'Battlefield: Bad Company' Boycott

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, March 27, 2008 11:35 AM

Battlefield: Bad Company is coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360, but carries with it a somewhat troubling DLC plan. EA and DICE are making certain weapons available for purchase.

Five weapons will be available free through pre-launch promotions (and after the game releases), but another five will only be available through the "Gold Version" or paid DLC.

SarcasticGamer is calling for a boycott of the game and is trying to start a campaign to put a stop to DLC like this.

DLC is great when it's true bonus content like additional multiplayer levels, extra story arcs and locations, or new characters. When we're talking about weapons that even EA admits "do not create an advantage/disadvantage for players who do not opt to buy new items" we run into an ideological problem.

EA wants you to buy these weapons to customize your character to your playstyle, but then admits that your money doesn't buy you an advantage. We agree with that aspect, but then question why we're paying for these weapons.

Would you pay for new weapons in a multiplayer game?

SarcasticGamer: BF:BC’s DLC is just plain BS. Boycott this game.

I was interested in this game, up until I heard about this. Don't care now ;)

Actually, I don't see a problem with offering new weapons to people if they don't offer any advantage. I can't see how a weapon can't offer an advantage or disadvantage, though, unless it only has a different look (same damage, range, projectile path, accuracy, but different picture). If it is really just a different look so what. Hell people pay for those stupid dashboard themes, what advantage do you get there?

Now if you are selling an advantage, then that is bull. I paid for the game, I shouldn't be hurt cause I can't afford more.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, March 27, 2008 11:47 AM
That is stupid anyone who needs to buy extra guns that give you no advantage deserves to be ript off. I still want to play this game because it looks like it is the only game comming out that could pull me away from COD4. But i will definatly not be buying any new weapons that offer no advantages.

Posted by yoshiarecool - Thursday, March 27, 2008 11:52 AM
This is bs
They offer you weapons to buy and then they dont give you an advantage
Congratulations EA, your guns have become the new horse armor

Posted by marucci6echo - Thursday, March 27, 2008 11:53 AM
Well I played the beta and the graphics and gameplay were simply awesome. If I get around to pay 5 bucks for some new weapons...it's not the end of the world and it won't detract from the gameplay for me. Why don't people get upset when racing games charge money for new vehicles and tracks? Who cares. If you want the stuff you'll but it, if you don't want you won't buy it.

Posted by bleahy - Thursday, March 27, 2008 11:55 AM
I think an issue is that this is Day 1 DLC. The guns are done and in the game... you just have to buy them to unlock them.

They are holding back content that you should get for your $60.

True DLC should be extra content that was created or finished after the game was released.

Posted by JDarkley - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:05 PM
Whether or not the DLC weapons give you you an advantage or not is besides the point. This is just EA making an obvious grab at our wallets. That's BS. I was originally interested in this game, and I still am really, but I'm joining this boycott unless EA changes this.

Posted by collinE - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:06 PM
Exactly. If it was something that they worked on after the final product, then you're paying for extra content and that's fine. but if they're saying you have to pay extra to get the complete features of the game, then that's lame.

I support the boycott. Developers always say that the consumers vote, buy buying or not. I say we vote no.

Posted by vole182 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:15 PM
SCREW YOU EA!
I am not paying you 60 bones for half a game!

Posted by Jake1086 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:24 PM
whats the difference between this and halo making you pay for the extra maps? In halo you have to pay to play DLC on line(well had to) and in this you have to pay to have some cool guns so whats the big deal

Posted by anonomousperson - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:31 PM
I want my weapons that are already there. As a gamer, I have the right to use whatever weapon I choose as long as it is already in the disk.

Posted by Tasomo - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:33 PM
Jesus Christ, what a bunch of sheep.

"Waaaaaaah!!! EA's releasing guns that are comparable to ones already in-game but they don't give me super stats! I actually have to play the game to unlock the good guns!! EA only wants my money and won't give me anything for it!! WAAAAAAAH!!!"

I am so sick of the BS that gets thrown around just because it's EA doing it. Boycott a game because they're offering guns for sale that DON'T completely screw over players who don't buy them? THIS is getting complaints?

Anyone bother looking into what it would cost you to buy all the DLC offered for Ace Combat 6? Yeah...over 120 bucks but no one says a damn thing because this time it's EA. Hell, they're selling you missions that were supposed to be IN the game at $3.75 PER MISSION and no one's calling them on it.

This is just pure "it's EA so we HAVE to have them" crap. Open your eyes people.

Posted by gwilo007 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:36 PM
F' that I am not buying it!!!

Posted by hetman - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:42 PM
Ace combat sux. But with the halo thing. You are getting a different game expreince when you buy the maps, and they were worked on post production of the game. But I will not boycott this game it looks to awesome. And eventually they will give the guns away for free. YOu know after the idiots have finished buying them.

