Nintendo Dominates Hardware and Software Sales in the U.S.

Posted by Ty Colfax - Friday, April 18, 2008 2:22 PM

It appears as though this whole shortage issue is gone for Nintendo. They posted very impressive sales numbers for their hardware and software in March and trounced both Sony and Microsoft in these areas. Let's just put it this way, Nintendo sold 58% of all hardware sales in the US between their DS, Gameboy, and Wii systems.

Not only that, but the sales numbers overall indicate that the supposed recession that the news wants you to be so interested in is not effecting gaming. Growth is good and people are buying and making more games than ever. waht waht?

Pop the break for fancy charts and bad news for M$ fanboys and girls.

TALE OF THE TAPE

chart borrowed from arstechnica

Consoles Sold in the US in March
Wii - 721,000
DS - 698,000
PSP - 297,000
360 - 262,000
PS3 - 257,000

Software Top Four
1. Super Smash Bros.: Brawl - 2,700,000
2. Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 - 752,300
3. Army of Two (for the 360) - 606,100
4. Wii Play - 409,800

For some perspective, consider that Nintendo sold a copy of Super Smash Bros. to 31% of its US installed base in one month. That's incredible.

It was not a strong month for Sony as far as software sales but their response to the numbers is that a "waterfall of blockbusters" coming up should reverse that trend. Among them are Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, and SOCOM:Confrontation, and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. We're also assuming a nice boost from GTA IV.

While it was a bad month for Sony, Microsoft seems to be worse off without any huge exclusives coming up. Additionally, their hardware numbers are handicapped by the fact that they have no handhelds to sell, while Sony and Nintendo obviously do. Unleash the fanboys!

Sony is making some bank, but wii is dominating.

Posted by paranoic - Friday, April 18, 2008 2:30 PM
btw why does the ps3 in the picture look so faded. I doesn't have a shiny appearance. It actually looks pretty nice.

Posted by enzospartan - Friday, April 18, 2008 2:33 PM
it looks that way because that was the 20gig launch model. it didn't have a chrome outline. it was discontinued a long time ago.

Posted by ShinGino - Friday, April 18, 2008 2:35 PM
Why is Xbox 360 falling behind in 3rd!?
Even the PSP and PS2 are higher!

@ paranoic
It's the old 20Gig PS3 with no chrome.

b/c xbox sucks....

I expect somewhat similar results when Mario Kart comes out.

Posted by GravityHammer - Friday, April 18, 2008 2:54 PM
that xbox, yeah...
just because halo 3 sold more copies of itself than the PS3 hardware at the time... and now...
this means the PS3 is l33t and t3h 360 got pwnd.
Uhh... fanbois...

Posted by LoCuSt - Friday, April 18, 2008 3:11 PM
And I'm sure Metal Gear Solid will sell more of itself than xbox does in July. Wasn't this whole post about wii?

Posted by NinjaVanish - Friday, April 18, 2008 3:36 PM

Sony is making some bank. That's why people like Phil Harrison couldn't jump off that sinking ship fast enough.

Man, You nine year olds know it all.

Posted by Frankotaco - Friday, April 18, 2008 4:03 PM
i concur with Anorexic_Panda, if those sleek Black Wii's where in America i would be more opted to go out and buy one. its amazing wii games sales are up. i though the wii would be a fad and eventually just die out once the thrill of the motion controller wore off. seem since there is an influx of good first party games its doing good for the time being. good for Nintendo. and Sony is doing good with the PSP and PS3, and the good old PS2, i think the PS2 will be the next Super. people will play it continuously there whole lives. and even Microsoft is doing good considering they have only one piece of hardware. compared to there competitors each having two or three.

Black wii in picture...
Now that I think of it, where are the other colors for wiis

Posted by paranoic - Friday, April 18, 2008 4:34 PM
ooo i c, thank you for responses. It looks a little bit better than my 80 gig.

I think the only thing that can keep MS in this race this summer is a price drop. Please Microsoft!

Posted by mercisan - Friday, April 18, 2008 4:49 PM
@demby123

If the Wii is not a console in your silly opinion, would you mind telling me WTF it is?

Every time something like this gets posted I LMAO. It's always xbox fanboys vs. ps3 fanboys fighting for the scraps of glory that wii fanboys throw at them. LMAO.

Posted by LoCuSt - Friday, April 18, 2008 4:52 PM
The XBox 360 is well overdue for a price drop. It's necessary. That and them solving the whole red rings of death problem.

Posted by mercisan - Friday, April 18, 2008 5:07 PM
@LoCuSt

Didn't you hear? RROD is dead. At least in the ones recently made.

MS is making bank I guess thats why Peter Moore jumped ship, you see we can do that too...

Posted by icedbirdman - Friday, April 18, 2008 5:48 PM
I just dont understand what is making the wii sell so well? It has no real compeling games horrible online and no big tech, and last gen graphics but it continues to kick ass.

