Xbox To Get Motion Control?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, December 27, 2007 7:55 AM

Reportedly, Microsoft is following in the footsteps of Sony and Nintendo and plans on marketing a motion-sensing controller for the 360.

The skinny comes from Xboxfamily.com, who reports: "Xbox 360 owners can expect to be playing motion sensing games, much like that of the Wii or PS3, by the end of next year."

The first-person add-on to the 360 is supposedly coming from Saratoga, California firm Gyration, the company responsible for the prototype designs of the Nintendo Wii-mote, and creating motion-sensing remote for Microsoft's Media Center.

These consoles really have a good time stealing from each other. Hope they do a better job then sony, how could they not their not that stupid, Now 360 owners will be mad BALLINNNN!!

Posted by nativepride - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:26 AM
ha ha microsoft never gots thier own ideas thats funny i remember when P.R's at microsoft said montion controll was not a good idea then nintendo pimp slapped every one with wii sony got sixaxis bill pays good money to still ideas haha remember bill and apple gates give it up.

Posted by jman03 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:28 AM
Hm. Feeling left out, are we?

Posted by rondogg96 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:33 AM
This will be cool, given that it will actually work, most of the PS3 games use Sixaxis but it's makes playing your games more difficult and more of a chore, if Bill can get this right then power to him, and as well as another welcome addition to the XBOX 360.

Posted by Rootbeer120 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:35 AM
hopefully they dont do it. wiis motion controls are fantastic, but using it with the 360 controller will just be a hastle. it wont do good, just let nintendo keep motion, theyve got it down

Posted by slythe720 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:37 AM
THIS IS BLLSHT!! I like this stuff on my wii but NOT my 360. I cannot imagine playing GoW2 with motion control. This is the worst news ever

Bill Gates does not equal microsoft anymore. Will the people on these post not understand that. I like the wii a lot. But I cannot see this being any good. If I want motion sensing I will just play a wii.

Posted by cmdluke - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:41 AM
can't microsoft ever come up with their own ideas?

Posted by youowned - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:43 AM
that would be a good add on

Posted by vole182 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:47 AM
Wow, it will be like having a Wii with good graphics :)

Posted by Malfar - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:48 AM
I never played the wii so this intrigues me.

It would be great for fun little XBL games.

But what I really hope that they do is something like the Head-mounted, 3D-Display that was posted last week.

So, if MS is smart,(and we all know more money more brains) they will develop a Head-mounted, 3D-Display.

One of my idols Daniel Negreanu, loves wii bowling. So motion sensing controllers can't be all that bad....

Posted by VariousObjects - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:56 AM
I hate these stupid niches they think people want

Posted by GeorgeArauz - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:57 AM
Even though i have a Wii and the motion sensor games are great, i dont want it for my Xbox 360. Granted, PS2.5 has it.. but look how wonderful it is doing for them... NOT!!

Posted by TheRufio - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:57 AM
Don't do it Mircosoft. We like our 360s exactly how they are now. If I wanted motion control to be an important factor in my gaming, I would have bought a wii.

Posted by beastieboy - Thursday, December 27, 2007 9:21 AM
we're perfectly fine without motion controls...really. if you guys want to do something useful fix the hardware issues with the red ring of death and all.

Posted by Roy2008 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 9:35 AM
Wow way yo go Microsoft!
Why do you feel the need to copy other companys ideas?

For one you system has already been out for 2 years, making all your old previous games not capable of motion sensing.

and for all you xbot fanboys...........Sony did not copy Nintendo's idea with the wii's motion sensing. Sony has had motion sensing as an offer since PS1! Look it UP!

Posted by yoshiarecool - Thursday, December 27, 2007 9:38 AM
I can see it now
"After saying how gimicky and unstable mostion-sensing gaming is, we at microsoft have decided once again to steal great ideas, and to implement motion sensing into our own consoles. The add-on will cost 500$ and will be mandatory to buy for all 360 owners or your consoles will be bricked. You will see great and original games like Xbox Sports, Xbox Play, 360 Music, White Steel, and Halo Prime."
"Now if you excuse us, we're going to the Apple show to steal the Iphones idea and create the Iwindows vista."

