Take-Two Offers 12-Step 'GTA IV' PS3 Fix

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, May 02, 2008 2:32 PM

Having trouble with GTA IV on the PS3? Take-Two has proposed a 12-step process to help you out. Here it is:

Please run through the following, go through in order.

1) Delete the game's install data. This is done via the PS3 options. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Game Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, from the menu select Delete. This will delete the game's install information.

2) Delete the game's save files. To delete any save files you will need to do the following. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Save Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, and from the context menu select Delete.

3) Disable your Internet connectivity for the PS3. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Settings' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Network Settings'. Now scroll down to the Internet connection option and press x, now select the disable option. Once this has been done unplug the ethernet cable if you are connecting to the Internet if using this.

4) Disable the console's information board. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Information Board', highlight this and press triangle. From the menu select 'Do not display' Press X to confirm this.

5) Disable Media Server functionality. Scroll to Settings, now scroll up / down to 'Network Settings' select Media Server connection. Once this has been done press triangle and change the option Disabled.

6) Delete all of the system's Internet cache. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Internet Browser', highlight this and press X. Once you browser opens press the triangle button once, from the new menu highlight the 'Tools' option and press X. Scroll down the menu until you reach 'Delete Cookies' and press X. Confirm the files deletion. Repeat this for 'Delete Cache'.

7 ) Turn off the PS3 screen saver. Use the cross media bar to scroll to 'Settings', select 'Display Settings'. Now highlight 'Screensaver' and set this to 'Do not use'.

8 ) Once this has been done, manually restart you PS3 by holding down the power button for 5 seconds it will beep once and then shut down. Release the power button and re-press it and hold for about 5 seconds. The system will then boot and reset all display settings. You will be prompted to reset your display settings to how you require them.

9) Once restarted please try the game again, you will be prompted to reinstall.

Once the game has started please turn off the following features:

Posted by ichaboddanger - Friday, May 02, 2008 2:56 PM
seriously? glad i bought a 360 instead of a PC. oh wait this is for PS3? lol can't tell.

Posted by dougdangger - Friday, May 02, 2008 2:57 PM
Easiest fix:

Throw PS3 out the window and
buy a 360.

Posted by hetman - Friday, May 02, 2008 2:57 PM
I have a 3 part fix that is way easier and quiker than that.
1)Sell ps3 on ebay, or pawn shop
2)buy a 360 and GTAIV
3) Play GTAIV

Posted by bleahy - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:01 PM
@gahaz,

I'm posting an official statement from Take-Two on the matter.

It is a neutral article and doesn't bad mouth the PS3 at all.

Grow up.

Posted by gahaz - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:02 PM
Perhaps instead of ragging on the PS3 you could rag on R* for releasing a game bugged. You didn't see Wii people bashing 360 people when they got the copy of Bully that worked better than the 360 version? Perhaps we should be up in arms against a publisher that has now put out 2 games bugged right outta the box.

I could be wrong, but I can't get too wrapped up, lovin GTA on my PS3, just unlocked the 3rd island. So great.

Posted by gahaz - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:05 PM
@Bleahy,
Aye, that you are, but you have drawn the line in the sand, as it were. If you ucan come on a website and bash something openly, then be prepared to have it handed back. How would it look if Kotaku came out and trashed one system over the other? They would get burnt. Just tossin a little bit back to you.

Whats the matter, is a no face on the internet bothering you?

Well Said Bleahy. Well Said.

Posted by xjohn - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:09 PM
I buy all game for my xbox 360 anyway. My ps3 dont get much use.

Posted by Redd75 - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:11 PM
@gahaz
You do know that Leahy owns a ps3 right? He was just expressing his feelings toward it's slow start, methinks. Chill out.

My copy of GTA froze on me Tue. night, and I haven't had a problem since. I don't know about this whole multi-step process thing...

