'Army of Two' Won't Play Across Regions

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 1:55 PM

According to Electronic Arts, Army of Two won't allow players in North America to team up with U.K or Asian gamers.

We wanted to get to the bottom of this issue, so we called Army of Two Senior Producer Reed Schneider.

"The game works on a deterministic or peer-to-peer network setting," Reed explained. "Because we have all these synchronized animations and the players are always doing things together, the only way to support that kind of model right now is to use a deterministic model for networking."

"If you're playing with someone in co-op, generally you're playing with a friend, so it's not so much of a problem to have a non-region locked game, but the problem comes when you go into vs. mode.  Unlike client server, in a peer-to-peer or deterministic model, the person with the worst connection brings everyone else down to their level. So you could have three people playing with a good connection and one person with a bad connection in another continent, and everyone is brought down to his level."

Before you start flaming, console fans, Schneider told us it has nothing to do with PS3 or 360's capabilities.

"The platform doesn't make a difference. It's platform agnostic," Schneider said.

Another reason for the region lock: Content. "Asia has different rules for what you can do in shooters than North America or Europe. For example You can't shoot dead bodies in Asia," Schneider said. "You can't have a peer-to-peer model where one person can shoot bodies and the other can't because ultimately the game's simulations diverge."

As for the future, Reed said, "We're looking at potentially going away from a region locked setting, but it's research right now."

We get it, but we're still very unhappy we can't play Army of Two with G4tv.co.uk correspondent Malcolm Ballyweather.

meh the game isn't that fun stick with COD4

Posted by vole182 - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:20 PM

err hold on I mean GOOD! No one wants to play with people not part of the US anyway. That's disgusting!!

Posted by hetman - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:28 PM

@vole182 have you played it? And why compare it with COD4 it is a 3rd person shooter not 1st. I would compare it to Gears of War. I have not played it but I would really like to. So I would like some honest opinion about the game.

I have played it and it is really fun. But I have only played it CO-OP mode. I have no interest in doing the single player campaign. I would classify it as a rental. It is really fun when you have to run into enemies firing at you to grab your buddy and drag him back to safety to heal him. There are tons of customizable weapons. The game is pretty short though.

Posted by vole182 - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:51 PM

Sure, i'll give you a real honest opinion about the game...
here ya go

ITS TRASH

Presentation I give it a 5
booooo these men!

Graphics - I give it a 9.2 cause its sexy looking

Sound 6.5 a little rough sometimes

Gameplay- no help and can catch on object when you don't want to.

3.0 Lasting Appeal- I played it for a weekend!

GG save your money for gears 2

and I made the COD4 comment cause that game is amazing in the replay value!

Their are two different games though. I love COD4 I play it everynight. But it would be nice to play a different game. I would rent the game but gamefly sux and will never send me a game until it is 2 years old. Unless it is dead rising and then they will never send it to you because they are asses. Anyways it looks fun to me I doubt the single player would be fun but the co-op looks like a blast.

Posted by vole182 - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 3:08 PM

yeah I could see what you mean,
but seriously rent, dont buy it. Play it for a weekend and take it on back.

Besides you want to have a real blast with your buddy!

smash brothers is in the wii section :)

I agree with ssbb and im looking super forward to mariokart. But like I said I hate renting games and having a gamefly account it seems so wasteful. Im definatly going to play and or rent before I buy. You are a fool if you do not.

Well, most of my Xbox Live friends are in the UK because I work the grave yard shift and when I'm home in the morning thats when most of them are on. So, basically as much as I wanted to get this game- it's out for me.

@hetman
again its nice to see some people on the feed that aren't complete wangs :)

You guys need to calm down, lol.

First off, the game is basically EA's answer to Gears, minus the Locust, and with Customizable weapons. The game isn't supposed to be realistic, it's supposed to be as though every enemy was actually another gamer, that's why they screw around, and they're pretty smart when they need to be.

The online play was somewhat of a letdown, considering you can only have 4 people in the same room, but you can fight off tons of AI while fighting against your 2 opponents which makes up for the lack of players.

The game is riddled with glitches, opportunities to cash farm, and just plain retarded moments, but overall, it's pretty fun, but it's also challenging. Definitely a "rent before you buy it" kinda game.

There is tons of DLC for it on the way, btw.

Btw Hetman, there's a new MarioKart in most American arcades. Might help you ease the pain and the weight in your pocket while we wait for the next one lol. It's pretty good.

Come to think of it, I'm actually very surprised that there's no demo of the game...it's almost like it's praying for a demo because noone knows whether to buy it or not. Come on EA, listen to the gamers :\

I know that it has nothing to do with Ps3 or the 360, Steve Johnson. I really thought though that this studio would not do something EA like and foul some of what they did up...I expected alot more from the game anyway but you know...I just traded in the game for a WoW game card. Had finished everything on it and cried over the versus mode.

Do you think shooting a dead body in Asia is a bigger crime than shooting a live one?

Posted by hetman - Wednesday, March 12, 2008 7:04 AM

@sonicnight. I have played it. It is fun. Yea im definatly going to need to play army of two before I buy it.

I didn't like it from the Jump...I like Single player games and the single player was virtualy non existant. The Story had a good concept but that too was a let down, it's loaded with unnecessary cut sceens and the cuts sceens for the story were way tooo short to actualy build a story(the comic that came w/the game had more story in 1 chapter). The training mode in the beguning was soooooo boring. It's got a lot of good aspects though...like customisable wepons, the pulling your injured teammate and even the boards....but all in all exectuion was horrible which made the game suck MONKEY BALLS!!