Posted by fedaykin0 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 9:53 AM
@yoshiarecool
lol. i just can't wait for Halo Prime. make way for the iZune.

Posted by DSGB4life - Thursday, December 27, 2007 9:55 AM
I'm fairly certain this is false. Why would Microsoft make a crappy PS3 controller? If anything they may patent something for their NEXT console.
Roy2008 Sony stole their idea from Nintendo.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:06 AM
Like I said before. I love the wii it is really fun. But it is not necessary for the 360 to have motion sensing. That is the reason to own a 360/wii. As for the motion sensing on the ps3 it blows nuts. And I beleive if the 360 does get motion sensing it will be as bad if not worst than the ps3.

Posted by staychisel - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:06 AM
learn from sony, motion control is a bad idea

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:19 AM
lol wow, just wow Microsoft. first sony's controller, now their motion sensing too???

i remember everyone hated the original big xbox controllers so then Microsoft made the s-controller. if you take a close look at it the 4 buttons on the right side, they were layed out just like sony's ps2 controller.

Posted by TheRedStar - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:21 AM
Question....what FPS uses Motion Sensing as a primary in game play??? (in Resistance it's more like a trink it) O i get it they just want you xBots to spend more money on add on pices that way you can pay more for the product as an individual item. Wonderful!!

@hetman: Gates is a majority Stock holder so he can esentialy do what he wants in M$oft. He hasn't lost Control like Ted Turner and CNN. Please read up on Corp. environments. Just beacuse the Big Boss isnt' always around doesn't mean he's not in charge.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:21 AM
@bookshelf. And the ps controllers buttons are layed out exactly like the snes. Who cares.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:23 AM
@redstar. It is an add on you do not have to buy it. I agree I do not think it will work. All I am saying Bill G is donating all his money to charity. So if he makes more money it is better for everybody.

Posted by PaNfOoT - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:25 AM
I have a Wii for motion controls and a 360 for traditinal controls, I want to keep it that way.

Posted by mberko1 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:46 AM
now 360 fans can 'cross swords' with Wii fans, whoopie!

Posted by fedaykin0 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:52 AM
@TheRedStar:
re: that dude's awesome Wii video from the other day: it's FPS implications pretty much smack you in the face. now, M$ may not be Masters of Innovation, but they aren't so stupid that they can't see the benefit.

Posted by santjnthn - Thursday, December 27, 2007 11:06 AM
Funny how some of you think that Microsoft is stealing ideas when Microsoft was the first with a harddrive, microsoft was the first with a dash board, Microsoft was the first with a 1 unified online network, Microsoft was the first with wireless controller system, Microsoft was the first to use PC graphics cards aka Nvidea (Xbox One), by the way.. Motion controllers had been made on the PC way before Wii or PS3 ever had them. Microsoft started that a while back but never took off. So please people, before you comment on this, do your homework first and get it right the first time..

Posted by staychisel - Thursday, December 27, 2007 11:07 AM
xbox also has the pretty sweet trigger buttons, if sony took that idea i wouldn't blame them cause it's way better than having 4 bumper buttons

Posted by hetman - Thursday, December 27, 2007 11:32 AM
@staychisel. I wouldnt blame them either. You really do need to analouge buttons like they have on the 360.

Posted by haytxa_911 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 11:36 AM
sounds good to me

Posted by marporte - Thursday, December 27, 2007 12:34 PM
I blame the developers. Most of them are trying to make a quick buck instead of trying to make quality games. They made a series of crappy mini games and shoddy ports that have a wiimote waggle gimmick. Capcom is one of the few developers that is taking their time to make good games. Ubisoft, EA, Rockstar and Namco are the most guilty of making crappy games when they have made much better on the PS2 which doesn't even has as much horsepower as the Wii.

