Spidey Writers Make Fans Angry

Posted by Mike D'Alonzo - Thursday, January 17, 2008 9:55 AM

In the newest Spider-Man storyline, as featured in Amazing Spider-Man, the end of the storyline known as "One More Day" has evolved into one called "Brand New Day," but it's not new at all. In fact, it rewinds the Spider-Man continuity twenty-one years and dissolves Peter Parker's marriage to Mary Jane Watson, which took place in 1987. It also makes Pete a nerd again, and moves him back in with Aunt May. This, predictably, has fans of the webslinger pretty upset.

How did this happen? It's kind of weird, but here's the scoop. As a part of a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May's life, they couple agreed to dissolve their marriage and go back in time to when it happened, as if it never happened. Mephisto did this because Peter and MJ share a rare kind of love that it makes him gloriously happy to erase from the world. Honestly. That's the explanation. We can't figure out why die-hard Spider-Man fans would be upset.

Oh my god, a comic book marriage has come to an end, how horrible.

Posted by little_eddy - Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:00 AM

i have those comics and i think that whole idea was pretty cool. hate all you want.

Posted by unaturalx - Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:01 AM

oh but wait, it was really Spidey's clone that got sent back....... hey Marvel your Comics suck now.

Posted by cmg61904 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:26 AM

What?!? I haven't read the comics but that's screwed up.

Posted by crimean - Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:29 AM

What I don't get is this. Isn't it pretty normal for old ladies to die? Isn't that something that adults should be able to handle on some level?

Posted by unaturalx - Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:34 AM

especialy since Aunt may should be like 1,000 years old by now.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:34 AM

Mephisto he is so awesome. I personally like any character whos whole being centers around producing more hate in the world, and stopping true love from existing.

Posted by DrRotwang - Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:56 AM

So if the continuity got set back 20 years, does that mean that it's 1987 in the comics again, too? That'd be pretty swank, because back then the pop music was bet-

- no, no, wait. The Fat Boys.

Never mind.

Aunt May was dying because she was shot with a bullet that was meant for Peter. The comics are set in present day. The lamest part, though, is that everyone remembers that Spiderman took off his mask, but no one remembers who's face was under the mask, even though it was a world wide event. It's Peter's face, if anyone was wondering. I read the whole series leading up to and including One More Day and Brand New day and I feel betrayed by J. Michael Strazinski and I'm finished with the Spiderman titles until they pull their heads out of their asses and figure out what they're doing. This is a prime example of why I hate comics, the quality of the writing has plummeted.

glad i only read DC. boo marvel and their power happy editor in chief.

Posted by Nomad_19 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 12:35 PM

@mdalonzo... once again get your facts straight.
things didnt go back to 1987 but events that occured during the past 21 years,(according to the terrible writing staff at marvel), occured as a consequence of the marriage. So they voided the marriage and things didn't happen in the same manner. If you notice the whole superhero registration arc seemed to have happened but not how everyone read it. Maybe this is marvel's attempt to take back the whole 'clone/ben reily' arc. Or they are trying to bring back Captain America. What I want to know is how they can come up with awesome story like 'the Other' and then void with this crap!

Posted by thecolorred199 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 12:39 PM

It's actually kind of brilliant because it leaves one giant movie tie-in loophole. No more Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane if they decide to make more movies in this general arc. Cause seriously that woman can't act her way out of a diaper.

Posted by Nomad_19 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 12:44 PM

@thecolorred199
Life imitates art, MJ was considered a bad actress in the spider-man movies and KD is bad actress in real life..

Posted by thecolorred199 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 12:49 PM

Touche my friend.

Posted by mdalonzo - Thursday, January 17, 2008 1:33 PM

@Nomad

I understand what you're saying, but I meant that the continuity got rolled back, not the actual calendar. Hope this helps.

Posted by fabian562 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 1:55 PM

why are spidey fans upset? Oh, cause that's a retarded explanation, is that why? Read Green Lantern, MArvel Sucks.

Posted by sonicmasteraj - Thursday, January 17, 2008 2:28 PM

They're upset because the time-line is screwed over. Between the SERIOUS BUSINESS of Civil War and One More Day, I'm not surprised that the fans are pissed. First they kill off Cap and now everything we believed from the past twenty one years has been destroyed. As far as DC being better than Marvel, allow me to throw in the opposition. If you're interested in having five Earths with more versions of Superman than you can count, a guy who's weak against a rock, a rich emo who likes to run around in spandex with young boys while speaking in the third person, a "perfect" comic world where no superhero ever has any problems outside of fighting Solomon Grundy and, just to be a total ass, a bunch as boring as hell movies, go do your DC thing. As for me, make mine Marvel and build me a hellcycle. If Nick Cage can be Ghost Rider than so can I.

