X-Play Names Bioshock GOTY!

The decision is in and Bioshock has been named Game of the Year by the staff of X-Play!

The inventive first-person shooter took home 4 awards out of 16 categories. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare received 2 awards (Best Sound Design & Best Shooter), while Rock Band was awarded Best Multiplayer Game.

good the creators of bioshock really deserved this award this was one of my favorites what really got me into to this game was the gameplay,environments,compelli ng story,weapons,bosses,enemies it really hit the jackpot =]

In my own personal opinion I think Mass Effect should have won, but in the end every one of the games that were nominated were some of the best games ever. So props to you bioshock creators and keep up the good work.

I also personaly enjoyed Mass Effect alot more, im just glad COD4 didn't win game of the year. If it did , i dont think i'd ever watch x-play again lol.

bioshock is poooo! wow, i can't believe that bioshock won this year, and gears of war last year... 2 crappy games, all exclusives on one crappy CONSOLE. I am a pc gamer mainly, and these games suck. Call Of Duty 4 should definitely have won. Great multiplayer, and good single player. Fun game. I have it for both PS3 and PC, the PC version is better in my opinion though. Oh well, hopefully a good game will win next year.

I'm glad that Bioshock won. Personally, Super Mario Galaxy was my favorite, but Bioshock came in a close second in my book, so I'm fine with their decision. By the way Tribute, last year X-Play picked The Legend Of Zelda: Twlight Princess as game of the year. Gears of War won G4oria 2007, which is picked by the viewers. I picked Zelda.

I'm glad to see Bioshock getting the respect it deserves. The only complaint anyone can give is that it didn't have MP. Fine ok, it didn't. You know what? It gave the best single player mode I've played since the original Half Life in 1998. That's why it won. Nothing else that came out this year was even in the same league as the world of Bioshock and Rapture.

Mass Effect is fantastic but it is simply too buggy to be worth it. And Saren isn't built up enough to be a character you like or hate. He's just kind of there. If Bioshock didn't come out this year, I'd give it to Mass Effect hands down, but that's just not the case. Mass Effect 2 will probably get it though and rightfully so.

I agree with a few people that Mario Galaxy was an underdog that maybe deserves it. What keeps me from supporting it is that the levels are so short. Each level I played I beat in 3-5 minutes. That's just not enough time for me to enjoy myself in a given level.

how did PACMAN beat Crackdowns expansion letalone The Shivering Iles ( Oblivion which was 06 GOTY's expansion)

Props to Bioshock even if ive never played it.

I didn't even watch, Halo 3 didn't get anything? Ok my respect level for X-Play just went way up. It's Halo 2 with shinier graphics and Halo 1's ending. It did nothing new, nothing special, it didn't even do anything perfectly. Bioshock did and that's why it won. Halo 3 should have won one award and one award only: most overhyped/overrated game of all time. Thank you X-Play and G4 in general for finally getting it right.

OK people i know there are Halo Haters, but let me just point out that Halo 3 had great story line, great music (even better than the Halo 1&2) but not to win a single award, that is just insane, you guys must have meet Heath Ledger or something and not winning mutliplayer is beyond me (one word GRIFBALL) After a few months people will still be playing Halo with new content and maps. Sorry Morgan and Adam, you let me down, after finshing finals in college you let me down.

P.S. I thought BioShock was too repetitive with the hacking, COD 4 was better than that.

I did enjoy Bioshock quite abit more than Halo 3. I agree with Jargy, Halo 3 was a letdown, especially considering all the hype that preceded its release. It seemed much too like a suped-up Halo 2, while Bioshock was something original and well-made.
Bioshock's only real downside is the lack of online multiplayer, an area where Halo 3 does well, but the award was for game of the year, not multi-player experience.

Wow , was I the only one not overly impressed with this game or what? Sure , Bioshock took alot of the steam that Halo franchise has gotten over the years , but I didnt see anything groundbreaking about this at all. Undeserving in my book.

I like X-Play a lot. Watch it every time I get a free moment. However there seems to be a bias in favor of the XBOX.
I know that there are a lot of really cool games for the red ringer of death machine but puhleease, stop taking money from M$oft and write your own reviews based on real opinions not on how much they are paying you.

Now the devils advocate:

M$oft gives you a lot of money in advertising and such. I understand why you "like" the red ringer of death machine :)

Xwing_5, without criticizing your opinion, you might not understand the concept of the devil's advocate. You're actually supposed to take a view contrary to the one held, not just say the same thing as before. Anyway, good show- even if I didn't much like COD4 I get the wins.

So Bioshock won? Cool. I tried the demo and it wasn't for me, but it was an interesting game. I don't know what game I would have choosen, as I'm still playing Mass Effect, Halo3, Rock Band, Mario Galaxy, and many others.

this is alright

if i'd never played either i'd rather play mario, having played mario i'd rather play mario but bioshock did look pretty cool and interesting.

