Obama on 'GTA IV'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, May 01, 2008 7:40 AM

Even presidential candidate Barack Obama has taken notice of the Grand Theft Auto IV mania that is sweeping the nation. At a recent campaign stop in Indiana, Obama said:

I was just catching the news this morning about Grand Theft Auto, this video game, which is gonna break all records and make goo-gobs of money for whoever designed it. Now, this isn’t intended for kids, although I promise you there are kids who are playing it, but these video games are raising our kids…

Across the board, middle-class, upper-class, working-class kids, they’re spending a huge amount of their time not on their studies, but on entertainment.

And so part of our job is going to have to be to inspire the entire country to say, ‘How are we giving our kids a thirst for knowledge?’ And turning off the TV set, and getting them to be engaged and interested, like their future really does matter on how well they do in school.”

We're not sure what goo-gobs are, but we're happy that Obama is continuing his sensible tact on videogames--note there's no condemnation of the game or games in general. Obama is right: GTA IV is for adults, although we don't feel gaming and a "thirst for knowledge" are mutually exclusive.

Obama is a long-legged mac daddy!

Posted by tedcwilliams - Thursday, May 01, 2008 7:53 AM
I wonder if he knows Rev. Wright is an unlockable character...

Posted by slimmer - Thursday, May 01, 2008 7:59 AM
Theres a time for both and a kid who played video games a lot and became or becomes a designer who makes a good paycheck is ok because money is king.
Obama should stop talking to stupid people because I'm the one raising my kid and yes I let him play video games.

you guys are so far up obamas' anus, it's not even funny. Then, when he loses, your gonnna say you were a republican the whole time. You guys are hypocrites about everything etc. promoting a whole week to snakes on a plane, second life, uwe boll. Pick a side and stick with it

Posted by slimmer - Thursday, May 01, 2008 8:06 AM
Politicians should stop wasting tax payers money and time, Obama should stick to the Economy,Iraq and other actual subjects.
Stupid people will raise their kids however they want its the American way and Govt should stay out of peoples personal business.

I don't think Obama is saying or even implying that gaming and having a "thirst for knowledge" are mutually exclusive as you say. What I get from that is he is trying to make the point that gaming is becoming a more prevalent fixture in kids lives and its pushing things like education off to the side. What I get when I read Obama's statement is that he is saying that educators increasingly have to compete with other media for kid’s attention and they need to make sure they don't fall behind.

Imagine that. A politician focuses on a topic like education and people attack him because they think he's criticizing them, typical public garbage

@ TEDCWILLIAMS That is one of the funniest things I have ever read...Thank you

cont'd.

I'm a gamer but I'm also an academic. One does not prevent me from doing the other. But gaming is just like any other distraction, its easy to get sucked in especially as games get more engrossing. I don't fault the man for saying kids need to make sure these kids strike a balance between gaming and learning.

/rant off. Keep up the good work G4.

they can do whatever they think is right...as long as they dont ban games and violent games, just better parenting, check id for adult games

Agree with TheSolMan on tedcwilliams's comment...

Hilarious!!!

Posted by hetman - Thursday, May 01, 2008 8:50 AM
Blames parents. All my friends that played games growing up are college graduates. "besides one who is in construction." with good jobs. And technically the guy in construction probably makes more money than most of the college graduates. Either way it is all about parenting not games. And Obama Sucks he is just one of the three cookie cutter presidence that the media is offering you. If you want change write in your vote for Ron Paul.

obama can't take the approach of "video games are bad" because sooo much of his support comes from young people.

I bet if he had taken a stance from the beginning that he was against video games, the college crowd would not be for him as much.

Video Games are the only education we got!!!

Posted by slimmer - Thursday, May 01, 2008 9:13 AM
"A politician focuses on a topic like education"
Via video games.

GooGobs, huh?

Sounds like a unit of measurement for porno movies.

Posted by abcfool1987 - Thursday, May 01, 2008 9:15 AM
@panzerfist

Ya right, I bet you if Mccain said this G4 and you wouldn't be protecting him and you would attack him.

Posted by TKEmysterio - Thursday, May 01, 2008 9:26 AM
He's acting like this is some sort of new revelation that kids play to many video games.

