Sessler's Soapbox: Mass Stupidity

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 4:25 PM

Hey, everybody! Adam's back and, this time, he's pissed off!

In this week's Sessler's Soapbox, Adam is going after the bloggers and news programs that have been attacking the game Mass Effect for it's adult situations, including sex. Where do you guys stand on this? Is Mass Effect a threat to our children?

Check out the video and let us know what you think below, or share your thoughts on our forums.

Gosh take a freaking breath and slow down please. Good point though

PREACH!

Posted by TechnoPirate - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 5:27 PM

I read this on Kotaku about the idiot who wrote the article at townhall.com. The idiot that did the review had not only never played the game, he based his review off of clips that he saw on youtube. After he was proven to be wrong on several counts he tried to defend his statement saying that it was what he considered correct.

One of the comments on the kotaku website was really good, some one mentioned that this could be lible and bioware would easily win a lawsuit against the idiot "journalist."

Rock on Adam, I %100 agree with you.

Posted by TechnoPirate - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 5:28 PM

100%

Posted by JDarkley - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 5:43 PM

I read that article last week, and my God that man is an idiot. I also read his defense article, and I am now convinced that that "journalist" has no common sense but plenty of ego. Dead on Sessler, dead on.

Posted by Spike31589 - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 5:57 PM

leave the games to sessler and plitical and religous anylasts sick to your stuff

Posted by Wiihater - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 6:06 PM

Ya the journalist is an idiot. I played the game and did the "sex" things and they were just a disraction in the game i forgot about it about an hour later!

Posted by Bellamorte - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 6:12 PM

Holy crap.

I've never seen him this worked up.

Two Thumbs up!!

Posted by rpm285sm - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 6:22 PM

Thank you Adam. It's about friggin time someone said something about this stuff. I could let that moronic blogger go because it is a blog...but I just heard about the Fox News thing and man, I'm pissed! The game is probably better for a kid than watching the shows Fox airs regularly. I'm glad to see you so worked up about it. This should offend every gamer out there, not because these people dont like the game, but because they'd flat out lie about it for political reasons.

Posted by Suhaila - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 6:24 PM

Agreed except I don't think either side really cares about video games outside of getting the people who actually vote voting for them. Seriously, how many of us actually vote? In this case it would be the people who find video games foreign and scary and just want it to go away. We're never going to win.

Posted by StrongestSaiyan - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 6:59 PM

Both this "journalist" and the people at Fox might have been able to sound a little credible if they had even played the game.

Posted by Shokblast - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 6:59 PM

Slow down. Mass Effect is a work of art, the opinion of one person doesn't change that fact. Also I hate poloticions.

Posted by mckin3228 - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 7:03 PM

does anyone think he sounds like a whinier nerdier george carlin
funny thing is I got mass effect yesterday and this morning I hear about the masseffect sex scene... weird

Posted by psychobaka - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 7:12 PM

First, I don't recall any Mass Effect advertisements that would target children, unless you plan on flaming CoD4 and Assassin's Creed as well. Second, the sex scenes in Mass Effect are hardly pornographic material--the kid would have to already know what was going on to get anything out of the 10-second sequences. Second, these scenes are tiny pieces of a VERY big pie.

Posted by S2Ghost - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 7:15 PM

I cant believe this idiot and Fox news went after this game. This guy is completely ignorant, who has probably wasted his life complaining about little BS things like this 2 second scene from the game. And Fox... Fox is airing more sex in their prime time shows then any video game to date. Isn't Fox the company that canceled good shows like Firefly and Futurama to show crappy reality shows like temptation island. Thank you once again Fox for the proof i need that you are the worst company on earth.

Posted by Oinkness - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 7:33 PM

MASS EFFECT IS THE DOWNFALL OF CIVILIZATION AS WE KNOW IT, AND ADAM SESSLAR SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED ON TV. HE'S WORSE THAN BENDER.

