iPods are great, but for the past several years we’ve all faced the problem of getting our music to play through our car stereos. The best solution is to snag a stereo with iPod integration or an AUX port, but if that isn’t an option, we turn to FM transmitters.
The two cons that we gave this device aren’t its fault, but if you live in or close to a large city, your results with an FM transmitter might vary. In LA, it was tough getting a frequency that didn’t have static or feedback.
Past that, the quality can’t come close to what you’d get out of a direct connection to your iPod, but that’s to be expected. Anytime you take wires out of the equation you’re going to lose some quality, especially on an ancient technology like FM radio.
That being said, this thing is great. Not only is it shielded from the feedback that comes from the iPhone’s data connection, its transmitter is fairly powerful for such a small device. The iPhone doesn’t seem to think this device is designed for it and suggests that you enter airplane mode when connected, but don’t listen to it on this one. It works just fine while the phone & data connection are active.
As an added bonus, the cigarette lighter adapter connects to the transmitter with a standard USB port and will charge any device that gets juice over USB. This is a great feature and definitely adds to the value. The included track navigation controls on the transmitter are great so you don’t have to unlock the iPhone while driving.
If you’re looking for an FM transmitter for the iPod, go ahead and take a look at this great device from XtremeMac.