Posted by Tai - Friday, April 18, 2008 6:51 PM
I bought a Wii on launch date. I am now selling it. There have been as many good games as I can count on my own two hands.

I am sad to say it was not fully worth it.

I am now glad to have a 360.

THE WII IS RUINING GAMEING whats gonna happen is game develepors are gonna stop developing good games and just make quick games on the wii which use its gimik wii mote system wii only sells goob because a bunch of parents are like oh my lil timmy needs a easy and cheap consol to play thats half of the wii sales right there but by what people are saying that gta4 is going to sell better then halo 3 which is on the 360 so that should help the 360 out and the 360 just had a price drop of 50 dollars any more microsoft would just lose money

....

...also the ps3 and 360.

is everyone happy?

I own a Wii and 360. I have more games for the 360, and the ones for the Wii are far and few between. My friend has a ps3 but I don't think it even compares to the 360. I tried resistance and warhawk,and can't say I liked them as much as Halo or Gears. PS3 itself is better than the 360, but the 360 dominates it in online (including marketplace), and games (including exclusive content for games- what game comes out April 29th with x box exclusive content?). Metal Gear looks ok but even my friend isn't going to get it because he can never follow the story. Whoever said Microsoft doesn't have any exclusive content coming out hasn't been keeping up to date checkin out the marketplace.

Posted by OuterHeavenPretender - Friday, April 18, 2008 8:37 PM
I was shocked to see the PS2 is out selling the 360. Are their really any MUST HAVE PS2 games coming out, granted most who are buying PS2 are buying the games that have been out. PS3 i think should topple the Wii when METAL GEAR SOLID 4 is released. And i'm curious to see if the 360 can get back in the game(no pun intended) Gears sequel and Mass Effect sequel should spark 360 interest.

The great thing is, no matter what consoles you have their are GREAT GAMES to play that are OUT NOW, and are COMING OUT.

"For some perspective, consider that Nintendo sold a copy of Super Smash Bros. to 31% of its US installed base in one month. That's incredible."

Microsoft did the same thing with Halo 3. What's the big deal?

Also, Microsoft should make a handheld.

you and your friend are idots...

I'm sorry I mean idiots.. (sorry about the i)

Posted by dbzwiifan18 - Friday, April 18, 2008 9:07 PM
@icebirdman
not every one is in to online play.Better tech does not equel better games.Good graphics do not make a game good.Frosted crap is still crap.Aside from the obvious good Wii games (Zelda,Mario,Smash,Metroid and a few others) you forget about Gamecube games and the virtual console.Nostalgia is a powerful thing.Some people want to play and finish older again.Consider this and maybe it will make sense as to why they sell.

Posted by dbzwiifan18 - Friday, April 18, 2008 9:21 PM
@partyboy
the Wii is not ruining gaming .You are. Consider this, no one forces you to buy any game or system.Just because they put something in a store doesn't mean you have to buy it.A lot of crap games on the Wii?Thats true but there are just as many on the ps2(still a viable system) and no one complains they just ignore the and move on to God of war and other games of that calibur.Developers will stop making good games because they can make a quick buckn on Wii? The only developers that will do that are the ones that don't already make good games.EA will still make Madden and Square enix will still make Final Fantasy and the like. More coming...

Posted by dbzwiifan18 - Friday, April 18, 2008 9:40 PM
On the 0ther systems i dont see tripleA masterpieces coming out every week.Even if they did there would no way for you do buy ($60 x say 5 a week=$300 hard in todays economy) much less play them all the way they're meant to be played (it's like watching ten minutes of a movie and saying you saw it).As the cycle goes you will overlook a few good games which will cause studios to lose $$ and invest less in sequels or go out of business like Clover studio With Okami (still sad that ultimately games are judged by profits instead of creativity). This leading to developers flooding the market with subpar "hardcore"games and killing the industry.Never complain that there are not enough good games coming all at once on any system. Just make sure you buy the good games when they come and everything will be fine.

@abcfool1987
WTF is an idot?

@Dennio

You are no idiot sir. You know how to recognize good games. I am on the same page with your friends about MGS4. I have more games for my 360 than my wii also. But I love my Wii and play as much as my 360. I don't have a single ps3 game, it's my dedicated movie player. I have plenty of ps3 games available to play if I want to, though. I just have to borrow them from my nephew in the next room. But I have no interest in them.

Posted by icedbirdman - Friday, April 18, 2008 10:22 PM
for all you people always bashing the PS3 on the game selection again to each his own. I like a multitude of games (I own 15 games) not just shooters, I own a PS3. Xbox 360 owners again you had a year headstart you should have more games than the Wii or the PS3, which both have plenty of games out now and coming.

As far as MGS4 is concerned, its gonna be awesome and the story is not that hard at all, but if you dont play them, then you cant get hype about it can you. IE Halo never caught my attention and the story to me is lack luster, the only reason buy it is for multiplayer, while people buy MGS for story and single player. it all comes down to what you like so quit downing the PS3 or vice versa.
