We're a little stumped by this one, but it looks like both the 20 gig and the 60 gig PlayStation 3s are being discontinued in Japan; the 40-gig model will be the only one available in the inscrutable island nation. That means no more backward compatibility for PS2 games in Japan.
We'd understand getting rid of the smaller HD models in favor of the beefier 60 gig model, but getting rid of the bigger-drived model is a little odd...
Whether this is a harbinger of Sony's plan for the PlayStation 3 in the rest of the world remains to be seen.
Engadget.com: 20GB and 60GB PS3 discontinued in Japan -- PS2 backward compatibility ends

and it's not that unbelievable.. of the various models, the 20gig, 40gig, 60gig, and 80gig.. the 20 and 60 are the oldest (and least we should forget, the 'new and improved' versions cut costs of production, which is why the price came down last year) So it stands to reason that if any were to be cut off, it would be them.
here endeth the lesson.
*Passes around a bowl of popcorn*
Extra salt and butter in the back.
1st...flame
i thought they were already discontinued
time for me to get out of that rock i was living in...
or should i say time machine?
1. PS3's PSN network is much better that Xbox Live, and it's free!
2. PS3's exclusives are a lot better and there's a much wider selection of them instead of most of them being shooters.
3. PS3's graphics are obviously far superior to the 360's.
4. PS3 has Blu-ray which is raping HD-DVD which 360 has.
5. PS3 has much more power and is the reason why a lot of gaming companies are deciding to start making games for the PS3 first and then decide if they'll port them to the 360.
In the PAL areas the 60g has software emulation...None the differences again... Although not in NTSC... I have the 60g but as far as I am concerned playing PS2 games and Ps1 games are dead to me...ever since MGS3 online was shut off.
Buy a bigger HD and there is none the difference, people buy these next gen consoles for the next gen games...Otherwise I would play ps2 games on my ps2
I play PS2 game on my PS2. Besides the last PS2 game I got was GOWII and I beat if before I got a PS3.
Why does G4 always highlight negative things about Sony(even though this isn't really bad), and don't say anything bad about Microsoft, I.e. How the 360 sales really suck outside the US....maybe?
Now its getting to that its just another promise Sony is gonna break to gamers.
Part of the reason people were willing to pay $600 for the thing in the first place.
Ps2 has alot of great games.
As evidence by the fact it still outsells the Ps3.
1) Xbox Live is better than PSN (I've used them both)
2)You only named 3 of exclusives for X360 (dont forget Forza Motorsport 2 and Chromehounds)
3) The graphics are a lot closer than you think...the ps3 physics are a bit noticibly better for the ps3
4) Yes blue-ray is better but right now there not rapping hd-dvd just yet, very close though
5) From what i have seen a lot more games are being released for the x360 more than the ps3, but i havnt payed attention to that part yet since i only play about 2 games
the ps3 is a good system but who needs a computer when you may already have 1?

Because M$soft paid off G4 like a certain U.S. high ranking official did with Fox News 4 years ago :) Sessler and Pierrera rarely have anything good to say about $ony. Earlier this week over the CES coverage, Munn knocked Pierrera about his hatred for $ony and he did not have anything to say about it. $ony had all of these cool announcements about the PSP and the question that Sessler asks in "The Loop" segment: "is $ony now dumping games for the PSP?" What's up with that G4? Turning some really cool applications into a negative spin.
After all, the CES not a video game show. It is supposed to show off what gadgets can do: especially if that stray from the norm.
Get some balls and say what you really think, not what people(M$oft) are paying you to say.

I love my PS3!
xbox live rapes the crap out of psn. period. i've got both and have used both a lot and theyre not even in the same class. it's like comparing a ford taurus to a dodge viper. the only similarity is that they are both cars.
seriously though angelblade vii... you're too stupid to talk. you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. firstly you missed half the xbox exclusives. secondly... lair got the worst rating from gamespy i've ever seen in my life, anybody that gave it a good rating was paid off. and heavenly sword the full game... is the length of a long demo. i could keep going but there's a character limit on here telling me you're not worth my time.
in short: blu ray rules, live kicks ass and dual shock controllers should always be bundled.
You know why we think that G4tv is in the back pocket of ms.
Remember?
1997? ms invested $1BBBBBBBBillion in comcast?
comcast owns g4?
remember that?
that's why we think they are in the pocket of ms
The reason I mentioned only three exclusives for the 360 was because only three are actually good games people are talking about, azhol! Another thing, i so know everything about the 360 as my friend owns one and i play it at his house all the time. Compared to a PS3, the 360 is outclassed in every way... Oh, and another thing, i didn't have to shell out extra money for my PS3's online play or freak over the 360's RROD (which happened to my friend just a few weeks ago.) SO SCREW YOU!
Remeber back in the day where game system came with the system and that was it? Those were the good old days?

No actually i remember getting a game(no demo disc, an actual game) and two controllers for tha same price..
Ok, it sounds like there are a few PS3 owners, reading this post (you are a minority on G4 it seems), so here is my question to you. With this news, I am looking to buy a PS3 to replace my now dead PS2, so PS2 compatibility is a major thing for me. Of the models that are out today in the US, what model would best play the PS1 and PS2 games?...