Posted by kiohto - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:42 PM
I agree, thats a pretty crappy idea
reminds me of SONY, remember thats what they planned to do with Gran Turismo 5, you would basically buy the menu for 50 bucks and then dish out pretty much another 60 or so for tracks and cars

Posted by banodyne - Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:52 PM
When I wrote we should boycott the game in a 1up post a psycho fanboy sent me a private message.

"You don't tell me, or anyone else, what to do."

Posted by NATAS999 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:04 PM
I love how DLC is becoming a new way to make you pay $60 for a game that doesnt have everything already in it. It reminds me of last years GameInformer april fools joke about how EA was going to make people pay for air in the football on madden.

Posted by Redd75 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:05 PM
I'm not sure what I think about this, but I do know that I was pissed yesterday when I opened an email from 'Battlefield' saying I could sign up for a beta test of this game (yay), only to scroll down and read "for the 360" (dammit!) That kinda soured me.

Posted by unaturalx - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:11 PM
Why doesn't anyone complaine about DLC for Rock Band or Guitar Hero? What's the total cost if you've downloaded every song they've offered.

I will not be buying this!
1. I'll just continue to play COD4
2. Then GTA4
3. Then GOW2
4. Continue to play GOW2...

Posted by everlastinggaze - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:18 PM
i think this is fine. the problem would be if the guns made you stronger that someone who didnt buy them. this way, it's just to cusommize the look and maybe the guns aren't better, but different, and you can buy one that you'd feel more comfortable with. it's better than if these guns made you more powerful than someone who didn't buy it. that would suck

Posted by mberko1 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:24 PM
only 5 guns though w/o dlc is pretty weak. hopefully thats not the case. but this game does look awesome, like COD4 but more versatile. And the sounds is so realistic

Posted by DETHMOKIL - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:28 PM
Well, from what I here its a stinker anyway, no-one was complaining about that 15 doller Strangle Hold map pack thing. sorta, not my point.

RB downloads are diff, you Like that song, you get that song, But these weps, I have no idea what they are, you why should I buy em?

Posted by Tasomo - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:31 PM
Again, as pointed out with Rock Band and Guitar Hero, people don't care about the abuse of DLC...they only care that EA did something. It doesn't matter if it's good or bad. If EA does anything, people will complain and complain...

Posted by Mynock - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:33 PM
Ok. I have been queit for a while now, but this is stupid. The only reason I see anyone buying these new weapons is to be a jerk saying "I have lots of money, and no life". If anyone does buy those weapons, and I am playing online and see them. They will become my new play toy.

Posted by DETHMOKIL - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:33 PM
oh wait... theres ONLY 5 weapons in game!? WTF mate.

THATS the worst news out of this! Geez... man, some one prove me wrong please.

This is no different from the first batch of DLC for Chromehounds back in the day (yes, a Wednesday). But From Software at least had the decency to make the first round of DLC parts FREE.
This is the WRONG way to go about DLC though. Yes, we have the option to ignore the petty greed of EA and not buy it...but the fact remains that they PURPOSELY left out those weapons to hit their gamers with an extra charge per capita if they want the content.

Way to cater to your audience, EA, kudos do not go to you...I steal your kudos and fart on them!

Posted by mberko1 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:42 PM
I want to cut of EA's balls and shove em up their ass, so that when they sh%t, they sh%t on their balls!

We can thank Microshaft for all of this. They were the ones who started the "Let's Sell Half Of The Original Game Content As 'Bonus Material'" gimmick. Boycott it.

Posted by AnthonyNoc - Thursday, March 27, 2008 1:59 PM
I have paid for Guitar Hero songs and Halo 3 maps, but I would not pay for this. I paid $60 for the game, why should I pay more for standard content. Boycott.

Posted by collinE - Thursday, March 27, 2008 2:01 PM
Now that I think about it, game studios are about twice as many people as they used to be and games need to be twice as cool, but they only cost, what, 10 more bones than they used to.

I can see that it's getting tougher for your average developer to put all that extra work into a game and if it's not a huge hit, then it's all for nothing. and not a huge profit. so they do this to try and squeeze a little extra profit out of it.

I still think it's lame, though.

Posted by Madbagofhorses - Thursday, March 27, 2008 2:04 PM
Boycott accepted, down with BF2 and costly downloadable content. GO BACK TO -only- UNLOCKABLES!

Posted by crimeboss - Thursday, March 27, 2008 2:18 PM
Hmm. Looks like I am alone on this but I did not really mind buying horse armor and would probably buy a gun for this game if I thought it looked cool.