Posted by Brick69 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 12:49 PM
Well if it comes from Saratoga its gotta suck, just like their football team, and town fooking azn gangs.

Posted by Colonol_Carter - Thursday, December 27, 2007 12:59 PM
come up with something different than the other systems morons dont just copy

Posted by M4Dash - Thursday, December 27, 2007 1:14 PM
"Xbox 360 owners can expect to be playing motion sensing games, much like that of the Wii or PS3, by the end of next year."

by the time you do that something else will be the new fad. wait im getting confused, hardcore gamers want motion control, if so why so much hate for the wii when it goes this style for fps.

Posted by Lightbarier - Thursday, December 27, 2007 1:52 PM
God microsoft is stupid ugh man I hope and predect that it fails meriably come up with your own ideas god and for the 360 if they were going to do motion sensing the least they could do would be to keep it for the next xbox in so many years.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, December 27, 2007 2:27 PM
@lightbarier. To quote santjnthn "Funny how some of you think that Microsoft is stealing ideas when Microsoft was the first with a harddrive, microsoft was the first with a dash board, Microsoft was the first with a 1 unified online network, Microsoft was the first with wireless controller system, Microsoft was the first to use PC graphics cards aka Nvidea (Xbox One)," So yea the ps3 has never stolen anything from microsoft.

Posted by prscorpio2581 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 2:50 PM
wow, this topic actually had ppl talking about the point and not baggin on another system, maybe baggin on the motion system but that was the point.

Posted by TheRedStar - Thursday, December 27, 2007 3:21 PM
@santjnthn: You need to do your home work. Sony and Nintendo had wire less long before Xbox even existed. PS2 had online play and a HARD drive before xBox. If i'm not mistaken the N64 had a HDD add on. I know I still have the HDD for my PS2 and i used to play FFxi on it. How much experience do you have w/ Games again??

@fedaykin0 yea your right but...then again listen to what your FPS brethern on this forum are saying...they may not like changeing their form of playing.....After all the FPS Genre hasn't changed much since Doom popularized it.

Posted by Shonuvv - Thursday, December 27, 2007 3:31 PM
Microsoft WTF?! Get your own F@%# Ideas!

Wimote = Awsome
PS3 Controller = Fail
Microsoft motion sensor controler = Epic Fail x 9000!!!!

The last thing I want is to be controling a Banshee with the controller and not the perfect analog stick in Halo 4, plese reconsider, don't do it.

Posted by shock3755 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 3:42 PM
EVERYONE steals Nintendo's ideas. Thats why they are inovative they always have been, and hopefully always will be

Posted by fedaykin0 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 3:46 PM
@TheRedStar: i'm not 'right.' i'm just stating my opinion. i would enjoy the versatility that it would lend to the genre, but i don't necessarily feel it needs fixing or updating.

Posted by tobz1000 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 5:02 PM
I F'CKIN LOVE NOODLES

Posted by 1mikeg - Thursday, December 27, 2007 5:09 PM
And MS makes another stab for that oh so lucrative casual market. Hope you like your port of Carnival Games.

Posted by Zergham - Thursday, December 27, 2007 5:53 PM
Wow talk about desperate! Microsoft gaming going down in flames fast! Dreamcast 2 the next coming!

Posted by psychobaka - Thursday, December 27, 2007 6:14 PM
@shock3755: I have to agree, about the only thing that didn't start with Nintendo was switching from cartridges to optical discs. I believe Sega CD was the first one to do that.

I think this will be about as popular as the HD-DVD drive add-on. Need I remind you guys that Nintendo was not the first company to try gesture-based videogame controls. The PC market had a few motion-sensing controllers long before the Wii came around.

Also, I think that it is OK for MS to get more adventurous now that they have established their presence in the gaming market. A redundant pursuit in my opinion, but its not a bad idea to go after the niche markets.