Posted by Shokblast - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 7:37 PM

Going back to my original comment, I glad you put your 2 cents in. But a journalist's opinion could never effect Mass Effect. That's like me trying to stop a comet with a controversial story. Though their are retards out there that will believe this.

Posted by RTR - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 7:39 PM

Someone just had to say it sometime: blogging journalists are freakin' idiots. Damn, they're idiots! I had a hunch it would be Adam who would be saying it. Besides, it's not like it's the first time there has been sexual material in games (Hot Coffee is a hell of a lot more explicit than the scenes from Mass Effect.)

Posted by RTR - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 7:40 PM

and controversial

Posted by joeyg143 - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 8:02 PM

Aphrodite- goddess of love. Wait, wtf?!?

Posted by cantonkid - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 9:28 PM

Look, here's my thing...old school conservatives are scared precisely because of what Adam was talking about in his points about young people flocking to a younger candidate. They are loosing the both size and control of their 'flocks' more and more...

Most of the gamers I know, even the republican ones, don't have a problem with these games. It's just the fringe who want to make a stink and get some limelight when the media decide to pick up on it.

I live in Hong Kong and the big news over here was that Singapore had banned the game for the same reasons, until at last a rating was applied to it and the ban was lifted.

I think Adam is well within his rights to 'preach' back since he is not the one making the games 'political' in the first place.

Posted by gamebrain89 - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 9:30 PM

Completly agree with you here adam. Its okay to get worked up, as long as you dont do what some of our stupider collegues have done and send insipid and completly retarded emails to the offenders. that only strengthes their arguements. Stay calm, and refute their retard remarks with cold, hard, facts.

Posted by gamebrain89 - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 9:31 PM

Just like you did. If only some morons would realize this. thank you for making sense Adam. I Salute you. ROFLMAO

Posted by redshirtkiller - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 9:47 PM

The comments made by the Townhall.com blogger are just ludicrous. What people, regardless of your political beliefs, need to realize is that games are an art form. To try to censure an art form is an attack on freedom of speech which is guaranteed to citizens of the United States in the Constitution. Sessler and the EA guy are slightly off target in their points though. The debate should be over how the media, Fox on the right, and NBC/CNN/MSNBC on the left, try to use their influence to SHAPE the news to their advantage and stifle the rights of others. This story is a microcosm of the overall problem of the media being able to create a story by using the inflamed and uninformed writings of some second rate blogger who probably sucked at Pong and now gets back at the industry by trashing amazing works of art.

Posted by Jack_NEzraF - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 10:12 PM

Right on Adam, I despise figureheads that make brash judgements on things just because they don't
appeal to their ignorant sense of what's 'right' and whats 'wrong'. Keep it up man

Posted by JustinRodriguez - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 10:49 PM

Excellent, completly true. But I would like to see Adam touch more on the Fox News slander of Mass Effect. Their ignorant lies were nothing short of criminal and I'm sure Adam shares my opinion that these people shouln't even be allowed to comment on something of which they no nothing of themselves, all they hear is "Sex" and "Video game" and the automatically assume that we are currupting the youth of America. I'm 15 and have played every GTA since GTA3 and yet I have never went out on a friday night to go kill hookers.

Posted by LuckyGoose - Thursday, January 24, 2008 12:26 AM

I agree, I hate fox news their quote "We report, you decide" is a bunch of b/s and also I agree that the younger generation wants to have politicians that are open minded and think video games are our downfall which is why Obama will be the youths choice for president. (Hillary Clinton is good, but I dislike her because of her comments on videogames a few years back)

Posted by LuckyGoose - Thursday, January 24, 2008 12:27 AM

Correction: "...are NOT our dowfall..."

Posted by Argama - Thursday, January 24, 2008 3:27 AM

What's that "big tent thing that was promised 7 years ago"?

Posted by Asrugan - Thursday, January 24, 2008 4:45 AM

The real deal with the whole issue. Video Games are narrative form, narrative form has existed since the damn of man. In all narrative form (that remains uncensored)there is development and evolution towards more beliveable stories. Guess what? People have sex in relationships, relationships make up the majority of narrative form. so it's natural progression. Are we to make these stories LESS beliveable? Move backwards? Perhaps our future characters should have a storkbot 2.0 and avoid any kind of filthy smut all together.

