3-D 'Ghost In The Shell' Film?

Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, April 16, 2008 11:53 AM

DreamWorks has acquired rights to the Japanese manga Ghost in the Shell and are planning on making it a 3-D live-action feature (‘cause we all know how well those do!).

"Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite stories," DreamWorks head honcho Steven Spielberg said. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."

They story centers around the adventures of a Japanese covert ops unit that specializes in fighting technology-related crime. Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment (X-Men and Fantastic Four flicks) will produce, while Jamie Moss (Street Kings) will pen the adaptation.

"Ghost in the Shell is a property that epitomizes 3-D live-action motion picture possibilities," DreamWorks production head Adam Goodman added.

Created by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three videogames. The second film, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.

sweet deal, but first, lets get a proper DVD version of Ghost in the Shell 2 that has both an english dub and japanese audio options. The dvd out now is subpar compared to the first film.
Wasn't there going to be an Evangelion live action movie too?

No its Motoko Kusanagi.

Will they stay faithful to the original manga or the movie adaption?

Yes there is an Eva live action planned. Right now its in development hell.

As much as I love Eva, the movie will most likely suck. Theyd probably dumb it down considerably, remove most of the religious allusions, and tone it down to a PG13 rating.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please god don't dub the damn thing!

Posted by slippy_ick - Wednesday, April 16, 2008 1:33 PM

if they do make it, it better not be pg-13...it would be a turd!

OH NOOOOO!!! They found something else that I like and they are going to mess it the eff up. You can't keep anything away from these people. It's like someone going into your treasure chest and taking it out and completely destroying it. You know what, I think someone from Japan should make a remake of ET or Indiana Jones.

GiTS and Eva live action are signs of the apocolypse

Posted by Tmidiman - Wednesday, April 16, 2008 2:31 PM

Yes they would suck, but there is always that piece of me that would like to see it. I did see some photos of the live Eva and I must say it looked pretty cool.

all i can say is it prolly will suck but it better be in english this time dreamworks! sorry if i wanted to read i'd buy a book. i look at the drawing and listen to the story not try to read fast text talking about deep subject matter.

if not then i'll hope for another regeion 2 eng. dub.

@theone06

This is partially true but really they are just symptoms of an unimaginative population/industry (wasn't DreamWorks supposed to foster imagination). This is less an Apocalypse than another very bad idea al la Bill & Ted remake or the ghastly live action Fist of the NorthStar or even more so the confounding horror of the Final Fantasy 3D Action spectacular FAIL.

I hope this film ends up like Final Fantasy Advent children...

I dont care what any one else had to say. dchave04 I hope to god the same thing. I really hope japan gets the rights to a major speilberg movie or lucas film and just completely remake it with furrys. Jones will be played by a Chiby Gundam suit, whislt the temple of doom will be the Ninja warrior set. Jaws will be made by the resurrected Akira Kurasawa(My favorite director of all time so no disrespect) the shark will be a Pokemon, and sherrif brody will be played by Mokoto Nagano(He Rocks so it might redeem the whole movie unintentionally). So go DCHAVE your thought saved the day

Ehhh, Japan's gonna adopt whatever Japan feels like adopting, and they'll monkey with it and tart it up and do their thing with it. I mean, you've seen "Blade Runner" and "Streets Of Fire", right? Well, so did some Japanese dudes, and then they made "Bubblegum Crisis". Thanks, Japan!

I welcome a "Ghost In The Shell" movie, for I am seriously starved for cyberpunk eye candy.