Posted by Ruscle - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:16 PM
Yep. I remember when all the next gen consoles was like motion sensing is such a gimmick. Slowly but surely they see that the hardcore gamers is a dieing breed. The casual gamer is running the show now.

Posted by mb24 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:17 PM
ms wishes they were sony:P lol but i find it funny how much they steal of each other... i remember when my friend said sony ripped of ms with the ps button which is true... but then i remembered ms ripped of sony and nintendo with the whole game console idea :P in short he got pwned.

Posted by MikeTheGreekGod - Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:19 PM
This is interesting. . . I wonder if they'll re-design the remote to a certain degree.......

Posted by naz3 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:33 PM
Im hardcore and i love the wii-mote!I also think that it can realy improve games like halo, have you played Metroid Prime 3?Also,who says that it will be added to the existing controller instead of being a new controller thats designed like the wii-mote?Its sad,99% of you are against this without even knowing the plan, pathetic, and you call yourself gamers...its not like nintendo wont innovate again or this will hurt thier sales, the wii is inexpensive and the price will drop in few months as well.If its a second controller than developers can decide to support one or the other in the creation of a game or both.Im against six axis, the reason that the wii-mote and nunchuck work is because they are exactly that, two controllers and therefor give the player a range of MOTION that is(quite frankly)impossible with a PS3 six-axis and therefor renders it pointless, thats right, the six-axis is pointless!Go 3-6-Mote!!!!!!!!

@DSGB4life

Nintendo Never Revieled its motion sesning until the Wii! Sony has had motion sensing since the Playstation 1! Yeah depending on the game the Sixaxis can BLOW! but if used properly it ROCKS!!!!!

and you heard it yourself they may release it by the end of next year! is they had it for their next conxole id consider it last gen!

Posted by Roy2008 - Thursday, December 27, 2007 11:09 PM
I just wish a company would stop copying everyones ideas! the Wii may have used motion sensing, but they used it in a more EFFECTIVE way. and they use it in about every game

the ps3 is more of an offer and uses it in some games. and when they use it. youhave a choice to use it.

I just wish companys would create their own original ideas. like the ps3 creating a controller to help the blind play.

Posted by Hidger - Friday, December 28, 2007 12:36 AM
Royalty fee? If they can make it better and it work it would be awesome. The wii is ok, an upgraded gamecube with motion control, true next gen, the like of the 360 and PS3 is in the hardware allowing more advance AI for a more immerse world and with motion control if it work would not be a bad thing. Taking one more tiny step closer to the holodeck.

Posted by sexysexyboi - Friday, December 28, 2007 5:37 AM
@Roy2008
a controller to help the blind play????...

Posted by santjnthn - Friday, December 28, 2007 5:53 AM
TheRedStar - Ad on's do not count, just because PS2 had a HDD for final fantasy did not make it the first system with a harddrive. Microsoft Xbox 360 was the first system that came out with wireless controllers right out the box, (Madcats wireless does not count) Microsoft Xbox was the first system with a harddrive built in right out the box. Microsoft xbox was the first system with a dashboard right out the box, Microsoft Xbox was the first system with ONE unified online network for online gaming. Microsoft started wireless gaming back in the PC, but it never took off. So for those who think Microsoft is stealing idea's. Do your homework first.

Posted by loco91 - Friday, December 28, 2007 7:06 AM
i dont think it should add on motion sensing, the 360 is the only next gen console that doesnt use it and its doing pretty good without it.

Posted by hetman - Friday, December 28, 2007 7:23 AM
I think if they make a motion control controller. It is not going to supersede the s controller or whatever they call it. I think it would be like a gun add on. Most of the games would still use your basic controllers. But you could buy certain party games that would use it. And if it cost as much as a wii mote I hate the idea. I thought it is like 60 bucks for a wii mote.

