero, and Guitar Hero 2, but 3 just wasn't fun because IT WAS REALLY FREAKING DIFFICULT. I got Rock Band which was f-ing amazing. The Guitar Hero franchise deserves to die for its copycat plan/transgression.

Posted by 1mikeg - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 6:48 PM

I predict in the next 5 years a large percentage of gamers will own a ridiculously huge virtual drum kit. You know, like the ones you see in Def Leppard and Metallica videos, but made of black plastic and pads.

Posted by Maikol - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 11:19 PM

oh no no no.

whats next? are they going to add vocals too?

Posted by Undertaker4 - Thursday, May 15, 2008 8:53 AM

no there not going to add vocals miakol or else then they are just going to be copying rock band which i found was the biggest peice of cheap s#@t ever

After curing A-F, people are now starting to get GHIV. More info after the break.

People getting GHIV

Posted by insight2881 - Thursday, May 15, 2008 9:49 AM

Weazel News: The Question on every gamers tongue is "Do u have it?" The gaming disease previously thought to be wiped out is back for the 7th time. GHIV is spreading like wildfire...

Posted by Asrugan - Thursday, May 15, 2008 11:02 AM

Actually, they are adding vocals, according to Kotaku.

Posted by gregory20 - Thursday, May 15, 2008 7:05 PM

Even though I had to dish $160 for Rockband with create a song this one I think will be some competition for Rockband. I'm making room in my basement

Posted by Reiden - Friday, May 16, 2008 2:05 PM

How lame. I like guitar hero because its intense guitar playing, and Rock Band because of its variaty. Now that GH has drums, I have two variety games with no insane guitar.

Posted by jcb231 - Friday, May 16, 2008 9:49 PM

I refuse to buy another set of drums. Microsoft and Sony need to police these peripherals, as we are fast approaching burnout. I think the most any gamer should be expected to buy is one or two guitars and a set of drums. Microphones should always be standard USB mics like the typical headset, guitars should work across all games, and good lord in heaven there only needs to be one style of drum controller. There's no way Rock Band drums can be used for this game...RB drums have four pads and a pedal. This kit has five pads and a pedal. There's no possible way to hit that fifth pad on the RB drums, as it doesn't exist there. So GHIV wants me to buy a new drum set. To that I say "Frak You" and go back to jamming in Rock Band.

Shame really, as I would have gladly bought the game disc for GHIV if they hadn't pulled something like this.

Posted by teenspirit15 - Sunday, May 18, 2008 5:47 PM

this is way better than rockbands but im only getting it if its cheaper.

Posted by Snicker60515 - Monday, May 19, 2008 6:44 PM

I really hope they change their minds with this add-on because it will change the dynamic which made GH such a huge hit. But you don't HAVE to buy the drums now, of course they better make the game just as enjoyable for one or two players compared to the whole band like in Rock band. And to those who say GHIII is too hard, just practice more because it isn't supposed to be easy all the time because if it were, then you'd get bored after a while. Challenge is all part of the addiction.