Posted by EliteWiitard - Thursday, January 24, 2008 5:05 AM

I'm a republican and I love videogames.......

Posted by dudius - Thursday, January 24, 2008 6:14 AM

I hate that people target videogames because "its kids stuff". TV and movies have more violence and sexual content, and parents need to pay attention to what their kids do rather than make the videogame developers and their customers suffer.

Posted by angelus2402004 - Thursday, January 24, 2008 7:33 AM

Go Adam!!!!

Posted by hetman - Thursday, January 24, 2008 7:46 AM

Mass effect is fun. But really how many kids are really going to enjoy it. It is a little in depth for most kids. And secondly your Acording to the American software associatioan your average gamer is 33 years old. I know their are a lot of virgin gamers out their but damn if you cannot deal with sexual content by time your 33 you have a major mental health issuie.

Posted by fedaykin0 - Thursday, January 24, 2008 8:40 AM

i haven't watched this 'soapbox' because i haven't had access to a comp with speakers in in the past 30-some hours (yeah, i live in 1992); i haven't played Mass Effect because i won't have time for a couple of days. . .and i'm going to weigh in anyhow:

hollywood makes movies for adults, right? movies you probably wouldn't take a kid to? yeah? so i don't understand why people condemn videogames with 'adult' themes. quite frankly, it isn't just this business about Mass Effect that i find insulting: what's insulting is that we're essentially hearing that videogames are for children, and any videogame with 'adult themes' is obviuosly designed to corrupt and subvert children. it's about time the general public, and talking-heads specifically, realize that a specific media can be aimed at specific audiences, just like rated 'R' films. or maybe these people should blow their own minds and stroll down to their local comic shop. Archie's come a long way. . .

Posted by jedi0bscura - Thursday, January 24, 2008 8:59 AM

As a graphic designer I have had to study art in college and every time a new and different type of art was created it went through a period where nobody would except it, it was thought to be controversial and therefore was picked on. However, over time, they all caught on and in there own ways added a new dimension to art.

This is all just an affirmation that video games really are an art form. This whole cycle has been repeated many times over the course of human existence and will continue to do so for eternity. Don't worry about it too much (but please keep defending it) in a few more years when all these uptight conservative politicians die off and are replaced with more people who understand the art form of video games, we'll look back at all this and laugh at their ignorance.

Adam For President

Posted by fedaykin0 - Thursday, January 24, 2008 9:18 AM

@jedi0bscura: videogames as Piss Christ, eh?

Posted by GamerNx - Thursday, January 24, 2008 10:21 AM

How come no one ever got on to any other bioware/interplay game? You could always have lesbian sex. I mean it wasnt really a scene, the screen would go dark and then go back to your characters standing there. But still. And I would like to state, that Hillary and Obama and a lot of other democrats opose video games more so than most other people.

Posted by schroetlin - Thursday, January 24, 2008 11:14 AM

the game is no worse than some of the situations and ass you see on tv now. i don't see what the problem is

Posted by jedi0bscura - Thursday, January 24, 2008 11:24 AM

@fedaykin0 in a sense yes

Posted by sinister6972 - Thursday, January 24, 2008 12:27 PM

All I want to say is, WOW! Did you see Adam's face???? He looked like he's ready to beat some ass! And I thought that Adam was a calm and respectful person. Hey A.S, if anyone else makes you mad, come holla at me! "Conracts" will be made and questions will be answered...I mean, the "legal" way, right? Unless you wanna do it the "illegal" way. Its up to you.

Anyway, JediObscura you make a good point. Art! And I took this..."This is all just an affirmation that video games really are an art form". And you know what, I've always felt that way. Videogames are art and is also a metaphor to what life is.

