Sessler Talks 'Mass Effect Vs. FOX News'

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Monday, January 28, 2008 9:44 AM

Last week, X-Play's Adam Sessler twice addressed the recent controversy with BioWare's space RPG Mass Effect. First, in Sessler's Soapbox, Adam discussed the series of online ravings by a conservative blogger who had never played the game. Then, on Friday, Adam turned his attention to the recent FOX News segment on the game, which incorrectly reported that Mass Effect featured full graphic nudity and sex. Check out the two videos and then let us know where you stand on this issue.

I think its dumb on behalf of fox, because the game recieved a Mature Rating, which means no one under 17 should be playing this game. I think it recieved the rating it deserved, and if they want to complain about children seeing this, then they should go after the stores selling it to underage kids ... that being said, I have seen alot worse on Family Guy, and American Dad, which I watch on FOX. So the person resposible for this review of the game should be under fire from everyone including FOX, I just dont think we should be focusing on FOX, but instead the ignorant person working for them.

Question: What's he referring to in the last part on his soapbox segment? The part about a "big tent (???) thing that was promised 7 years ago".

Anyway, I fully agree. I was super steamed at both of them, but Sessler handled this better than I ever could.

Just two words on behalf of Sessler's awesomeness.

BOOM headshot.

Argama,

'Question: What's he referring to in the last part on his soapbox segment? The part about a "big tent (???) thing that was promised 7 years ago".'

Answer: 'The Rev. Jerry Falwell said yesterday that evangelical Christians, after nearly 25 years of increasing political activism, now control the Republican Party and the fate of President Bush in the November election.

"The Republican Party does not have the head count to elect a president without the support of religious conservatives," Falwell said at an election training conference of the Christian Coalition.

Falwell said evangelical Christians are now "by far the largest constituency" within the Republican Party, their route to dominance beginning in 1979 with his founding of the Moral Majority, a precursor to the Christian Coalition."

Sessler is completely correct that Mass Effect should not have been attacked. Mass Effect is one of the best games to ever been made and for people to accuse it to be bad for people and "children" is wrong. First it is rated M. Second the guest during the interview on Fox, only one had actually played the game and he liked it. Fox really dropped a bomb on this one, they should have done some investigation before going off on what they heard Mass Effect was like.

"I tell my Republican friends who are always talking about the 'big tent,' I say make it as big as you want to, but if the candidate running for president is not pro-life, pro-family . . . you're not going to win," he said.

"Big tent" was coined by the late Lee Atwater as chairman of the Republican National Committee after the 1988 presidential election to summarize his view that the party should expand beyond its conservative base to include moderates.'"

I love the second video, aw hell, I loved both of them, because Sessler is just freaking right.
Pwn on, Sessler, pwn on.

Fox news = Owned

Adam Sessler = Owner

Posted by Narocue - Monday, January 28, 2008 1:45 PM
FOX NEWS WAS NOT IN THE WRONG ... THE STUPID ANALYST WAS AN IDIOT, MARK THE BLAME TO HIM. This was his opinion, on a show that is based on Opinion. Would you blame g4 if Adam Sessler said dont play Halo its a crappy game that has a marine soldier of the future a$$ raping aliens. STFU

Posted by yoshiarecool - Monday, January 28, 2008 2:03 PM
The first person was vieying for attention for attention, and thank god he got the terrible attention.
The woman was just a retarted bigot using 40 secs of video to kill time. The best part about it is that her and her associate flat out say they never played it which means no one can logically support her or back her up.
E.G both should jump in a ditch and die. I'll be throwing copies of Mass effect on their grave when they do

Posted by godless15 - Monday, January 28, 2008 2:27 PM
oh snap! nice one Sessler...

I dont even have a 360 and I'm a hardcore Sony fanboy, but i got to admet that i wish that mass effect was on the PS3 and if not... it might just make me get a 360 for it.

Great video. This shows how dumb fox news has become. They hate the fact that they are losing their people to cnn and other news shows because, the younyer people are walking away from them due to this stuff. I would watch cnn for two hours than I would watch fox news.

Posted by JDarkley - Monday, January 28, 2008 3:25 PM
@Narocue, it is Fox's fault if they don't let Geoff Keighley get near the same speaking time as Cooper Lawrence. It's also Fox's fault for letting Cooper Lawrence and her ignorant a$$ on the show.

Posted by Narocue - Monday, January 28, 2008 3:30 PM
I agree with you there, someone should get fired over this crap.

Posted by deafweasel436 - Monday, January 28, 2008 3:53 PM
once again, Sessler kicks some sorry video game hating ass.

GO SESS!

Posted by Thundrone - Monday, January 28, 2008 4:14 PM
Adam "Liberal" Sessler

Keep your Liberalism to your self Sessler.
Oh and what about Hillary Clinton (D) and Joe Lieberman (D), and the Family Entertainment Protection Act. What about that Sessler?

