Utah Wants Porn-Free ISPs

The state of Utah is tossing around the idea of passing a bill that would grant the internet equivalent of a 'G' rating to sites that would contractually obligate themselves to block pornography. "HB 407, introduced by Rep. Michael Morley (R), would designate some ISPs as "Community Conscious Internet Providers" if they meet certain criteria. In order to be certified as a CCIP by the Attorney General's office, an ISP would prohibit its customers by contract from posting pornography or other material that's harmful to minors. Customers of the G-rated ISP would also be prevented from reaching what the bill refers to as "prohibited material."

The problem is that, as a part of this, the ISPs would be able to keep the IP addresses of their users for up to two years from when they were first obtained, which means, essentially, that Utah is watching what the people of their state are doing online, and they don't like it.