Posted by Fx_Avatar - Thursday, March 27, 2008 2:27 PM
My biggest problem is that EA wants you to pay full price for a game, that they have already said will have some of the features held back so that you can.. pay for them.. ya. I understand maps, ones that did not exist before the game was released, but no, this is content that they have now.. ready for the game.. that they are going to have you pay extra for. What is next.. in game ad's too?.. I was ticked when I seen my first in game ad with BF2142.. The thing is this, IF you are going to place ad's into the game, lower the price of the game. If you are going to develop content for the game and then release it later, make it free. I understand making money, but don't rip us off.

Posted by travelmaps - Thursday, March 27, 2008 2:47 PM
umm... "Anyone bother looking into what it would cost you to buy all the DLC offered for Ace Combat 6? Yeah...over 120 bucks" etc etc

well i guess since you're like THE person that actually plays that game then it's your job to call them on it. maybe it looks liek everyone is always ragging on ea because theyre so freaking huge!
they produce a rediculous amount of the market and are in a position to literally set the trends of gaming. we're not even talking about whole missions here... it's some guns... literally just guns now you have to go out and buy for your game! imagine what you'll have to pay ea for an actual mission... twice the guns?
why not it took way more than twice the time to create?

This is total BS and someone seriously needs to give EA a very huge reality check.

Posted by cryfordawn - Thursday, March 27, 2008 2:53 PM
Honestly EA is trying to take over the gaming world. Every week there is another EA take over and honestly the push for a 1 console system is a horrible idea. EA has become the nazi germany that we all hate and honestly this game looks like crap. COD4 blows this game away and I find myself giving a pass more and more on EA games just because I don't like they way they do business. They use to be a great company, and now all it seems like they want to do is dominate the game industry with a sub par company. HEY lets take over companies like Bio-Ware and destroy them. Why not we have more money then god! I say let them burn in hell and stop buying there product. They wanna play with fire, we can burn them down as well :)

Posted by travelmaps - Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:07 PM
hmm or think about it this way... buying that game is like buying the die hard box set except you have to pay extra for certain guns or swear words to be in the movie.

oh you wanted bruce willis to say yipeekiyay mother f'er? oh and more than once? yeah that'll be 5 bucks per f.

i guess that makes EA a cheap whore(and just as dirty as one)

Posted by Tasomo - Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:08 PM
Awwww, that's so cute, travelmaps. You're insinuating that only I have ever played Ace 6. Pure genius and so original to boot. Do you do weddings and bar mitzvahs too?

I can tell you never bothered to read anything with that statement of "literally just guns now you have to go out and buy for your game!" line. Does someone have to beat it into your skull that it's *drum roll*:

A) 5 guns
B) They have identical stats to the starting guns

The guns that are better are not bought from XBL, they are UNLOCKED. As it stands there are 20 starting guns (4 for each kit), 5 DLC guns (with the same stats as the starting guns and the ones people here are whining about) and 5 guns that are only available to Limited Edition buyers OR regular buyers who want to purchase them piecemeal.

The good guns, the ones you apparently think are the ones offered for DLC, are all unlockable and you earn unlock credits as you go up in rank.

Posted by travelmaps - Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:17 PM
um... apparently you are insinuating that i thought the guns were better. i said guns... not better guns. or bfg's. geez reading what someone said and thinking they said something entirely different... sooooo original. do you also do political coverage?

The Rock Band and Guitar Hero and most other games they make it after the game releases. With this its like they are givning you a cheeseburger, but then they take away the cheese that was already on it and ask you to pay extra to have it back. Either way I still don't download DLC wether it is made after the game or not.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:25 PM
I do not care. It just filler anyone who buys this either has to much money. "which really is not a problem so who cares." or they are such deuchbags they get a filling of superiority having something other players do not have. Either way the game looks awesome and I cannot wait until it is released.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:26 PM
@panoot. I dunno if you know this or not but Mcdonalds charges you more for a chessburger than they do a hamburger. So your analogy is an epic fail.

Posted by Tasomo - Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:27 PM
You stated that now you have to buy them. Given the rest of your statement and the total lack of any indication of something simple like "in order to have the entire game" in order to validate any other opinion beyond "these guns have to be bought by players in order to even be competitive", you're not leaving room for options here.

Perhaps you should write what you mean rather than going "nuh uh!!" after someone calls you on it later.

Posted by travelmaps - Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:39 PM
ok then. what i mean is that you're obviously not an intelligent person even though you spend the extra effort into making it appear that way via capital letters and an attempt at correct punctuation in a forum like environment.

um... seriously though what did you think i meant buy now you have to buy them? "yes, now you have to buy the guns to NOT have the entire game."? WAT.

and why would i be leaving room for options? unlike some people(apparently you) i just have one meaning per sentence, usually along the lines of what i actually freaking say.

again: 0.o.

oh just to clarify what "0.o" is since you obviously won't be able to figure it out on your own... that's an attempt to show my facial expression through text.