Posted by banodyne - Thursday, January 17, 2008 2:35 PM

This is all Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada's idea. Last year, he went around conventions saying he thought Spider-Man was more interesting unmarried. Fans at the conventions vocally disagreed. But he did it anyway. Somehow you get the impression he's having his character act out his personal life.

This is the worst story Marvel has done since the infamous Clone Saga of the 90's.

Posted by EliteWiitard - Thursday, January 17, 2008 2:46 PM

If no one gets hung or shot because of this, I will officially be angry for over a minute.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, January 17, 2008 2:54 PM

When you mentioned the movie ghostrider I threw up a little in my mouth. That how horrible that movie was. I do not read many comics anymore. But if I was to read them I would stick with the graphic novels that usually have a beginning and ending. So you do not have this sopeopera type story telling going on.

Posted by Caprice23 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 3:06 PM

LEAVE KIRSTEN ALONE!!!

jk but i think she's alright, anyways, MARVEL is for children, DC is comics for a more intelligent comics fan. Disagree read Grant Morrison's take on Batman or Superman.

Posted by sonicmasteraj - Thursday, January 17, 2008 3:17 PM

@hetman

The whole soap opera rigmarole is the reason I stopped watching wrestling but comic will never get old for me. Hell, I just started collecting the Dan Ketch Ghost Rider comics last summer. Those stories are worth reading.

Posted by sonicmasteraj - Thursday, January 17, 2008 3:19 PM

And as for Marvel being for children all i can say is this. Comics, no matter how you look at them, are all for children. Unless you're talking about comics of pornographic nature or just good old adult fantasy comics.

Marvel brought me back into comics with Moon Knight, Nova, Marvel Zombies, and Annihilation. Where I live you can't find a comic shop within 100 miles so whatever piques my interest has to be something pretty big. I've never been into DC as I don't understand how they can have a character who is so invincible and almost god-like ala Superman. Hit him with an atom bomb, no problem, throw a pea sized of kryptonite at him and bam he's dead.

Posted by fabian562 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 3:36 PM

here come the marvel whores, with their simplistic attacks on dc icons. Oh and Calling someone EMO as an insult is so EMO. Go watch Daredevil, Elektra or GhostRider on dvd or something. Yes Yes Catwoman sucked dont even waste key strokes on pointing that out.

Thanks for destroying 21 years worth of history and sending out a big "F-YOU!" to your readers just to self serve your own insane obsession, Joey.

Posted by lightknight77 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 4:35 PM

Aunt May is an old lady, she needs to go ahead and die. Let the young whippersnapper lovers save each others lives now.

Posted by Blaznak - Thursday, January 17, 2008 5:41 PM

I could not believe what a head-up-the-butt decision Marvel made with this story line. It shows Peter loved his Aunt more than his wife or his daughter. It also showed him as a loser because HE is a loser (as opposed to the ongoing -fate makes him a loser- he always had going on before) as he concedes to evil (Mephisto).

Make Mine something other than Marvel...

Later!

The "Day" arcs have to be epic fail country... Although I have to admit that I'm curious about who the new Captain America will be... $5 says it's Frank Castle; any takers?

Oh, and to all the Marvel crowd, DC Comics are actually quite awesome, but what I don't understand is why they haven't given the Doom Patrol their own new series... unless they've dissolved the team, of course (although I believe the Changeling is leading them at this point)...

Posted by Caprice23 - Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:36 PM

Maybe the peter parker that made the deal with mephisto is actually a skrull

Fat Boys Joke = swing-and-a-miss.

Will I EVER learn?!

Posted by Nomad_19 - Friday, January 18, 2008 2:01 PM

i don't know what is marvels aprehention to killing aunt may... they didnt hesitate to kill Captain America...

Posted by Nomad_19 - Friday, January 18, 2008 2:09 PM

@OBELIX
the new Captain America is "bucky" better known as Winter Soldier

Posted by lockepsb - Sunday, January 20, 2008 10:22 PM

dude... marvel's been killing off ppl and screwing up continuities for awhile now... but some day they'll put it all back together the way it was and everyone will be happy... I'm sure if Magneto's daughter gains her sanity back she'll give all the mutants their abilities back, bring back some of the now deceased new x-men... bring back captain america, and make it so peter parker and mary jane are married again.

Spawn is the best Comic dude ever !!!!!

Posted by jloughry1976 - Monday, January 21, 2008 11:24 AM

In a way isnt Marvel pulling something that DC did? Remember what Wally West aka Flash had the Spectre do? He had Spectre eraser from everyones memory that he was the Flash......I really think it is lame on Marvels part to just retcon 21 years of comic book history just to save one persons life. Its also kinda lame that it is made to appear that Peter Parker is a mommas boy to his aunt.

The explanation is that Mephisto is jealous of the "kind" of love that Parker and Mary Jane have? Also very lame explanation, tell us the real reason Marvel, tells us why you felt the need to do this...I mean besides the stupid answer of because we could....