PS: By the way, I think I read a comment about a shorty said that he played GTA and his 15 and that he NEVER went out and killed hookers. Are you serious shorty? LOL!! But I do believe this is not a serious issue though. ONLY IF THE GOVERNMENT GETS INVOLVED DO WHAT WE DO OVER HERE...RUN!!! I believe theres more questions that need to be answered instead of this...

Posted by VergilSnake - Thursday, January 24, 2008 1:47 PM

Dude...Sessler..you're awesome.

Posted by Autobot_Who - Thursday, January 24, 2008 4:41 PM

I haven't played Mass Effect and probably won't and haven't read the article, so I can comment on neither. However, Rush did go to bat for gamers in the past. When the Virginia Tech attack happened, someone called the show when we knew nothing about the shooter and "prophesised" that he had to be a gamer and blamed video games. Rush pretty much called him an idiot for blaming video games.

Posted by Lil_Jon83 - Thursday, January 24, 2008 6:29 PM

PPPLLEEEASE!!!

If your not seeing it in vide games, then on the internet. If not online, then TV.

The truth is, there's no such thing as fascism in America.

Posted by pokefan493 - Thursday, January 24, 2008 8:47 PM

You sure did freak out Adam. 1st time I think he was ever bleeped on this podcast. But I agree with you Adam. Little things like this shouldn't get people in a tisey (unless your Jack Thompson). I would go play Mass Effect right now exccept for the fact I don't own a 360.

Posted by hyrulefantic - Friday, January 25, 2008 3:10 PM

I cant believe that the media would pick on one of the best games to come out of 2007. Im with adam and EA games 100%. Im also mad at cooper lawrence (her name doesnt deserved to be capitalized)for talking sh%t about mass effect, she never had never played the game!!!

Posted by silverkraid - Friday, January 25, 2008 4:34 PM

TESTIFY SESSLER!!!!

Posted by jpacoolbreeze - Friday, January 25, 2008 5:06 PM

It's sad to see that some are willing to vote one way or another simply because of what someone says about video games. I myself watch Fox News all the time, but the comments made by people were dumb. The comments were made on an opinion show NOT on the news program itself. On such a show they can give their opinions, as uninformed as they are, all they want. One big problem is parents who buy games intended for adults for their children.

Posted by Twitchin - Friday, January 25, 2008 5:20 PM

That gave me chills.

Thank you Adam.

good Job due good job

between people who buy games just to buy them, knowing that the game is shovelware, and so called " journalists " giving expert testimonials on subject matter, they not only know nothing about, but more important don't care to find out anything about, it's awesome to see Ms. Webb and yourself speak truthfully about crappy games just as honestly and fairly as you would truly great games. i'd much rather get my reviews, previews, and tech related news items from you and my world news from Jon Stewart any. p.s. could you maybe ask the program director to maybe get rid of jkx... i mean one day you played like an ENTIRE day of him... sheesh. one or two episodes out of a seven day is barely acceptable. And cops too... that show sux. you get better episodes on that new tru t.v. and they're the extreme ones too.

Didn't realize Adam was a republican. I agree with everything he said except for the part about, people going where they don't want to why can't gamers just have fun. (non-political)
Lets all give it a break. Until they institute the draft most of you have nothing to worry about.

But Then Again
I Might be Totally Wrong.

Posted by Radien66 - Saturday, January 26, 2008 11:05 AM

adam if you were anymore awsome you would rival chuck norris. and you are right. in my eyes people who mostly talk down on games/gamers are not gamers them selfs they are just people with no lives that are trying to get their book notice by their "political opinon" so intill those people become an expert on games they should just go in the little corner and be quite and leave the game talk to people who know games like x-play

Posted by CAW4 - Saturday, January 26, 2008 12:57 PM

It was mentioned on x-play on Fri. and I liked Adam's comment because she insulted the game without even playing it

Sessler on x-play:"Dear Cooper Laurence. I haven't read your book, but it sucks. I believe that it should be keept out of the hands of impressionable young women so they don't turn into the simpleton you have shown yourself to be."
