'GT5' A Year Away, $100 For "Full" Game?

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, March 27, 2008 4:28 PM

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is set to release in the US on April 15 and will run you $40. It should serve as a holdover, but it was revealed that the final, full version of GT5 is still over a year away.

Now, Prologue is better than nothing, but that means we'll end up shelling out $100 for the entire GT5 experience.

TechConsumer notes that this could unfortunately lead to a trend of developers releasing partial versions of their games while they work to finish it up.

Let's take a look at this.

How do you feel about paying $40 for a preview of a game that won't be out for another year? Think about this in a general way.

It's decently suited for a game like Gran Turismo because the full version just adds cars, tracks, and other features. Imagine Rockstar releasing Grand Theft Auto IV: Prologue a year before the game comes out. It let's you check out the engine (which might not even be finished) and play the first 10 missions or so.

Would that be a good thing? We realize that something like that probably won't happen, but it's basically what Sony is doing with GT5.

Multiplayer betas are different. Those are useful (and sell copies of Crackdown) for hammering out problems so things work on release day. This is a great way to preview your product before it's ready to ship as well as get useful data on your game.

Would you pay for multiplayer betas? How about if they are bundled with another game like Halo 3/Crackdown? Part of a pre-order bonus like Battlefield: Bad Company or Metal Gear Online?

Leave your comments and we'll read them, honest.

trust me it will be worth it

Think of it as a big teaser or a bigger beta version of a game. I wonder if Sony will use this as a way for gamers to tell them what they want in the final version of the game. Yeah, it sucks that we have to wait. But honestly, for those 360 owners out there, if MSoft offered you a prologue of Halo 4 wouldn't you want it even if the game still needed a year to be fully developed. Hopefully this prologue does it's job and is everything that it is expected to be and gets the buyers sucked in. I'm looking forward to it.

Posted by turdismiller - Thursday, March 27, 2008 5:22 PM
it's a bad idea no matter what system you're on. If one's paying for these prologue (beta?) games to hammer out the developer's problems then one is paying to do their work, which, as was discussed in a story on the Feed some days ago (was it the Rainbow Six 2 not working on PS3?), the developers aren't doing anyway. Why is it so many games are released with such major problems these days, and then they have to be patched just to work? Now we're supposed to pay for partial, unfinished games.

Posted by GrandReaper999 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 5:24 PM
lol, hmmmmm. That's not very cool. Why don't they just add the whole thing to the waiting list?

Posted by wag317 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 5:32 PM
Well what I don't understand is why I would want to pay for 2 parts of the GT series. I would maybe shell out money for a "beta" of GTA or another open-ended game. I wouldn't pay for the "beta" because I don't think I should pay 40 dollars to "test drive" a game and find bugs so that developers can work out the kinks only to sell me another polished game for 60 dollars more. We live in an era of video games where all high end systems have hard drives and almost all games can be "patched" if needed. I don't see the need (unless you have a wii) to buy an updated form of a game you already purchased. Expansion pak yes, update? no thanks.

Posted by schroetlin - Thursday, March 27, 2008 5:39 PM
I think the whole idea is just bogus. To me it just seems like a way for them to say sure buy it now but we won't put everything there and fix any glitches unless you buy a pack.

It would be better if they just finish the game and then release new content that is an option. Really think of the online multiplayer down the line, not everyone will probably buy every little track out there so matchmaking take forever trying to match the content that everyone for that race would have.

Not only that think of the hard drive space being used to store all of that content from the online market. I don't know exactly how much it would take up but it would probably be a lot

Sorry to keep going like this but I just think they should finish the game and release it all on one disk that way everyone has a taste.

I am a little uneasy about paying for GT5 Prologue as I agree that it may just be a beta with bugs that Sony will want to hear about. I agree with another reader that we may end up doing the work for developers etc. The least Sony can do is offer a $40 rebate for those people who pay for Prologue then buy GT5 next year.

these blu-ray games that can hold so much content are looking to be a rip off if you ask me. like w/ mgs4 and it's other "online" game.

Posted by bleahy - Thursday, March 27, 2008 5:57 PM
@staychisel,

For the last time... Metal Gear Online is a separate game.

You get a free preview version included with MGS4. They are giving that to you.

Also, Kojima is nuts and will fill a blu-ray no problem.

why Halo Wars wasnt pack on with Halo 3? its a Separate game idiot!!

Posted by staychisel - Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:09 PM
icedbirdman, halo wars? totally different game buddy. your comparison doesn't even make sense!

Posted by staychisel - Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:15 PM
@bleahy, yes i understand that, but if you see some the of the comments these kids come up with about paying for xbox live then you'll understand where i'm coming from. paying for another disc just to play online seems like a ripoff to me compared to the small price of $49.99/13 months of xbox live.

It's gonna be worth it....

its a whole new game!!! It wont have anything to to do with the main story, what the f live got to with that!!!

