Game-Hating Gov. Goes Bad

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, March 10, 2008 12:43 PM

Ordinarily, the moral turpitude of the people we elect to lead us doesn't warrant a mention on our website--we're too busy waiting for Mario Cart  Kart to come out--but today's political scandal warrants a mention.

According to the New York Times, New York's Democratic governor Eilot Spitzer is enmeshed in a prostitution scandal due to wiretaps that seem to show that the Guv engaged the services of a high-price call girl. He's expected to give a statement this afternoon. Why should gamers care? Because Spitzer has been an outspoken advocate of tougher, mandatory regulations on videogames. Here's what he said during his 2006 campaign for governor:

Like all parents, I know it is increasingly difficult to protect our children from negative influences… self-regulation doesn’t always work… we have learned that when self-regulation fails, government must step in… we must do more to protect our children from excessive sex and violence in the media…

Media content has gotten more graphic, more violent and more sex-based… Currently, nothing under New York State law prohibits a fourteen-year old from walking into a video store and buying… a game like ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ which rewards a player for stealing cars and beating people up. Children can even simulate having sex with a prostitute…

Perhaps if people stuck to pretending to have sex with a prostitute, they wouldn't destroy their political careers... just a thought.

@SGAanubisSG1

Hey imagine that, republican enjoying holding a public official accountable for their actions. Any interest at looking in that den of vipers called the White House. I think you might find a few lies there as well.

HA! Isn't that a surprise! Next, Jack Thompson will come out of the closet! XP

sjohnson, what exactly is a Mario Cart?

I believe that the title has it spelled 'Kart' to appeal to a younger generation.

Just a thought.

I'm from New York...if he quits we'll have our first black governor, which is awesome. But, he will be blind...which is even more awesome. It's sorta like that guy from Chappelle's Show, except he's from the north and might be governor!
If they had voted for me this wouldn't have happened...

look, all this dude is saying is that he doesn't want people PRETENDING to, say, rob, cheat, maim, steal, kill...or HAVE SEX WITH PROSTITUTES. yes, the message here is clear: do what the big kids do, put down the controller, and go hire yourself a really real prostitute. trust this guy, you'll feel better in the morning.

Welcome to our world New York......LOL!!! You see, it looks like we do in fact have things in common.......well, not in a good way, LOL!!!

Whats the point of being a governer if you cannot even get a high priced prostitute these days. It is a sad day in this world when a powerful man cannot even get laid with out having to give up his power and authority.

See know we see real bad influences in the media with lying people who are supossed to be leaders and role models for the community.

I bet he will spin it off on to video games making him do it. Everyone who blames problems on video games doesn't know history. These problems have been around way way longer than video games have been. The only reason we hear more about these common problems is because of technology and we have way more people in the world today.

Yeah, pressing the off button on the TV or not buying him him games you don't want is REALLY HARD
Thats why we spend tax-payer money and time
Bender: "Have you ever tried simply turning off the T.V, sitting down with your kid, and hitting them?"

I never said there arent corrupt republicans, there is corruption on both sides. I just think its funny how some people think it is only Republicans that are against video games even though for the vast majority that is not the case. Democrats are for big government and control, having there hands over everything. Republicans are for small government, low taxes, and not intruding on the rights of the people and any person that calls them self a republican and breaks those beliefs is not a real Republican. Again im just happy to see that an anti video game democrat is getting in trouble.

Thank you -yoshiarecool- for the 'Bender Bending Rodrigez' reference

Regaurdless of political parties, those who villify video games are no better than McCarthy era facists who made up phantom communists.

On to the prostitution ring. Would any of you pay up to $5,500 an hour for a sight unseen escort? I would be to afraid of butter-faces to by a hooker from that site.

Prostitution is just aother victimless crime that should be legalized, taxed, and regulated.