Just stick to reviewing games, Oh ,you don't do that anymore. Do you!! You just bash fox news. If you care so much why don't you go on fox news then.

Posted by kleindropper - Monday, January 28, 2008 4:15 PM
Sessler is projecting his personal hatred for FoxNews into this rant. FNC was fairly unbiased in their handling of the discussion.
Some of the items at issue:
- There is full nudity in the cutscene. Don't get this confused with "full frontal nudity"
- Yes they are having sex. Obviously its not as bad as an episode of Melrose Place but its there
- Almost all of the statements made by the much maligned "expert" regarded generic video game studies and their effect on children. She did not need to have any knowledge of Mass Effect itself to do this

Posted by kleindropper - Monday, January 28, 2008 4:16 PM
Cont..
- The Fox News host herself said from her research she found "nothing graphic" and was "amazed" by the artistry of the game - not exactly a siren call for a new Inquisition
- Jeff was given more than equal time to make his case, contrary to Sessler's assertion
- Did Mass Effect target children with their advertising? I cannot answer this without more research.. Generally speaking, liberals like Sessler who successfully destroy freedoms using the "targeting children" tactic can thank themselves for other special interest groups using the same tactic against their sacred cows.

The best part of all this is the FoxNews game review: 'Mass Effect' One of Best Sci-Fi Games Ever 3.5 out of 4 stars

Posted by JDarkley - Monday, January 28, 2008 4:29 PM
Look out guys! kleindropper is a conservative tool who actually thinks Fox is unbiased!

Really, everything you just said has already been said, except for the las bit...
What the hell do you mean by "sacred cows?" (And I know it's a Bible reference.)

Posted by Carpeljet - Monday, January 28, 2008 5:14 PM
i think we need 5 or 6 more stories about this so all the close minded people on both sides can stroke their egos and proclaim "I"M RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG".

Posted by OMGaGirlGamer - Monday, January 28, 2008 6:00 PM
The thing to note about the segment on Fox News was that there was not a panel of half being against and half being neutral. Only Jeff represented the side protecting the game. He should not have been the only pro-game voice if it were truly an unbiased discussion on the game.

All of the people against the game had not played it. If they had at least spent 15 mins playing the game and then spoke out against it, there would not have been such a huge backlash from the gaming community.

Research is, "To study (something) thoroughly so as to present in a detailed, accurate manner." That being the definition, to throughly discuss and disect a topic, you must have first hand knowledge and not "heresay." Just going to the game's website is not enough.

Posted by OMGaGirlGamer - Monday, January 28, 2008 6:02 PM
Kleidropper, Jeff was constantly interrupted by the host and expert as he tried to defend his position. He was not given equal time or respect in the matter.

Posted by nintendopwnsallbitch - Monday, January 28, 2008 6:04 PM
fox news= pure biased propaganda that locks out ligitamate voices of dissent. and if they say that i am misinformed than im just as bad as they are.
besides the sex scenes only just as graphic as that sex scene in the terminater

Posted by StreetNinjaPuff - Monday, January 28, 2008 7:24 PM
Bravo Bravo you should invite fox news to the show and then not give them equal time to be stupid and biased

Posted by kleindropper - Monday, January 28, 2008 7:45 PM
I'm wondering if you people even watched the segement in question?

Yes, interuptions are normal in a 5 minute segment - I actually thought the host was leaning towards Geoff's(sic?) side believe it or not.

According to my YouTube clock, Geoff was allowed to speak for approx. 53 secs vs. 63 seconds for Cooper.

And as for the "panel's" summation: Don't censor; it's up to the parents to keep it out of kid's hands. Not exactly the "bashing" being portrayed.

Posted by RyannWeller - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 7:36 AM
Right on the freaking head Sessler!

I personally plan on going into video games and I always found these politicians that ride the video game train to be unintelligent and grossly misinformed. Especially to date where the average age of a gamer is actually late 20's, early 30's, I don't see where attacking video games is going to get you anywhere. Add on top of that just spewing rhetoric that shows you have never even picked up a controller in your life...well, I just look forward to someday getting a president in office that knows how to kick ass in Halo.

Thanks for the rant there Sessler...you nailed what all of us gamers have wanted to say as a whole!

Posted by OMGaGirlGamer - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 7:39 AM
I did watch the segment. And the host was not siding with Geoff. We both have our perceptions of the bias.

And for the panel...it is a Mature rated game and has the M on the front of the box. One of the panelists said she had to look for it. How? It's right in front of your eyes.

If a parent did not know about this game, they would think it is filled with virtual debauchery. "Luke Skywalker meets Debbie Does Dallas"? The ridiculousness of the segment made me laugh. And the panel was actually talking about not having the game in the house at all because little Timmy might play it.