Posted by dewmandew7 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:33 PM
It's got more than $40 worth of content, though. There are plenty of Wii Games that they charge fifty dollars for that don't have a quarter of the content in Prologue. If there's not enough bang for you buck, wait until the full version comes out.

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:33 PM
id pay for it. cause if they are a year apart, its like 2 separate games. definitely gonna be worth it than waiting a whole nother year.

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:36 PM
plus the gran turismo series is one of those games that come out with a new one every 3 or 4 years at a time. gt3 came in 2001 and gt4 came in 2005, now gt5 wont come out for another year so 2009. definitely worth the 100 in the long run.

Posted by staychisel - Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:37 PM
icedbirdman, you back on the pipe?

Posted by icedbirdman - Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:37 PM
GT5P is like a polished sample of what you can expect from the real game. they went through the trouble of making a sound track and there are a lot of cars on the games and tracks. its totally worth it.

Posted by dewmandew7 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 6:38 PM
P.S. The game has 60-odd cars, several tracks, online mode, and GTTV, if I'm not mistaken. You're definitely getting your money out of it. The full game will have hundreds of cars (closer to the thousand mark).

Posted by brkr12002 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 7:17 PM
No thanks, I'll pass. Didn't really like the feel of driving the cars in GTHD. Maybe it was the fact of no rumble or something else. I'll wait for the real deal.
Also, MGS3 had the online packed in with the original game, but online support was later dropped. Maybe MGS online can include bots or something, just in case online is dropped down the road. I'd love to play some MGS3 Online right now Konami.

Posted by Whatsa - Thursday, March 27, 2008 7:21 PM
Crackdown was a good game anyway.. it's a futuristic GTA which comes with a free Halo 3 multiplayer beta :)

I have a feeling they're just releasing a "Prologue" because they know they can't fit all the data on the slow and not-so-big blu-ray disc. So they're just saying.. okay we'll sell this little part and sell the whole part which costs 2.5 times as much so we can get more money and act like the blu-ray disc has a lot of space still.

Posted by icedbirdman - Thursday, March 27, 2008 7:26 PM
Whatsa
youre a f idiot!!!

Posted by JACKMEOFF - Thursday, March 27, 2008 7:40 PM
im pretty sure this an unofficial giant beta

Posted by Jedihunter15 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 7:45 PM
That is a rip off. Blu Ray apparently isnt as good or as capable as everyone once thought, huh?

This year is supposed to be the PS3's year, yet we are constantly bombarded with negative information about its games. Gran Turismo, or any game for that matter, is NOT and will NEVER be good enough to shell out 100 bucks for.

Posted by LoveLifeMusic - Thursday, March 27, 2008 7:53 PM
I rather buy a game with a preview of another game that's cool or a beta. Like Crackdown and the Street fighter HD remix. I don't like the idea of paying 100 dollars for a driving game. It should come with that porche wheel. For PS3 owners.

Posted by icedbirdman - Thursday, March 27, 2008 8:06 PM
How is this a failure for Bluray, can someone please explain that to me, again this game is a full game that is only a slice of the full game that comes out next year. It has more cars and more tracks than any 360 racer so what the hell are yall talking about xbots?

Posted by icedbirdman - Thursday, March 27, 2008 8:08 PM
and idiots read the damn editorial, 40 for the Prologue and 60 for the real game equals a $100 dollars not the actual game costing a hundred.

Posted by DarkerPiE123 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 8:13 PM
that would be cool. But come on $40 for a peice of a game. i would rather wait an spend the $100 on the full game rather than spend $140 on a half an full game. but that sux for u ps3 owners. i own a 360. and ps3 SUX!!!!!!!!!

I was going to post earlier today, how i'm not going to pay to do their betatesting. What a joke.

Oh- and I forgot to mention, since when did our console having an internet connection and storage make it ok to release buggy games and patch them later down the road?

Posted by mcp3 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:14 PM
Damn I hope that $100 thing aint gone become a habbit for big ass games. Because in that case I aint gone buy the Prologue. I got patients.

Gran Turismo 5 better be able to pleasure me sexually for a hundred simoleans.

Posted by mcp3 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:49 PM
Now that makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up icebirdman even though Im a slow person.

Posted by lateralsnowflake - Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:50 PM
Also, I understand the 40/60 pricing scheme, but it's still a ripoff. It's kind of like Windows Vista: you have to pay for Home Basic, but if you want advanced features, you have to go and pay more, etc.

Kind of disappointing.

Posted by mcp3 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:55 PM
I know its not rocketscience but G4 does need to re-word that $100 for full game.

Posted by Majin_Neo - Thursday, March 27, 2008 10:24 PM
They do need to re-word that I totally agree. But the thing is that they have done this before. If its going to start a new trend why wouldn't it have picked up by now? They did this back on the ps2 and no one really seemed to be busting their balls for it then. Why start now? If it holds the fans over then let them worry about it. For those with patience, wait it out. No matter which one you buy...or both you will have a good experience.

Posted by MidnightMarauder - Thursday, March 27, 2008 10:56 PM
Wow, there is a serious lack of common sense knowledge on the G4 forums.

