'Sadness' Info, Screenshot Released

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, April 14, 2008 8:17 AM

Check out the above screenshot for mysterious Wii game Sadness.

We've been hearing dribs of info about this gothic-horror-adventure game for at least the last year and a half, and yet it never seems any closer to coming out, so we can judge if the moody, black-and-white possibilities of the few screenshots that have dropped can be realized in a full game.

Today, we learned that the game will be based on the Gamebryo engine.

“Without a doubt, Gamebryo is the most powerful engine available for the Wii. After getting familiar with the engine several months ago we made the decision to choose Gamebryo. Since then, our team has been working on Sadness and we are quite impressed,” said Tomasz Wisniowski, Project Manager of Nibris. “We will have quite a few graphical effects in our game, which some believe are impossible to attain on the Wii. Gamebryo helped make it possible. We are firmly convinced we made the right choice.”

Okay, so impossible-to-achieve effects... sounds terrific.

At the risk of spreading rumors (that we totally made up), we heard the real reason Sadness is taking so long to release is that early builds of the games caused panic attacks. Some easily-impressionable early playtesters have had adverse psychological reactions as well, some serious enough to require hospitalization...

I made up that part about the panic attacks. It says so in the article.

I thought Nintendo was catering towards the casual gamers.

A gothic-horror-adventure game seems geared towards hard-core gamers, and doesn't sound very family-friendly, especially that part about graphical effects that are nearly impossible to attain on the Wii.

Not everything on the Wii is for casual gamers, there's enough stuff out there for the "hardcore" such as myself. But that being said, I am extremely intrigued by this game. As an avid wii fan why is this the first I've heard of it?! Looks like there's another game I have to look out for on my horizon

@Hoodwink-
I think you've been hoodwinked. Most of the "core" games on the Wii could have been done much better on another system. For instance, SSBB (does that even count as "core"?) could have been done better on another system. I know the racing games (I'm talking about NFS: Carbon) could have been done, and were done better, on other systems. Red Steel was an absolute fail.

@Blades-
Naw, "core" is just an arbitrary definition used by whomever wants to use it for whatever purpose. My meaning is that there are such games out there, for an oldschool adventure enthusiast you've got Zack & Wiki, for the action/adventure you've got the Zeldas and the Metroids. Fun platformers in Mario and a plethora of party games as well. In my definition of "core" you don't need just jaw-dropping graphics or to be an FPS. Just needs to have gripping gameplay for hours of fun, and it definitely has that in plenty of genres...

@Hoodwink

I am right there with you on this one. Personally, I could get enough gaming out of my wii. I got enough gaming out of my gamecube. But now I am spoiled, so I own all three current gen systems and 125+ games that I've collected through the years. I feel like I have too much crap already. And guess what? I won't stop buying :)