Posted by gahaz - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:13 PM
I know, but he went out of his way to stir up shiz, and so I'll help him feel it. When we get a "sorry man, I went out of line for no reason" I'll give it up.

Posted by bleahy - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:36 PM
It was a joke in our Epic Fail feature.
Those joke features are the only time that I express any fanboyism because they are a joke.

Posted by gahaz - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:39 PM
All right all right. I'll see it. But you have to admit, everyone else that answered the epic fail feature went for an actual crappy movie, and you flayed the fanboy corpse.

All right. Ill take it and go, please disregard my other posts, delete them if you can. Just tell me one thing and things can be forgiven.

San Andreas or GTA4, which is the better game?
(I was at the bar last night arguing this question with my friends.)

What a hassle, why not just patch it?

Posted by Letters2Kay - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:42 PM
It was not funny. "Grow up." Your quote.

Posted by santjnthn - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:43 PM
12 steps... too funny.. Here are my 12 steps...

1. Take the PS3
2. Clear an area in the middle of your living room or where ever you can find to clear up..
3. take a hammer.
4. and hit it.
5. again
6. again
7. again
8. again
9. again
10. again
11. again
12. Then throw that damn system away and buy your self a 360, stop the madness and get your self a real gaming system. Stop trying to ticker around with your bluray player that just happens to play game.

Posted by jnights - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:46 PM
How did he "stir up shiz"? I dont see it.

Posted by random_luigi07 - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:48 PM
hey bleahy is that cartoon show in GTA4 a HALO parody...The Republican Space Rangers...lmao theres some pretty funny stuff on TV.

Posted by Letters2Kay - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:50 PM
RE: The "fix"

Sounds like they can't figure out the problem so they're just telling you to do everything that could possibly make a difference. Try this before you delete all your data:

#4 Disable Info Board (who uses this regularly?)
#5 Disable Media Servers
#6 Delete Internet Cahce (why not? couldn't hurt)
#7 Turn off the Screen Saver

I've had no problems with the game whatsoever on my 60 gig and these are things I'd already done with my console before playing GTA4 on it. Hope that helps someone.

Posted by gahaz - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:50 PM
santjnthn,

But what the 360 I already own and had to send back 4 times and now am frightened to even power it on and is sitting unused till GoW2 comes out?

Real gaming system? What makes it a real gaming system? The fact that it has a failure rate that is ridiculous? Perhaps is the fact that its kinda like a PC because they come out with a new one every 7 months that you need for the "ultimate" experience? Perhaps its for Halo? Oh wait, people are already rather done with it and more people play CoD4, a multiplatform game, on Live?

Posted by Redd75 - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:52 PM
Not sure why there's any 360 owners in this thread...wait, yeah I do, but I'll be nice.
Didn't G4 report that GTA was freezing some 360's as well?

Posted by daxterdanny123 - Friday, May 02, 2008 3:58 PM
its not the ps3 its the game they didnt edited the game good on the ps3 but mine works so good..

Posted by the_sparrow666 - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:10 PM
1.stand on left foot
2. take off underwear and place on outside of pants
3. take right hand and punch self in the face

Posted by santjnthn - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:14 PM
@ gahaz

The new 360's that are out on the market does not suffer from the RRoD.. The new systems all have the HDMI. You will be fine if you can get your hands on the 360 with the cooler running board. Here is a step for all you fools who own a 360. Stop cramping your system with other equipment the puts out heat... That goes for any system, PC's too. If your system and other equipment makes the temperature of your home go up, then that means you need better ventilation. BTW... 360 RuleZ... GTA4 RuleZ

Posted by bleahy - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:14 PM
GTA 4 is better than San Andreas.

Republican Space Rangers is a joke about Halo.

Do you guys want me to make fun of the 360? I will if you really really want me to.

Posted by gahaz - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:20 PM
So Santjnthn, I am supposed to buy a new 360 for HDMI and not to have to worry about RRoD?

And bleahy, all will be forgiven, hugs all around, if you make fun of the intellivision.