Posted by deline - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 10:02 AM
yup it the up to the parents to keep M game out of ther young kid's hands not any one else also thers is more things out in rl to worry about like ww3 if it happens like the terminator films or something like that.

Posted by unbiasedplayer0_0 - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 10:57 AM
wait, do conservatives really watch g4? umm, g4 airs the kind of stuff that republitools ( or conservatives)profess to hate, and Adam is right 100 %. 8 years of Obama!!

Posted by Autobot_Who - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 2:38 PM
Yes, conservatives watch G4. Hi. G4 also airs stuff everybody can like. (And isn't it liberals like Clinton and Lieberman blaming video games for violence, and conservative like Rush or Robertson saying blaming games is missing the point?) Can someone link to an unedited video of the interview? I haven't played the game, so I can't comment on it.

Posted by kleindropper - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 3:58 PM
Last time I checked, it was a Democrat (New Mexico) who wanted to put a tax on video games and TVs because "the children" don't get enough excercise. This is standard procedure for them though as they also tax drinking, smoking, fast cars and anything else that's fun.

Welcome to behavior modification, Democrat style. Soon you'll be pining for the days of "labels and ratings requests" by religious conservatives

Posted by kleindropper - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 4:05 PM
Video game tax - also coming soon to Wisconsin and perhaps nationwide if Hillary Clinton becomes president

(heartily endorsed by the liberal Sierra Club)

I think this dirty whore is just doing this because she wishes she could be naked in a video game and can't face the fact that she is an ugly whore. This chick is getting to much feedback off this whether it is bad or not. Just don't talk about her. The more televised it is the worse.

The game is amazing with or with out that 10 sex scene that showed absolutly nothing.

I also think that that "expert" has not an idea of what she is talking about

Posted by Kud400 - Thursday, February 14, 2008 5:53 PM
Alright Sessler!
first off, i like the hand grenades.
and i completely agree. some people LOOK for something to be offended about. ive seen people raise a ruckus because someone ordered a "black" coffee. as a christian, im not even the slightest bit offended by lesbian sex in a game thats rated M. simply put, we line in a country where you can do anything "and anyone" you want. and if you dont like it, sometimes you should just put up with it.

Posted by Reff93 - Wednesday, March 05, 2008 2:49 PM
Good point Sess. People should not talk about ANY video game if they don't know what the hell the story is. The game was rated M for a reason, people!

Posted by jesphoenix05 - Friday, March 07, 2008 6:30 AM
Adam is right. In the end none of those so called experts really knew what they were talking about. Both CNN and Fox News are extremely biased news casting agencies. Fox is republican and CNN is democrat. They will report however they think their parties want them to. As for the "experts" and their video game rants well when was the last time you saw an 18yr old sit and watch CNN or Fox? They would much rather be watching G4 or out in the mall or playing video games then watch some old geezer rant about stuff they don't care about. In the end the whole nonsense was just about ratings. After all they have our attention now don't they? As I parent of a 6yr old I will be responsible for what my kid does and does not watch not my government! For the record: I LOVE Mass Effect!

Posted by TrooperSomerton - Thursday, April 03, 2008 4:11 PM
In response to kleindropper, I think your way off base here. Truth be told, I am not an American, I am a Canadian (specifically a Quebecer) in fact, I am a Conservative voting Canadian ( we're a little more direct with our party names)

I watched the interview in full, in fact I went to many other sites than just youtube to track this video down to make sure i had the full story. I even played and completed Mass Effect way before this story even broke. After watching this interview it was clear that this report was indeed biased.

My main complaint was not about the nudity comments, but rather that they did not mention anything about the fact that this game ( and like many others IE Star Wars KOTOR) does not force the character to do any immoral actions. I personaly passed the game 100% in the good.

Posted by TrooperSomerton - Thursday, April 03, 2008 4:12 PM
This actualy gives you the chance to make your own choices whether to have sex, donate money or even decide whether or not to trust non humans; all of which DOES impact the game...unlike fable (no offense to Fable fans intended) To focus only on 3 minutes of a tastfull sex scene rather than the deep moral choices which can be made is a simple waist of time.

This is coming from a conservative to a republican....and that goes out to just about everyone, Gaming is a beautifully thing which brings people together ( thank you very much Xbox Live and other online services) The simple fact of the matter is that Fox news should be ashamed for having made such an amateur error in it's handling of the matter.

Well, thats my Two cents of the matter. I welcome any response.

Posted by JackBauer1005 - Monday, April 07, 2008 12:35 PM
Adam should run Fox news so people will uderstnd what a game is not like pac man (which is still awesome) also if thatbook sells it becasethe author (who knows nothing) brought the copies themselves
