Why Do Wii Games Get Low Review Scores?

Next-Gen.biz decided to examine the incredibly low average review score for Wii games versus the PS3 and Xbox 360 and find that reviewers are either being very harsh on the Wii or the games just aren't that good.

Here's a fun graph they whipped up:

Using the average score from GameRankings.com, they also conclude that the PS3 has better reviewed games than the Xbox 360.

well c'mon the wii gets all the gimmicky games that noone wants. we all kid around about cooking mama, but really, gamers dont go for that, and even if they do, the end result for reviewers isnt good. the wii's quality titles get insane reviews, like Zelda and Mario, and most recently smash bros, but with all the gimmicky games, mostly with a bunch of craptastic mini-games, the wii's getting held down in score overall.

All the Wii needs is an M rated version of The Legend of Zelda. That game would kick ass so much, just look at Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Of course the parents and Nintendo would get their panties in a bunch and say helll no.

Xbox 360 has tons of shovelware, I know "Xbots" like to gloat they have 270 game library vs PS3's 120 game library, but 150 of the Xbox 360 games are rated lower than 70% on Metacritic, hence the Shovelware.

Don't get me wrong 360 has some good games like Bioshock, and Mass Effect but they also let lots of 3rd party studios develop shovelware games like every single iteration of Harry Potter, Dora, Hillary Duff, Spong Bob and Bratz games.

while i am a PS3 fanboy, i do like to play fair. ps3 has fewer titles so thats why their percentage is higher. Wii, on the otherhand, seems as though Nintendo has given up on its old policy to have all games go through them before being released. Its not that the wii doesnt have alot of good games but it has so many bad exclusives that it is weighing the percentage down more than considerably.

I do have to ask if this include VC XBLA and PSN games though, if not then the wii's percentage could go up.

P.S., while i am a PS3 fanboy i do not hate the 360 but mearly the business methods of its creator

The graph is also stretched out vertically. It makes the Wii games look like they have HALF the ratings of the PS3 games, but the scale says that the Wii games are only 9 points below the PS3 games. Is that really all that much on a 100 point scale?

On another note, Videogame raters have to play through the entire game in a small amount of time. Lair is a great game but it is not designed to be played for long periods of time.

I challenge X-play to re-rate every two-starred game because alot of people had problems with Lair and Timeshift getting a 2 out of 5 and they were really good games.

Let's look at profitability and cost to develop. PS3 games take the longest anfd cost the most to make, so shovelware just isn't as likly to happen as it is on the cash machine that currently is the Wii. Honestly, the Wii's popularity really hurts it's game quality more than helps it, at least right now it does.

Anyone who thinks L.A.I.R sucks, needs to learn how to use a Fking controller, the controls though complex, can be learned given time, and its a fun game with awesome ass missions, and it was beautifully crafted for a first year release.

Obviously you guys haven't read the latest edition of Game Informer because if you had you see the article called "20 Wii games to play this year". Don't get me wrong I love playing FPS and all but it seems to me that's all Sony and Microsoft comes out with and it just gets boring after awhile. At least Nintendo has a variety of different genres to choose from and for those who sit there and say "Nintendo only comes out with mini games!" Why don't you actually try playing the system before you judge it. I've played the 360 and personally I don't want to buy something I'm going to have to return due to malfunctions. As far as ps3 goes, I'm not going to buy a revamped ps2 because that's basically all it is!

Okay hold it. If somebody thinks Sony's games are the best reviewed out there, somebody has been sniffing something illegal. The 360 has had multiple perfect games that have scored a 10/10 and many 9's. Nuff said.

sorry deathsdelivery, Lair sucked. I got it free with my PS3 and felt that it wasn't worth what I paid for it (thats right, it's not worth $0.00)
I know how to use a controller and I got the controls, they were just set up stupidly. The gameplay itself wasn't anything special, though I did like landing and burning/eating enemiesm everything else was just mediocre.

As far as ps3 goes, I'm not going to buy a revamped ps2 because that's basically all it is-

Ahhh but you WILL buy a revamped Gamecube with motion controls and more bad titles than good.

BTW- I own a launch Wii and other next gen console. Pretty much use the Wii for playing games with the wife and 4 year old. 2 years from now those other systems are going to make the Wii look like you're playing Intellivision( with motion controls)

PS3 has better reviews because it has fewer games, but good developers (Insomniac) working on it. 360 probably has the largest game library and thus will pick up some bad titles (Hour of Victory) as well as good ones (Gears of War). The problem with the Wii is that very few developers are actually being innovative with it (minigames, minigames, minigames, etc.) thought the system itself screams "innovation" and "originality".

Why the hell are people talking about Lair? Getting a bit off topic are we not?

Its all true stuff, Gameranking.com is Cnet owned ranking site that consists of Metacritic.

