The MMO Report: 4th Edition D&D Special

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, April 18, 2008 11:12 AM

This week, we have a very special treat for you, our dedicated fans. Casey is something of a Dungeons and Dragons enthusiast, as you may have seen in his review of the 4th Edition ruleset he got to play a while back. Well this week we take you even deeper into the dark, lightless cave for an in-depth look at the 4th Edition, as well as the new online component, D&D Insider.

Why is this such a big deal? Well first of all, if you play MMOs then you must have history, if not at least appreciation for Dungeons and Dragons. None of the games we play today would exist without the meager beginings of pencil and paper and 20 sided die. Second, we got some exclusives in this interview. Not only are we the first media outlet to get confirmation of the first 8 classes in the new 4th Edition, but we also squeezed out a few classes that will be in the Second Player's Handbook that's releasing next year. Oh yeah, we're just that good. You won't find this in-depth coverage anywhere else.

But don't worry, we still got you covered on MMO news. Check out the stories we would have talked about this week right here.

So clear off the kitchen table, pull your chainmail out of the closet, and unsheath your +20 broadsword. This is...

a very special MMO Report.

WOOT!
Man I'm looking forward to this!
Thanks for telling me they're all getting released simultaneously now, last I checked they were spread over 3 months for whatever reason.

I want to start a petition. The soul purpose of this petition is to try and ban Mr. Schreiner from ever uttering the words "unicorn rape" ever again.

Please, sign if you agree.

lets say ... 50 signatures?

It's worth a shot :-)

Will the digital goods be Mac compatible? No biggie with Boot Camp of course, but I've always been a fan of running stuff native (and keeping that heaping steam of Vista off my machine).

This is pretty cool, but today's gamers aren't patient enough for the story telling I don't think. Bring on the Mountain Dew and Doritos!

Alright, answered my own stupid question:

The D&D Insider applications have been developed for the PC platform. Two of the applications (the D&D Game Table and the Character Creator) use a 3D engine based on DirectX. Our recommended specs include Windows XP SP2, 512MB RAM, AMD XP 2400 + or Intel P4 2.6Ghz, and a graphics card with 128 MB RAM and support of Shader 2.0. These recommended specs allow you to experience the full range of lighting and shade effects our 3D engine offers.

Ugh... and then D&D died forever... This just looks so bad...

Well, I'm not sure if a podcast counts as a "media outlet" but I had the 8 core classes confirmed on my show nearly a month ago. :-)

Basically, this is D&D going "Hey, we invented this stuff (actualy, they just own the rights to the game that invented it, but) we want our cut of that MMO money!!!"

Either way, I'll prolly get the 3 book set (there is a 3 book boxed set).
