Music Biz Trying To Screw You?

Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, April 16, 2008 12:02 PM

Guess what!?!?!

The music industry is trying to try to squeeze more money out of you, the American public, by telling the government that because they are now willing to let people transfer the music they legally purchased between their various music-listening devices, they deserve extra money!

…or so says music conspiracy theorist William Patry of Techdirt.com.

Patry says that there's obvious value in being able to transfer music around, otherwise why would people want that ability.
It all goes back to the psychological explanation for why the music biz keeps getting into trouble: “They assume that all of the value needs to be captured by them, and not anyone else. In economics, this is effectively an industry telling the government that it needs to be compensated for all of the positive externalities it created -- even if it's better off at an absolute level.

“Basically, the industry is so overvaluing its own content, that it assumes that any additional value that people get out of music, even if it's through no effort of the recording industry itself, should be entirely converted to more revenue for the industry.

“As an analogy, it's like your automobile maker demanding an ongoing cut of your salary, since without the automobile, you wouldn't be able to drive to work.

“Unfortunately, though, unless you're a copyright wonk, you might not even notice that the recording industry is trying to do this. Instead, it presents its case in a logical fashion, focusing on how much ‘value’ it's suddenly creating by ‘allowing’ people to transfer the music they already legally purchased to the device of their choosing.”
Hmmmmm…the man does have a point.

The record industry should probably sue and crush him, huh?

Music? What music? It’s all a bunch of wimpy retards with toy store Casio keyboards, or a guitar with one string and a microphone. Puffy ruined rap, Madonna in the Rock Hall ruined rock.
Music is dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing going today in music is Guitar Hero & Rock Band. And 90% of that music is from the 90s & back.

this guy has it dead on. and even though most people here are right, this article is more about the industry then the content of the industry, but i totally agree with all of you. anywho. the industry does do this. they feel they leas the music to you, not that you buy it. and that anything you do with it rather then play it in the intended player, such as converting a CD to mp3 or vice versa. they fell they deserve a cut of money due to giving you the "privilege" of doing these things with the music you bought. I feel the music label will become obsolete and die with internet availability to have customers find you on the net rather then needing a studio to broadcast you to customers. and i hope it does, cus music labels are d-bags who deserve to burn in hell. and record labels know this...and are trying to perpetuate it.

What's it matter? Even if the industry gets its wish, idiotic sheople will continue to buy it.

How do I know this? Because idiotic sheople continue to pay $0.99 per song, which is theft in itself.

Oh, notice how many songs are now jumping to $1.49?

And the industry wants to know why P2P software is the way many sheople get its music.

Thanks for the article and for mentioning me. It may be churlish to point out, though, that I have nothing to do with Techdirt and none of the quotes in your story are actually by me: they are from the Techdirt story about a different blog post I did on my blog, the URL to which is here:
