SNL Jokes On GTA, Fails

Posted May 12, 2008 - By Patrick Roche-Sowa

Saturday Night Live has had it's ups and downs over the decades, and we admit that sometimes it can be very difficult to maintain a level or respectable comedy. However, some mistakes cannot be excused, like this GTAIV skit from this past Saturday's Weekend Update.

First of all, what the f*%$ are they doing? The characters in GTA do not bobble around like spring-loaded action figures, so why are the comedians? Is that the international symbol for "I'm playing a video game character"? Also, I hate to put down Bill Hader (who's usually hilarious) but I'm pretty sure he hasn't played the game. His impression of Niko isn't in the ballpark of accurate, and that guy is the king of impressions. Lastly, where's the joke? Two people in costumes repeating "I beat you, I kill you" isn't funny. SNL writers, just like a TV show or movie, you have to know the source material before you try to write a joke about it. Go to your little brother's apartment and play GTA for a few hours and get back to me.