Posted by BERT0NE - Friday, December 28, 2007 9:14 AM
Why do people fear change???

Who says what it will be, it could be like the keyboard or headset for the controller just an add on. I will wait and see where this goes and if I don't like it I wont buy it!!

If I was these guys I would of said hay MS I have this great add on for your controller What do you think!!! put out a couple patches for a few old games or XBL games and bingo is your namo!

who cares I will just wait and see, I just hope they take it to the next level!!!

Posted by BERT0NE - Friday, December 28, 2007 9:28 AM
Plus if this news is true, I trust MS to help third party developers with software and other forms of support just like they do know...

That is one reason developers like MS because they know they will get good coop from the MS team!

I see some people in the comments are saying that Sony stole the motion-sensing idea from Nintendo. This is entirely untrue. In fact, Sony had the idea (and I think patented it) before Nintendo, its just that Nintendo had to ONLY concentrate on that, because that basically is all the system is, and Sony had to do multiple things to configure their system. I mean, think about it, take away motion-sensing away (from the Wii), and what do you have? A TV remote for a controller...does that sound like fun?

So really, both Nintendo and Microsoft stole the idea Sony, except Nintendo took the ball and ran with it, and Microsoft is just copying again...

Don't they have a history with that?
Apple Computer = Windows.
iPod = Zune
PS2/Gamecube = Xbox.
Motion Sensing for PS3/Wii = Motion Sensing for Xbox 360.

Probably others that I didn't mention and you can bet theres more to come!

Even if Microsoft is making a motion sentive controller, expect to pay some money.

Posted by TheRedStar - Friday, December 28, 2007 12:31 PM
@santjnthn: Umm could you read over you own post. You just identified things that were already established by other parties. M$ has done what they always done take something they like and incorporate it into there stuff and selling it as a bundle. They take pre-existing ideas and give it a M$ touch, yes they were the 1st to do it, but that was only after Big-N and Sony both said long before xBox that they both were makeing wireless controlers standard for their systems. If 360 had wait 1 year to launch w/PS3 and Wii they would not of gotten any creative credit like what you are giveing them. They just did what the industry was already moveing to. I remember when I got FFxi I was hearing Sony talking about not upgradeing their Onlineplay system, and that they were working on the PS3 online network that would be FREE for all users.

Posted by TheRedStar - Friday, December 28, 2007 12:40 PM
M$oft is doing what they did w/their OS takeing other people's ideas. The Trash Bin(Mac),Internet Explorer(Netscape),WinMediaPla yer(QickTime/Real),Word(Corel) , their Business solutions if i'm not mistaken was taken form watching IBM do it. Even their last 2 OSes are rip-offs of the Mac OSes you can esentialy say they are Windows/DOS versions of Macs. They are just looking at lucrative markets that they can jump in and use their money to gain a foot hold and dominate, and M$oft's domination is never good for any consumer.

Posted by phoenixfire360 - Friday, December 28, 2007 2:01 PM
if they do do it then hopefully they will give u the option of turning it off in a game so u can just play normally but i like the idea

Posted by dandres2001 - Saturday, December 29, 2007 10:20 PM
Will everyone stop writing that MS is somehow stealing this idea. MS made a three-axis motion controller in 1998 called the ' Sidewinder- Freestyle Pro ' for the PC.

Posted by travisimo15 - Sunday, December 30, 2007 6:04 PM
leave it to Nintendo they have it down.

So now what we all gone have to buy another 360 or do we have to send it in to get the motion update. Im being sarcastic.

Posted by aploex - Wednesday, January 02, 2008 9:04 PM
dumb add that motion sensor when they make a new 8th gen xbox,

its wasting peoples money so frustrating

Posted by mcp3 - Wednesday, January 02, 2008 11:27 PM
Im sick of all these add ons that require faitfull 360 owners to spend hella money or have to buy another 360. I may get yelled at for this but I have no problem going back to being a Playstation fan.