Posted by santjnthn - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:26 PM
@ Redd75

Let me answer your question... NO... G4 did not report any freezing problems with the Xbox 360 version of GTA4. Here is why. PS3 has to load some of the game on the Hard drive to reduce the loading time because the bluray player only runs at 2x's. The Xbox 360 version can play right off the disc and does not need to load anything onto the hard drive to reduce loading time, only the file needed to save the game or to let you play online.

Posted by gahaz - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:27 PM
Santjnthn,

There are 360 versions freezing in the exact same spot. Thanks for your rampant misinformation.

Posted by mercisan - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:30 PM
@bleahy
No. Don't do it man. I beg you. Resist the temptation. Sony fanboys are trying to puppet with you.

Posted by santjnthn - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:35 PM
@ gahaz

Dude, the problem with PS3 in my opinion is that it focused on Bluray first. Not the gaming and so far even with the 360 problems, Xbox still leads and Sony still follows behind. The next big problem is development. Been said many, many times, yet all fanboys can say is that developers are being lazy, no it’s not about being lazy, it’s about the problems trying to developed for the PS3 and the cell to work perfectly for games. There have been instances where games would glitch out. Big games like Lair, Assassins Creed and so on. I like the PS3, but Sony did not focus on games the first time around. It was all about the bluray player and then all sorts of hype. Even Drakes Uncharted was nothing to write home about. So yea, Microsoft is about gaming. 360 is a gaming system. It’s all about the games and only games. The movie parts are just the extras.

Posted by Needles_kane - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:38 PM
dude why's everyone gettin so worked up over this BS. it's a friggin game grow up! I love my ps3, haven't had one bloody problem with it and I got it right after Christmas. so everyone who's sayin "oh sony sux and their system locks up and has no good games" needs to pull their head outta Microsux ass and see the light

Posted by mercisan - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:45 PM
Man. That's a lot of work to reinstall a single game. It sounds as bad as removing a virus from a computer. And you loose all your progress. That sucks.

Posted by cryfordawn - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:48 PM
HAHAHHAAH you mean people bought this for PS3? Funny how 360 sold double the amount of doesnt have this issue.. LOL

Stop 13. Drop kick your POS PS3 and buy a real system like the 360

Posted by sinister6972 - Friday, May 02, 2008 4:53 PM
So, wait a minute. The PS3 one doesn't work??? Well, mines works pretty good and as a matter of fact, I got both of them in the 360 and PS3! LOL!!! By the way, is that a waste of money???? Well, in the words of "Mr. Dakota" in CodeMonkeys, this is what I'll say.....

"This ain't a vote of confidence, this is my money!!!" LOL!!!

Posted by demby123 - Friday, May 02, 2008 5:04 PM
lets make a deal with bleahy...
if he can make an entire article flaming the 360,
sony fanboys here MUST forgive EVERY anti-sony article or comment for the month of may

Posted by jahlov420 - Friday, May 02, 2008 5:05 PM
really retarted...i'm glad my 60gb ps3 only froze once for the 20+ hours i've played gta4

Posted by santjnthn - Friday, May 02, 2008 5:06 PM
Funny how PS3 fans get so sensitive when it’s all about the PS3 messing up, yet they have no problem saying...OOOOO RRoD... OOOOOO Halo sux.. OOOOO you have to pay for your online gaming. Those are the people who have no idea how much fun, no matter the problems. How much fun the Xbox 360 experience is, Even the online game play, the achievement, the gamer score, the DLC since the beginning, The library of games. Once you get passed the entire BS and realize that the Xbox 360 is more than just a gaming system, it a community, it’s a connection with friends. It's the system with the highest number of #1 games in history the year of 2007. The Xbox 360 is the better system and it can only get better and better. 2008 is looking bright.

Posted by mrgrim357 - Friday, May 02, 2008 5:24 PM
its a problem on both systems rockstar even said
it so stop the flaming
