Under 18? Get Off My Google!

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, March 28, 2008 10:49 AM

A clause in Google's Terms of Service actually means that no one under 18 is allowed to use Google or any of its services (search, GMail, YouTube).

"You may not use ... Google's products, software, services and web sites ... and may not accept the Terms if ... you are not of legal age to form a binding contract with Google."

Thing is, all of the 50 states require a person to be at least 18 to form a binding contract. Therefore, if you're under 18, get off that Google. You're breaking the law!

A Google spokesperson responded, saying:

"We're not in a position to verify the age or legal status of any user, given the tremendous number of users accessing Google services. That said, when we become aware of a user who is violating our Terms of Service, including not being of proper age to accept the Terms of Service, we take appropriate action, which could include the termination of the user's Google Account."

Hopefully, this will lead to less YouTube spam. The less video blogs of 14 year olds who thinks they're the best thing in the world... the better off we are as a society.

Of course, there's little chance this will actually be enforced and is most likely there for legal reasons to protect Google from certain things.

Posted by Gonzy2 - Friday, March 28, 2008 11:34 AM

Wow, that's realistic. I'm sure they will all go and get there parents permission first *note of sarcasm*

Posted by Xsi9mm - Friday, March 28, 2008 11:39 AM

This is great, Except they should really do it for up to 21 only because an 18 year old is still to young and annoying infact any age group is annoying google should shut down because its to good for any age group. does that make sense?

Posted by PMantix84 - Friday, March 28, 2008 11:54 AM

Google is just covering their arse... they don't want to be held liable for anything, including your stupid kids (or you)

Posted by plasticgiantcatbear - Friday, March 28, 2008 11:55 AM

@Xsi9mm
Makes no sense whatsoever.

Kids are going to use Google anyway (unless they're poor, haha), so big deal!

Posted by bullet53 - Friday, March 28, 2008 12:06 PM

imagine how many views will google lose if only people over 18 could use it, they could ask for an age verification but obviously they wont...... well youtube would be better without all the stupid video blogs posted by 14 years old emo kids "ohh my god! why is life so sad! im gonna cut myself!"

ps. age verification wont stop kids from using google or youtube

Posted by darthrevan1138 - Friday, March 28, 2008 12:14 PM

this is exactly like drugs. just because it's illegal doesnt mean people arent going to do it

Posted by XxGodsMistakeXx - Friday, March 28, 2008 1:09 PM

What about the kids using google for porn? Not that I've ever done that or anything (Cough)

Posted by mcp3 - Friday, March 28, 2008 1:21 PM

This makes no sense why make this law hella late why didnt google get the reason of why they is doin this?

Posted by Frankotaco - Friday, March 28, 2008 2:02 PM

this is only for liability issues. they wont ever enforce it, or care to enforce it. it just has to be stated so that if a stupid emo kid kills himself cus someone rags on his youtube video blog they aren't held liable. because legally he wasn't supposed to be using the service at all. although you do not need to sign anything to use the search. you have to accept a terms and conditions for an account, but not to search. so if you only use search you are never informed of this clause and not held liable unless the start making you accept every time you search, which would be lame.

Posted by shifforbrainz - Friday, March 28, 2008 2:03 PM

yes remove the stuped 12 year olds but not the ones that are 15,16,17 years old.

It's sad how many people here are missing the point entirely, come on. Google is not banning anybody, they are not going to make anybody prove their age. Anyone under 18 is going to use it anyway, this is just a precautionary measure.

Posted by geekkyle - Saturday, March 29, 2008 4:59 AM

i fought the law and i won

Posted by Tonamo012 - Saturday, March 29, 2008 9:45 PM

I don't see how they think that they will ver be able to regulate it people lie all the time
i think it is so if they get into a coart fight they can be like they were under age so they were breaking the law

Posted by kloolk - Sunday, March 30, 2008 3:11 PM

so almost everyone under 18 that used google is breaking the law.
does that mean i have to go to juvie?

THIS IS MADNESS! There's no way this can be enforced! We must find a way to destroy all those who dare to enforce this!

PS @geekkyle
I also fought the law and won...

rofl

Except Youtube lets 13 year olds register. If you register with a birthday that is 13 Youtube lets you in. Same with GMail, Google Accounts , etc.

So basically they don't know whats in their own contract XD
