Google Hacking Gets Easier

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, February 28, 2008 10:23 AM

Hackers have been using Google for a while to try and find sensitive or private information that has been accidentally posted to websites or hidden, but still accessible by the public.

It used to be a manual task and took time to yield results.

Now, a new automated program called Goolag allows anyone to search Google for information and this has authorities and security companies spooked.

The programs authors want to "screw a large Internet search engine and make the Web a safer place." We fail to see how helping people steal credit card numbers makes the internet safer, but that's the kind of logic you get from hackers.

Experts argue that this program wouldn't do much of anything if websites were more secure. There would be nothing for the program to find if companies were better about keeping private information off of publically accessible space.

TheFeed's friendly tip is: If you put something on the internet, it's at risk of being accessed.
