Internet Addiction May be Classified as Mental Illness

Posted by Ty Colfax - Tuesday, March 18, 2008 11:54 AM

An editorial piece in the March issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry says compulsive internet use which can include "excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations and e-mail/text messaging" should be classified as a mental illness, under the parameters of addiction.

Similar to addicts of other behaviors or substances, users experience cravings, withdrawal, and tolerance which only lead to more of a dependence on the activity and increased hours on the interwebs. Some users even neglect basic human needs like eating or sleeping.

Dr. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland says about 86% of internet addicts have some other additional mental illness but unless a psychiatrist is looking for it, they could easily miss the internet component.

British psychiatrists said last year that a mere 5-10% of internet users are addicts but China and South Korea are already addressing the problem after 10 people died in internet cafés in South Korea from cardiopulmonary-related deaths. It's reported that 7 of them died due to online gaming and the South Korean officials have since trained more than 1,000 counselors in the treatment of internet addiction.

Guess I'm one of the currently 70.7% who can't survive without the net. At the same time though, I ain't no addict...

So is stupidity a mental illness too? Is being a schmuk an illness? Because those tend to be the biggest reasons I see for excessive gaming and internet use.

can I get disability for being addicted, no wait that would only give me more time to be on the web

Listen ,ANYTHING can become an addiction. It just lies in the person's ability to control themselves.

You know you have true self control if you can abstain from doing your favorite thing and find something else to do in the meanwhile.

The medical world just wants more cash from meds is all......

Being a prick is an addiction. I've noticed that if someone is a prick once they can't stop and must be prickish over and over again. And when they stop they get prick withdrawl and come back at you with full force.

Hmmmm. Lets see about this. Does the internet make you happy? Does it help you escape reality for a brief time? Sounds like something that you can be addicted to. So I guess you would have to also ask are you easily addicted. Don't forget denial is also a sign of addiction. Also the fact that every person has every type of pesonality trait to some degree. So that also means that every body is psychotic and stupid to some degree. Just some more than others.

@ dillybar

Yes, being an effing idiot does cause people to focus on worthless endeavours like surfing endless hours youtube videos instead going to work or spending time with real life people. Stupidity also causes people to ask stupid questions.

To choose this or that is to affirm at the same time the value of what we choose, because we can never choose evil. We always choose the good, and nothing can be good for us without being good for all.

Your reasoning really astounds me. I just love how you infer that to waste time on the internet you must be stupid..not bored or anything.

By your reasoning all those people that never leave WoW to talk to people in real life are stupid...not that they have some social disorders or anything.

I guess by your standards stupidity causes alcoholics to drink to much and drug addicts to do drugs.

Posted by fanboy07 - Tuesday, March 18, 2008 5:03 PM

wow hahahahah LOL

Posted by IdreamofMunn - Tuesday, March 18, 2008 5:35 PM

Inappropriate altizar, we all have that problem. But srsly, yes you can be addicted to teh internets(I'm a WoW fiend) because addiction is not neccesarily a physiological disease it is also a mental one; however declaring it a mental disorder is a ploy to sell more meds as Mr. Pereria said so if your an internet addict go do drugs so you can at least be addicted to something tangible

Posted by Spartan3970 - Tuesday, March 18, 2008 6:37 PM

People go on the internet for various reasons from intertainment 2 work so just because people r on the internet alot doesnt me addiction. Those who r addicted 2 the internet r those who already have some sort of problem such as depretion.

Posted by SonicNiGHT - Tuesday, March 18, 2008 9:54 PM

Is being addicted to studying and analyzing stupid things an addiction?

Like how we spent $10 million trying to figure out why depressed people try to commit suicide.

Swear to God.

Posted by Litestorm17 - Wednesday, March 19, 2008 7:04 AM

Seriously, this is ridiculous. I can see an addiction, maybe...but a mental illness? I think not. Yeah, I am on the internet a lot, but I'm not an addict. I can stop if I want to. I have dial-up, so its not like I would be missing much anyway.

Posted by Madbagofhorses - Wednesday, March 19, 2008 7:19 AM

Anyone else see the irony in sending internet addicts to an internet site to get help?

Posted by WVUrook - Wednesday, March 19, 2008 9:28 AM

@ dillybar

Yes, stupidity is one of the main underlying causes of addiction. I know heroin feels good, but I know it is addictive, so therefore I would be stupid to try it. Drinking excessively is stupid. I drink, and like to "get stupid" with my friends; but I know if I drink too much I will become an alcoholic. Which would be a stupid thing to do.

Yes, genetics can give a person a predisposition to dependency, but it doesn't excuse them from responsibility for their own actions. Stupid is as stupid, and there is a lot of stupidity in the world.

Posted by WVUrook - Wednesday, March 19, 2008 9:29 AM

*Stupid is as stupid DOES

Drugs may cause a physical dependence, but that doesn't change the fact that you were an effing idiot for doing them in the firts place.