Back in the golden age of the NES I once had it taken away by my parents for 6 friggin months because my grades slipped. I can tell you one thing... my grdes never dipped below a B average again!!

My point is that parents need to get off their arses and act like they care about their kids future. There are way to many lazy parents out there.

The term 'fool' doesn't lie.

Why did Obama even talk about GTA IV? What's the point?

Posted by JDarkley - Thursday, May 01, 2008 9:31 AM
Hooray! A politician who not only believes in parental responsibility, but who isn't blaming GTA for real-world violence that hasn't, and probably won't, happen!

Posted by reformedcalvinist - Thursday, May 01, 2008 9:39 AM
Gosh! any time any republican says anything that even resembles dissing video games, you G4 guys are all over them... but not when it's your darling Obama :)

Posted by abcfool1987 - Thursday, May 01, 2008 9:41 AM
@gravy666
the Term "fool" is for people like you...

I wasn't attacking Obama, I merely pointed out that it doesn't matter what ever your candidate says, people are going to agree with whatever they say and there are always going to be people who attack him no matter what.

If you switch Mccain with Obama's name, you would have people who love video games and still attack him. that's American Politics and thats what I majoring in, Political Science...

I did some resaerch, Mccain has never(or yet idk) to attack games, but one of his supportors (Lieberman) is agasint Games but does not support Mccain for this.

Oh its usually Far left(I mean Far Far Left) and the fantical Christian Fundamentals who are agasint Video games...
And they all hate Mccain.

Posted by learnedfist - Thursday, May 01, 2008 9:46 AM
Obama knows that things other than video games cause violence. He is buddies with William Ayers, a guy who bombed public buildings in real life, long before the media and politicians had video games to blame for all life's ills.

Obama Sux.. All Politicians are all the same..

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, May 01, 2008 9:53 AM
i bet obama is playing this lol.

when i was at gamespot in line waiting for my name to be called, i noticed a cop in the back of the store. I figured he was here to make sure no one broke out in a fight or something, but then a name is called and he walks up the counter, takes his copy of gta4 and walks off with a big smile on his face. and im like are you serious?! haha!!

I think Obama is right, kids do spend more time playing Video games then doing their studies. Their are underage kids playing GTA. But what Obama doesnt realize is that kids CAN also learn from video games. I'm an idiot i admit that, and i didnt learn SQUAT in school (maybe cause i was playing video games) But i did learn a few things from Playing video games. ShellShock Nam'67 i learned about Vietnam, I learned a hell of a lot from playing Metal Gear Solid 3 and the Cold War and all the amazing things that were happening in the 1960's. And i learned that Hot Coffee was also a pun for having sex. Thanks GTA! Now if only their was a video game that worked on Nouns, ProNouns, Verbs, and Adjectives. And i can't wait to play MGS4 to learn what the future has instore for digital controlled WAR and walking tanks!

Typical politician speak.

@tedcwilliams- probably one of the funniest thigns I have heard lately

Posted by staychisel - Thursday, May 01, 2008 12:36 PM
@Bookshelf, and then he arrested you for trying to steal a copy and the video appeared on youtube. yeah i figured as much.

Posted by crazykila93 - Thursday, May 01, 2008 1:49 PM
I actually like the way he addresed the game he did it in well fashioned manner.

Posted by Whatsa - Thursday, May 01, 2008 4:55 PM
Uhh.. it's the parents that should be controlling the kid's gaming and whatnot.. it's the parents!

thecoo1est wrote "Yeah well Obama needs to keep GTA4 out of his mouth, f-ing racist piece of chit"

explain yourself, what makes Obama a racist? sounds to me like you are the racist piece of chit. Speaking as a white southern male, I think I know racism when I see, hear, or read it. You are the one with the problem, not Obama.

I give Obama credit. His concern is a legitimate one, and he's not coming down of the game as the bane of humanity. Yet another reason why I'm hoping that he can get the nomination.

Posted by F3ARC3 - Thursday, May 08, 2008 6:56 AM
Im a Hardcore gamer and instead of Obama bin ladin up there talkin about how video games are wrong just like a hundred million Soccer moms maby he should worry about something elese like I don't know maby that whole"WAR" thing going on. He should stick to real problems.
