Craig’s List Hoax

Posted by Frank Meyer - Monday, March 24, 2008 9:51 AM

A Jacksonville, Oregon man was the victim of a Craig’s List hoax that found him watching helplessly as stranger removed belongings from his property.

Two ads popped up Craig’s List Saturday afternoon, saying homeowner was forced to leave the area suddenly and his belongings, including a horse, were free for the taking.

But resident Robert Salisbury wasn’t planning on going anywhere except nearby Emigrant Lake when he got a call from a woman who had popped by his house to take his horse. On his way home he passed by a truckload of workers hauling off his work ladders, lawn mower and weed eater.

"I informed them I was the owner, but they refused to give the stuff back," Salisbury said. "They showed me the Craigslist printout and told me they had the right to do what they did."

By the time he got home there were about 30 people digging through his stuff, ransacking his barn and front porch.

"They honestly thought that because it appeared on the Internet it was true," Salisbury said. "It boggles the mind."

Detectives have contacted Craigslist's legal team to try to trace the ad. Salisbury has no idea who played this cruel trick on him.

Well there's a lot of idiots in Oregon to just steal stuff while no one's home and then justify it because it's on the internet. LAME.

hehe salisbury... He has a food name lol. I wish I had a food name.

The internet is ALWAYS true duh. I, mean, usually.

Well, some of the time anyway.

Okay, a couple times it was true...

Right?

I doubt they thought that it was legal to do what they did. I guarantee they did it because they knew they could get away with it. Just like when people start going crazy in riots. They probably figured it was legit at first, but by the time the guy got home and said to stop, there were too many people to do anything.

Personally I'd shoot someone at that point. He owned the land, right? I'd go all 'Falling Down' on somebody's ass.

^^ Agreed, I wouldn't even ask what they are doing. I would of went on a shooting spree. They wouldn't get too far with my property.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the people taking his stuff were the same ones who posted it on Craigslist. I could just hear their mental capacities in full force:

D-bag 1: "What if I told you that we could steal a bunch of crap and get away with it if we got caught?"

D-bag 2: "No way, really?"

D-bag 1: "Heck yes, we just put an ad on craigslist saying that the stuff is free!!"

D-bag 2: "Sweet, I'm in"

D-bag 2: "I call the horse!!"

Wow, there ARE a lot of stupid people in Oregon. I should know, I live there. And once someone tells you they can take your stuff, why wouldn't you grab a butcher's knife and cut his eye's out? I would! Apparrently, when something is on a peice of land it's up for grabs at some stranger's say so...

I wonder how much the black market would pay for a kidney...
