'Wii Fit' Calls Kid Fat

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 10:51 AM

Maybe the real threat to kids isn't coming from Grand Theft Auto IV--could the friendly-seeming Nintendo Wii be the real culprit out to destroy our world's youth?

Anecdotal reports coming out of England point to new fitness "game" Wii Fit destroying kids' self-esteem by calling them fat. A poster on the DIS forums:

"My DSD came round this weekend and we let her play on our wii-fit. We have all laughed and joked about being told that we're fat and need to lose weight but I was gobsmacked when it told her that she is overweight. She is a healthy 10 year old girl with an active lifestyle, she swims and dances every week. She is 92lbs and 4ft9" tall and there is not an inch of fat on her. She is solidly built but not fat. She was devasted to be called fat and we had to work hard to convince her that she isn't. I know it is just a game but seriously we already have to worry about young girls starving themselves to look like the magazine models and now we have a game that tells them their fat. This to me is very worrying and I hope that is doesn't cause emotional problems for any youngsters out there"

The poster has written Nintendo an email, but hasn't heard back yet.

EDIT: Wii Fit makes it clear that their BMI calculations often don't apply to children, so we imagine this is what happened in this case.

whats wrong with calling a fatty a fatty.

Posted by kidinredhat - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 11:15 AM
rofl. you know what, if a kid is fat, they should be told they're fat. Don't lie. That'll just hurt them in the long run. I'm glad Wii Fit told her she was fat! She deserves it for eating all that McDonald's. I'm not saying people should be skinny. I'm saying that if you're fat, accept it as a fact and move on with your life. If you're fat and don't like it, call Jenny Craig or get liposuction. Don't complain about something that is totally under your control.

Oh dear god lol.

What is wrong with this person? "We call each other fat, even when there isn't an inch of fat on her." Um, it's pretty much moronic to be offended by a video game, but not a family member calling you fat.

If you take offense to a game calling you fat, you are fat. If you don't take offense to a game calling you fat, then you aren't fat. Pretty simple concept.

Better then saying "I'm not fat, i'm just big boned."

Maybe, like the BMI scale, it dosen't take muscle mass into account. Luckily, I have no muscle mass so, I wouldn't have to worry about this on the Wii Fit.

I think pleasantly plump would be nicer.. Buy most women dont think so lol..

Posted by little_eddy - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 11:25 AM
"pleasantly plump" that means fat.

Okay, I need some facts here. How much did the "game" (why is "game" in quotations here?) say she was over-weight? She could have been two pounds over-weight, which isn't much and shouldn't be by any means a blow to one's self-esteem. If it said she was fifty-two pounds over-weight, then the game glitched and nobody should be getting their feelings hurt over it. Or maybe they miscalculated her height when they entered it into the system. Also, I seriously doubt hat the game used the word "fat." Now, I don't know how the game works, but this article sounds a bit fishy. If it came out of England, why are the units of measurement feet and pounds? Think about that.

She's not fat, shes big boned.

"She's not fat, shes big boned." lol Have you ever seen a skeleton?

Posted by Slaytanic40oz - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 11:45 AM
92lbs @ 4'9" is actually pretty small.

@JDarkley: good catch on the non-metric units

Posted by TKEmysterio - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 11:54 AM
92 pounds at only 4'9" seems pretty "big" to me. I think they're just being nice to her.

If a kid can't take the humiliation from a video game what the heck will they do when their classmates are ripping on them??

@JDarkly...

The game doesn't measure "weight" it measured BMI (Body Mass Index). So it can be skewed. For instance if a 5'0" bodybuilder who weighs 180+ pounds would be considered "overweight" because he's not in, what BMI considers, an average perameter for healthy living.

I wonder how many people it will call fat in the US. Me thinks quite a few. You fat Yanks! LOL

The BMI is not a good scale to determine a healthy weight of a person. I'm surprized that Nintendo went with such a narrow minded scale instead of an adjusting scale based on body build type. It doesn't matter how well they cover their a$$es I'm sure there will be a lot more heat on this topic when it gets released.

good catch on the units jdarkly--I would've never caught that, I have a couple british friends and they never use the english system because it is essentially non-existant over there--it's harder to learn and more complex than the metric so most of them don't even know what it is or would much less be abel to actually measure anything with it

Posted by WhiteTrash - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 12:16 PM
Lol, nintendo PWNZ fat kids.

Posted by stormseye - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 12:26 PM
Wow we must have a lot of rediculously thin people posting. 92 lbs at 4'9" is fat? Really?
O yeah, it must be impossible that someone decided to translate the measurements from metric for the story to make sense here in the USA; it is impossible to to do that!

Posted by Bookshelf - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 12:36 PM
WHY WOULD THEY PUT BMI IN A GAME THATS FOR A KIDS CONSOLE! SERIOUSLY! WTF NINTENDO DEVs!?

Posted by anonomousperson - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 12:39 PM
Hahaha. Can we get a video of a fat kid getting this game from his parents, all happy and ready for fun, the game turns on and screams, "OK Fatty, lets work!" Then the kid starts crying.