Let me help for the mentally inept...

1. The full GT5 game does not cost $100, if you buy Prologue then you spent $40, and if you buy the full game you spent $60, making the total amount, $100. Thus you don't have to spend $100 dollars.

2. Those dumping on Blu-Ray and saying it's not as big as previosuly thought, are you stupid? The content on Prologue is going to be in the full game. Besides the game can also be downloaded on the PSN, you can get now if you make a Japan account.

3.This is geared twoard die hard fans, and it sounds like the majority of people posting in here are not hardcore fans, so why does this matter to you?

Prologue alone will probably be bigger and better than any other racer on the market, and it's not even the full game.

Besides with graphics that good how much do you think it cost them to make that?

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, March 27, 2008 11:20 PM
THE FULL GAME WILL BE $60!

THE PROLOGUE, WHICH IS BASICALLY A BIG DEMO, IS ONLY $40

OMG YOU PEOPLE ARE RETARTED AND THANK YOU G4 FOR CONFUSING THE F%CK OUT OF EVERYONE THANKS.

so instead of waiting a whole year to play the game, you can buy a big demo of the game to hold you off until the full game is complete.

Posted by svexo1 - Friday, March 28, 2008 12:15 AM
There is nothing in the article that says the game will be $100. Besides this is one of the worst articles I've ever read, it's mostly opinion. It's mostly a rant about how much the author doesn't like the idea of Prologue.

Posted by ShinGino - Friday, March 28, 2008 1:31 AM
.

IT'S BEEN DONE BEFORE! YOU GUYS ARE SLOW!

They did a "Prologue" for GT4 on the PS2 as well,
and it was really successful,
that's why they're doing it with GT5 too.

NO REGULAR DEMO GIVES YOU:

Unlockables, Online Events, 100+ hours of gameplay, 70 cars, etc.

It's $20 less than the regular price for a game!

P.S.: Why is there a pic of GT4 in this article!?

.

Posted by DutchThrone - Friday, March 28, 2008 1:34 AM
I would have paid $60 for prologue and $100 for the full GT5. Gran Turismo is the best!

PS I know it's only $40 and $60.

Posted by jabberman - Friday, March 28, 2008 3:40 AM
I would buy a PS3 ONLY for GT5. I am a huge mark for this series & if the final list of cars numbers close to a thousand, it will be worth the $100 price tag.

Posted by notinjuschillin - Friday, March 28, 2008 6:14 AM
40 big ones for part of a game.
Then a year later another 60 greenbacks for the same game and some extras?

No thanks. I'll wait another year.

Buying the same game twice is moronic.
and thinking youre getting 2 different games is lunacy.

Posted by staychisel - Friday, March 28, 2008 6:21 AM
i get it, thanks for the clarification everyone. but i still say it's a ripoff. if halo were to release "Halo 4: The Prequel" some of you would probably die laughing. You don't think that the creators are thinking $$$?

Posted by c1001z - Friday, March 28, 2008 7:20 AM
icebirdman sounds like a very angry chap and possibly suffers from microfalice.

anyway the topic at hand; $100 FOR A RACING GAME!?!?
an american publisher would never fleece an honest gammer for $100.

USAUSAUSA!!!!

Posted by mechabeast - Friday, March 28, 2008 7:29 AM
Yah, no one would pay for a game then spend extra money to buy cars and tracks that should have been released when the game first came out....oh wait a minute.

Posted by atari05 - Friday, March 28, 2008 9:52 AM
I see like this. If the game has good content and is pretty much a full fledged game, then to me, its no issue. Then in reality the stuff that will be out in a years time will pretty much be like a HUGE DLC package or a expansion pack.

I see nothing wrong with a having a big vision with a game. As long as the framework is solid, do what you will.

I wish more sports games would do this as having a new game every year is horse crap.

Posted by dougdangger - Friday, March 28, 2008 10:07 AM
Betas have always been free. In the past you may have to pay for them for the cost of the disc.

This is just a ploy for Sony to buy more time. The final product sucks, frame rates and jaggies plague it, just like majority of PS3 games. They need to buy more time so what do they do? They sell you an unfinished product.

It's like buying a car without an engine and transmission. They charge you 66% of the full price of the car. Then after a year, they sell you the engine and transmission for 100% of the price of the car. So you paid 166% for a product that may not even be worth it.

Sony is scamming PS3 owners. You gotta wake up.

@atari05, if that's what helps you sleep at night

Posted by LoveLifeMusic - Friday, March 28, 2008 11:49 AM
I'm a slow person but why would you pay $40 just to wait to pay $60, any way you put it, $100. Beside if you don't pay for the demo then what would you play till then. It would be reasonable if you had games to tie you over. Just saying flaming with a blow torch.

Posted by ShinGino - Friday, March 28, 2008 12:17 PM

if you can't wait a year, buy it and don't complain later that you got ripped off. if you don't wanna get ripped off, then don't buy it and wait. there's no reason to complain here.