Ok,one thing is to pay for new maps that they work on it AFTER the game was released,it would be fair, but pay for things in a game you already paid for when you bought it,it's totaly stupid,if people start falling for that, you will see more and more of that kind of crap in future games, and than the regular games that cost $59.99 will start to cost $100.00!!!
Anyway,a game with only five guns??What a bullcrap is that,CoD4 has more than that, and nobody had to pay for it,and that's a stand for games, but if you pay for those 5 guns on EAs game, you soon start to see more of that bullcrap on all games, and than you're gonna up paying more and more for less,so open you're eyes and don't fall for that crap!!!!

Posted by altm75 - Thursday, March 27, 2008 5:07 PM
What about paying a builder to build a house for you,you pay him,he build it,and after he finnish he gives you the key of only 5 doors and the other 5 you will have to pay more,if you wanna get it,pretty cool isn't it?

Travel, you do realize you're lying...right?

"literally just guns now you have to go out and buy for your game! imagine what you'll have to pay ea for an actual mission... twice the guns?"

You can't even get one meaning out of a sentence, let alone multiple. If you were half as intelligent as you're claiming to be you'd have figured out how to actually say something rather than make with the weak insults and sad sad emotes.

Don't let that stop you though. Let that unfounded EA hate just flow through you. Thump your chest proudly and declare yourself the e-victor as you decry a company for doing something that countless companies have done before it and claim that only EA is the bad one here. Ignore the past, only your baseless e-rage of today matters!

Posted by travelmaps - Thursday, March 27, 2008 9:02 PM
holy crap im losing my patience with you. lying about what? you just quoted me... you failed to make a point at all or explain why i lied and somehow im the one that cant have a meaning? can you actually read?

while it is true i was talking about ea(as this game produced by ea is the topic of conversation)... did i say it was only ea that i frowned upon for this? according to you in your alternate little world im sure somewhere i did... but in earth 0, no. i never said that it doesnt drive me insane to have to pay 5 bucks for a car in pgr. i think thats entirely bs as well. not that you care as im sure you will no doubt create some alternate meaning for everything ive said... omg i just realized what you are.

this is gona be the same crap that happened with battle field 2 all the noobs are gona get unlocks and spam them because they think the unlocks are better. pros at the battlefield series will tell you they are not. once you build a level of skill you will pwn any noob with an expensive gun.

For instance the pkm compared to the rpk. rpk wins every time etc. unlocks in these games get over rated because people like to blame their own noobieness on them.

You're lying as you're running your mouth off about making your point when you haven't made anything but a load of gibberish whose sole consistent backup is lamer and lamer insults.

I agree with "bleahy " This is an outrage as a long time BF player. PC and console I find this insulting ! I was excited about this game I said "finally a console version of my favorite PC game that can hold up". Now I'm not picking this scam up till it hits $30 then I might actually be able to afford all the extra crap that should of been included with the first release. We must stand up to this as a gamming community both 360 and Ps3 players must unite and boycott this crap to keep other game makers from getting any funny ideas about doing this in the future !!!

Posted by kevin731 - Friday, March 28, 2008 7:03 AM
This sort of stuff is bull. You have some greedy game companies that know they can con people out of more money by buying extras that should have been in the game in the first place. I get so upset when you have to pay a high price for extra maps that are free alot of the time on the PC. I do thank those game companies that allow the map packs to become free after a certain amount of time and curse those that don't. I have no real desire to buy Battlefield: Bad Company and this crap makes it more unlikely that I will.

Posted by travelmaps - Friday, March 28, 2008 9:07 AM
and you dodge my point again. i directly asked you how i was lying and you didn't respond. you just repeated that i was lying and not making a point. how was i lying? how is there no point? maybe if you can answer a simple question ppl wouldn't have to call out your blatant stupidity.

Tasomo is right, EA is only allowing players to buy guns that don't make a difference in gameplay if they so choose. Those who buy the guns won't have an advantage over those who don't, so what does it matter? While I agree that to release these guns on Day One is cheap, it's not like you're being forced to buy it. The game's balance is left alone, so I don't see a problem.

Posted by VinDali - Tuesday, April 08, 2008 4:50 PM
Today it's guns, tomorrows it's T.O. or Brett Favre. If you buy the game and the guns what's to stop EA from charging for superstars in Madden or charging for Golf balls or clubs in Tiger?

If yall want to see what a real post is check this out http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/bl og/post/684579/Bad_Company_Get s_Ship_Date.html

This will explain what EA is doing and why the Boycott is pointless. Read the 3 or 4 posts I added then come up with a reason to complain.

And if you are under 18, I don't expect you to comprehend.

You must Login or Register to post.
