Netflix To Raise Blu-Ray Rental Prices

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, April 22, 2008 10:21 AM

The downside to the end of a format war is that prices go up. Netflix will begin charges subscribers a little extra for the ability to rent Blu-Ray discs.

Netflix doesn't expect the surcharge to be huge, but placed blame on the higher cost of Blu-Ray's over DVDs.

They also don't believe that Blu-Ray renting customers would rise over 9% of their total subscriber base this year.

Well, if Blockbuster is smart, here is the crack they can exploit.

I enjoy getting movies on Blu when available, but I'm not paying more for 'em.

you paid more to rent DVD's when they came out... but you know we want new tech, but we want to pay old tech prices.... just think you were lucky to get BD for the same price as DVD for as long as you did....

..or you could pay the price for DVDs and just rent those.

Blue-ray is the way to go.

I rent Blu-ray on Netflix all the time, but if they increase the price (we'll see how much. I'm not gonna get hurt of a dollar or so increase) because of something that was on their service for a while now at no additional cost, I may look into Blockbuster's services.

Then again, from what I hear, Blockbuster online is horrible.

dolphers,

From whom have you heard that Blockbuster Online is horrible?

Just by comparing their website designs Blockbuster comes out on top. Not to mention they have brick-and-mortar locations that you can utilize with 'Total Access'. (They also chose Blu-ray, the winning format, as their select HD media while Netflix was still in the middle.) So what if Netflix has a few movies for download? How many people want to and/or are able to connect their computer to their TV (or sit in an uncomfortable computer room for a full length movie) anyway?