Posted by KindredEX - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 12:47 PM
A lot of ignorant people posting on here....

Tell me why my friend can eat a whole pizza in one sitting, sit on his ass all day long playing Xbox 360 and weigh 135lbs but if I eat 2 slices I have to go and run on my treadmill for 2.25 miles so it doesn't take up residence in my mid section???

Plus BMI is a bogus measurement chart. How is it that someone on The Biggest Loser can weigh 275lbs and look fatter than the guy who is tipping the scales at 345lbs? There's way too much to take into account here.

Posted by SpekN9ne - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 12:48 PM
ok, so I'm a nutritionist at a childrens hospital and I can tell you that based soley on her height, weight and age, this kid would be considered above her ideal body weight (which in case you wanted to know is 78 lbs). But like some of you said, BMI is not a good indicator of overall health.

Posted by TKEmysterio - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 12:57 PM
@stormseye

After talking to several parents at the office here, everyone agreed that that IS pretty big for a girl her age at that height.

If you put it into perspective, there's 6ft models out there that weigh 100lbs, you take off an entire 1'3" all of a sudden 92 lbs seems like a lot. And keep in mind females weight different than guys.

A 5'8" man that weighs 170 looks healthy. A 5'8" woman that weighs 170 looks overweight. Just a fact of life.

If the kid does swim and dance everyweek like the poster claims it is very likely that her muscle mass is playing a part in the measurements. And for the record I have English friends too. And they from time to time use feet, pounds and even miles for measurement. Most of the time they do it while talking to me- I guess they do it as a courtesy- just like when I call them "mate". If you read the post, the poster is from Suffolk, England- so I'm sure she just was translating the measurements for her U.S. readers.

Posted by CrazGriffin - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 1:26 PM
JDarkly:
English people do use pounds and feet from time to time (especially when talking about people), and the use of miles is very common.

Mr Eko is right on.. Just because the poster on that forum used feet'n'inches doesn't discredit the claim at hand whatsoever. Nintendo shouldn't be judging someone's overall fitness by BMI as it seems to be, it should just tell you how much you weigh, that's it.. Set your own fitness goals, and use Wii Fit simply as a log.

Any amount of notion you'll give to anybody that they might be overweight causes a lot more distress than most users commenting on this page seem to understand. The mind is fragile, and while most of us on here may be a bit more secure and accepting in our, and others', appearance, we're far from being an example of the larger demographic of those who are already severely insecure. And they'll definitely take a video game's word on how 'fit' they really are. Don't look down on them because of that fact either, we all have our hang-ups.

Posted by Zero_Master_Beta - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 2:34 PM
Dang, dissed by the Wii though i guess it was kinda wrong i would of insulted the Wii and call it bad names maybe even take its treats away (I know that a Wii isnt a pet lol...) but yeah it would probably squeak at me, just insult it and it wont insult you back. Though i dont have Wii Fit as myself not wasting my money when i can just use my work bench.

Posted by SgtSmashBabies - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 4:29 PM
even if a kid doesnt play Wii Fit, he still knows he's fat. Unless he has never seen a reflection

Posted by dolphers - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 4:45 PM
Guys, guys... maybe the WiiFit meant "Phat". It was just commenting on her hip lifestyle!

:D

I'm literally big boned.
I can wrap my fingers all the way around the wrists of everyone I know and have my fingers overlap on the other side. On myself there is an inch gap between the same fingers. Same sort of thing goes for my ankles, and seems to apply to all my bones.
I'm living proof that big boned is an actual thing and not just an excuse for fat; tho in most cases it IS used as an excuse for fat.
*shrug*
Just food for thought I guess.

same problem happened with Wii Sports. It only said what your age for fitness was for 18 and older. If you were under their, like my little bro, then it was wrong. Same Happened here. Nothing to sue about.

Stop eating so much F'ing kidney pie you whore

Posted by capthavic - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 6:39 PM
It's not surprising that it was the calulation process was faulty. In middle school we did a similar test that said I was fat but that was because the test didn't take into account that I was tall for my age.

Posted by S14DGENER8 - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 7:17 PM
she's not fat just Really big and her parents are idiots because they made a very common grammatical error. Their------They're*

Posted by coolperson - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 8:14 PM
If someone's ten years old, is 4'9'', and weighs 92 pounds, they're probably fat, unless they have a heck of a lot of muscle and/or bone, which most 10 year old girls don't. I weighed 80 pounds when I was that age, and I know I was pretty chubby. I know height also plays a role in determining how overweight someone is, but I don't think I was much shorter than that girl.
Besides, if she's just big boned or has muscle or something, she shouldn't take her BMI seriously.

Now, for the question NOBODY has asked.
What the bloody hell is a DSD?

Posted by everlastinggaze - Wednesday, May 07, 2008 1:37 PM
Wow. I always knew nintendo sucked, but damn! Calling little girls fat? That's a new evil I didn't think even they would stoop to.
