We should have seen it coming. Cloverfield seized the box office over the weekend like a steel-jawed titan, and refused to let go, shaking down over $41 million at the theater, and murderizing the competition. The film had been tracking pretty high, but no one anticipated such a huge take, and this film is definitely on the way to being a real monster...get it? Monster? Because the movie has a...never mind.
Also impressive in a different way was 27 Dresses, otherwise known as "the female alternative to Cloverfield," which drew $22 million, and cemented star Katherine Heigl's (Knocked Up) status as a real player who can draw people to the movies. What this also means is that Grey's Anatomy is on borrowed time, as she's most likely out of there ASAP.
