House Passes College P2P Bill

Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, February 13, 2008 11:09 AM

The House of Representatives has passed the College Opportunity and Affordability Act, which could change some things for you young whippersnappers, but includes a provision to try and combat peer-to-peer file sharing.

The Act calls for colleges to provide a legal alternative to P2P, presumably in something like Napster or Rhapsody, and put a plan in place for network filtering.

In the true spirit of our government, the Act both makes having a filtering plan a requirement, but supposedly does nothing to punish schools that don't come up with one, though some critics believe they will lose funding.

Call your Senators and tell them that this isn't cool. If you're not sure how government works, go download season 1 of The West Wing. We won't tell anyone.

How do you feel about this? Do you go to college? Would you still go to college if you couldn't download music on that sweet, super-fast college connection?

It will never hold longer than a month till people figure out how to get around it.Then it will take 3 yrs for govt to catch up.

I heard about this about 2 weeks ago on another podcast. It's so bogus, poorly written and vague. I hate this crap. People who know nothing of the internets making laws to dictate the actions of many.

nothing like a little facism to brighten up the college campuses.

How the hell will they enforce this without making themselves (our goverment) look communist?

If the Act does not call for any punishment then there is no legality to it. No one will have to follow it until a punishment has set forth... GO LAW SCHOOL!!!

I'd just get my own internet access if I were in that situation and needed to P2P that bad. DSL or cable is only $25 - $30 bucks a month, and that's a whole lot less than most college kids spend on weed in the same period...

My school already has RIAA sniffers built into the network, and we get quite a few DMCA violations every day, and I'm assuming the people that get them just dont' know about them. And there is a way around them by using ruckus, and downloading another program to remove the DRM from the music you download off of ruckus. Personally I don't download anything on campus, because if i get caught I would get fired from my wonderful help desk job, in which i get to talk to retarded users all day long :o)

I go to UVM (University of Vermont) and seeding is simply impossible, but that doesn't stop me from downloading through P2P or other file sharing networks. The music industry needs to evolve better and stop blaming me for their lack of understanding when in reference to their customer base.

Well as happy as I am to see tards who pirate get laws put in place. I also know that this won't last 2 weeks before there are a million ways around it.

seriously, I'd rather sell my ipod than have to pay for music and videos.