PS3 has about as much good games as shovelware, however if you look at the ranking Xbox 360 has over 150 shovelware titles, almost twice their good games.

your explanation is partly refuted by the article source page 2 3rd graph.

The graph shows Xbox 360 in year 1 of its life the scores start dropping, while PS3 in year 1 scores start increasing.
You may said that PS3 has a smaller library, but remember Xbox 360 did have around 140 games in year 1, just like PS3 has around 140 titles out right now.

Well, maybe its because Nintendo releases a crap-load of crappy titles. Seriously, the best games I managed to get were Zelda, COD3, Super Mario Galaxy and of course Wii Sports and a few classic titles. Besides that, there hasnt been anything to look forward to besides Brawl. I would say 90% of the games that Nintendo has released for the Wii were just for the 'CASUAL' gamer and would only attract the 'CASUAL' gamer. Well Nintendo, as I have been telling you, the 'CASUAL' gamer SUCKS GIANT DICKCHENNEY. They become interested in something like the Wii and once the fun leaves them they forget about it and go pick up something stupid like a PSP and pretend to act suprised when they figure out how to play it. THEY ARE SO GOD DAMN STUPID, STOP GIVING THEM ALL OF THE GAMES, DAMN IT!!!

The PS3 having fewer games isn't a way of cheating on this graph... They've had fewer games but, on average, better games. If Microsoft didn't make so many weak or average games they would have been higher. Because even an endless supply of 3's is only an endless supply of 3's...

My opinion

360 has been out longer, therefore having more games, therefore having a higher percentage of crappy games

wii is casual based, most reviewers are nit picky hardcore gamers,

ps3 is stupid and ugly so the reviewers feel sorry for its games, plus the majority of its high scoring games are multiplatform and those games are typically well received.

That was amazing everyone... I actually only heard one ODDBALL acting like the 360 was better than the Ps3, funny thing is, there is more room for the ps3 and a whole helluva lot more games coming for it, let alone more developers are starting to like it!!!, sounds familliar... ps2 vs. xbox, anyone?

ps2 vs xbox was rough. even though you had better graphics on the xbox, you still had the same disc space. which meant since the ps2 had crappier graphics you could fit more info on a disc, thus making bigger games. :D

This is because Nintendo, along with good games, allows twice as much other games onto their platform that are crappy. Just search for all the crappy titles for the Wii that many people havn't even heard of and you'll understand.

Average scores really only tell part of the story.

I don't buy "average" games, I buy games that get a good review so the real test is how many games get a 80% or higher on Gamerankings.com or Metacritic.com . That tells you how many good games there are for a particular console.

Any guesses who wins that contest?

Are the majority of low scored games from smaller publishers?

If so, then of course they would be on the Wii.

The game deving lanscape now is:
If you can't make a 1080p game, don't come to the PS3.
If you can't make a 720p game, don't come to the 360.

So that just leaves the Wii.

Personally, I'm glad smaller publishers are finding a home somewhere. I just can't see the industry sustaining itself forever on AAA titles; where you spend $150 mill to make $100 mill.

but its only a year old
its limits and capabilities haven't been fully discovered
in another year or so a lot more high quality games should be hitting the market

Mooo. It's more along the lines that the Wii had an over abundance of Mini-game games that didn't do so hot after Raving Rabbits. And, on top of that... isn't the Wii the only system of the tree that has a substantial amount of budget titles?

I only half agree with you. You are 100% correct in saying all the 360 is FPS titles: Halo,Gears, Bioshock, and sorta Mass Effect. But to say the PS3 only has FPS titles is, well, idiotic. God of War, Heavenly Sword, Final Fantasy, Motorstorm, Gran Turismo..Sure PS3 has alotta FPS titles, but they also have good non FPS titles.

As to why the good to crap ratio for PS3 is 1:1 because Sony favors quality over quantity...

Seriosly, it doesn't take a scientist to answer this one:
1) The Wii has a huge amount of games, however most game are made from 3rd party developers that don't do a good job in development. The amount of good quality games on the wii is just scary low.

2) PS3 has a high score cause, well most of their games are pretty high standard. Wait a sec, i think i heard a cricket... oh yea even though, the amount of those 9+ score games just surpasses the Wii's, while most are around 7. Not to mention, the popularity of these games and console is redicously low.

3) The 360 gets the middle man. In 2007, the amount of games that got high reviews just busted the roof. Yet of course, the amount of low quality games in the xbox seems just about equal.

Summary, when we count the games that got 8.5 or above, (on average) 360 gets first place (look up yourself lazies). But when we compare all games of a system, the number gets changed drastically that drops all the system's scores.

the wii has more shovelware that you can ignore.get the good games forget and the others like time does.Zelda,galaxy , metroid ,no more heroes are fine games to enjoy and the virtual console and gamecube give lots of other options .i'm going to play Tales of Synphonia to prepare for the wii sequel. a game is good even if its old . and if a few older games abdicate the ones i mentioned are not enough GET A LIFE!

just some statistics for ya, just because the 360 has been out longer doesn't mean that time has anything to do with the "proportion" of high-low rated games. Also I agree with "whoever said it...it was way earlier in the comments" that why should we care about the amount of bad titles...if I know a crappy game is coming out, I don't give it a second thought. IT IS THE GOOD GAMES that matter...this is where time becomes a factor. The PS3 has a better proprtion of good to bad games (although as stated numerous times, the graph is quite deceiving)but the number of titles coming out for all systems (statistics I don't know) would shed light on who has THE MOST highly rated games. I am sure it is the 360 right now...but YAY for competition.

ps...I own a 360..."might" buy a PS3, wii not for me but to each his own.

HAHAHA you are seriously dumb. i didnt realize 1080p, 60gb hard drive, wifi, wireless controllers, and a blu ray drive would be classified as a revamp. So what do you call the 360? im so tired of you 360 fanboys. just go trade in your console for a ps3 already while you can still get some cash for it. before M$ forces you to buy a new console.

Well I think Nintendo went down hill when they removed "Quality" from the "Seal of Quality". I'm pretty sure that was there message to game developers that they would take any piece of code that runs on a Wii. Don't get me a wrong, a good drunk Wii Sports or Wii Play is still a great time, but do note the "drunk".

Of course multi-platform games look the same thats the developers call why would those cheap bastards ( EA ) spend time to maximize the gamer experience they don't there name sells titles alone EA has release for the next 3 years already all 30+ titles.Only exclusives will max potential because A. there fight for a piece of the pie

Most of the people have it right. The Wii is heavily aimed at children. The problem with that is two-fold. Children aren't as likely to rate their games online (we don't even know if they really like them), and the average gamer is in their mid to late twenties (if I remember correctly). All in all, the system has only had a few titles that we have all loved and a whole LOT of crap no one cares about. If you keep pumping that mess into the market your average game score will take a nosedive. They must think that they can make up for a small number of good games with a whole lot of terrible ones and they're wrong.

The 360 and P3S get all the awesome multiplayers and have a lot more awesome exclusives. I really hope Nintendo steps it up.

I only half agree with you. You are 100% correct in saying all the 360 is FPS titles: Halo,Gears, Bioshock, and sorta Mass Effect. But to say the PS3 only has FPS titles is, well, idiotic. God of War, Heavenly Sword, Final Fantasy, Motorstorm, Gran Turismo..Sure PS3 has alotta FPS titles, but they also have good non FPS titles.

As to why the good to crap ratio for PS3 is 1:1 because Sony favors quality over quantity...

I stand corrected. But my point of the ps3 being a revamped version of the ps2 remains the same.

ps2 plays dvds/ps3 plays blu-ray
ps2 plays cds/ps3 plays cds
ps2 has playstation network/ps3 has playstation network

Nothing has really changed. Besides why would I spend 600 smackers on a ps3 when I can buy a pc that's way better than all three consoles?

I did forget to mention in my earlier post about the 1080p (whatever the hell that is) and the 60 gig harddrive. I don't give a damn about how much gigabytes there are in a hard drive all I care about is having fun playing video games. Don't need blu-ray because I have an HD-DVD player (which is better than blu-gay) don't need something that plays music (anyone ever heard of a stereo, those things work wonders.)I simply refuse to spend anywhere from 400-600 dollars on a system especially when you're going to walk out of the store spending more than that because you're going to want a game, memory, card, and a second controller.

1st that graph is completely distorted. The numbers really are VERY close. The thing is all systems have stregnths and weaknesses. the Wii has and always will platform to a more family friendly environment. This doesn't mean that a game system sucks because they don't support blood gore and nudity. It's nintendo's way of doing things. As far as the 360. I think it's decent they are coming out with more RPGs than any other system. Which isn't their "norm".On PS3 heavenly sword was beautiful to look at, but it took me all of 12 hours to beat the game. To me it was a HUGE let down, but it's one i choose for the graphics. Ultimately it comes down to what type of games do you like.From someone who owns all the systems Who cares what the "polls" say anyway. If you aren't playing for your own enjoyment....then why play at all?

i am SO sorry 2 any1 who has a PS3!!! my HardcoreGamer Advice: sell ur PS3 if u have 1 and get a WII! PS2 is WAY better than PS3! it can play PS3 games for G-d's sake! PS3 has NO good games! It's pretty obvious, the third party companies aren't trying hard enough. Many third party Wii games are poorly structured pieces of crap that look like first generation Ps2 games with even worse Wii mote controls slapped on. There seems to be a beacon of hope as developers like High Voltage are attempting to bring out the Wii's potential but, right now, third party looks cloudy on the Wii. Damn lazy third party companies...