Wii has the best action/adventure game and i suppose you could say the best baseball game.

part of the reasons award shows choose what they choose is because they feel the game or movie deserves a wider audience.
i'm glad rock band won.

i was glad to see zack and wiki get a nomination.

halo 3 took no chances, nobody is going to mess with the formula of a game guaranteed to make that much money and that's the reason it deserves no awards.

Im just so so happy Assassin's Creed didn't win!!

Bioshock was amazing.

I love CoD4 and Halo3 but the MP on CoD4 is so much better then Halo3's.

It's the best year for gamers in a while, especially 360 owners. I think Halo should have taken best music, but it is not the best in any of the categories nominated. It did deserve to be nominated though. Bioshock is the best game I've played this year, I have to wait till Christmas to play Mass Effect and CoD4. Orange Box is sweet!

But I highly doubt that microsoft is going around paying off people like G4. They have brand recognition and 1 of the fastest most sold games in the history of gaming halo 3. xbox has the better games thats why they get the love. i just dont understand the whole halo thing maybe it is because i didnt have the original xbox so i dont have the love affair with it. just seems like a regular game no unlockables online except outfits (wow dress up for guys kinda gay)

They have the achievements that you unlock online to. And then you get the armor. Also I don't see how customizing your charater is considered gay. It just adds some to the game.

Bioshock was definitely a great game in the "Shock" family. Kudos for GOTY!

I too am glad that Halo 3 won nothing because simply the game was not that inventive or unique. I mean, you start by falling out of the sky as a fireball and living...but after that you couldn't fall 100 feet without dying. Claustrophobic and linear gameplay just offered nothing truly fun and the MP aspect...meh.

Call of Duty 4 definitely had a great story, gameplay, and absolutely a fun multiplayer game.

Yes the game got 5/5 and it indeed looks beautiful but out of all the possible choices like Mass Effect, Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, COD 4 and Super Mario Galaxy, I'm honestly shocked this one was on their radar after this fall's barrage of great games but truth be told this was indeed really hard for them to choose. Truly the best year for gaming!

I'm a Sony fanboy, obviously (see posting name), but I also happen to like the Xbox, and Bioshock should win awards, but I think that this year had other games better than that.

Looking at next year, I have high hopes and expectations for Sony and high expectations for Microsoft, and look forward to the day when I have upgraded to both the PS3 AND 360.

Also, @SonicNiGHT, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who's tired of the Console Fanboys Flaming Each Other On The Internet Forum War. Both next-gen consoles have a strong lineup next year, although Sony had some slip-ups this one.

Ass Creed? Did you decide to shorten because you're anally curious or were too lazy to type Assassin? Carpal tunnel making your left hand too stiff to type too much?

BTW,
I did laugh. Ass Creed is the kind of title that they might give to an action/adventure porn flick in the guy-on-guy section of your local Hustler. Also, you can't successfully shorten the words in game titles, but you can abbreviate the whole thing. For instance, AC would have been better.

Also: Kratos fan you rule. Your not some flaming fanboy meatsmoking ass who argues about which console is better, and i like that. I fortunately am upgrading to ps3 for christmas, i have a 360 and wii, and from what ive seen from the wii its so depressing. Im not flaming or anything but seriously i havent seen a truly great or epic game since Legend of Zelda at launch. Im really excited to play ratchet and clank tools of destruction, resistance fall of man and uncharted: drakes fortune, and im glad i waited till now, since their truly getting their great games out and the commercial is awesome.

Congradulations Bioshock, you really deserved it. The game is a near perfect mix of atmosphere, story, and action. The only thing that was holding you back from perfection was the Vita-Chambers; but since it is now possible to turn them off, though hath reached perfection.

Also; what is Time magazine huffing giving Halo 3 game of the year and calling it "perfect"????!!!
This coupled with the fact that they put Ace Combat on the top 10 has cost them their entire credibility in the gaming world (though they didn't really have it in the first place; nice first impression).

Holy crippity crappity, XBOX 360 had what has to be one of the best years in history for ANY home console. EVERY ONE of these games was amazing and worth its value in not only money but more importantly time:

I appreciate your opinion, and I'm glad to see that there are at least 2 people in this universe that agree with me. The one thing I hate, actually my motivation for creating an account so I can make posts, is people hating on 2 awesome next-gen consoles. I say 2 awesome "next-gen" consoles, because the Wii is more for casual gamers. I have played the Wii and found it to be fun, but not worth full time ownership. All the good games playable everywhere else are too hard to adapt to the control schemes available on the Wii. If a friend had one, I would play.

Seriously dude, xplays picks for their catagories were prime bullshiz. Bioshock GOTY?? MY ASS! Seriously, Best FPS shouldve been Call of Duty 4, GOTY shouldve been Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction. Xplay just followed what spike said so they wouldnt have to do any work deciding anything. By the way i dont know if you've played any playstation 3 games at all, but you'd know sony is making a comeback with Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted and Warhawk. Im not flaming 360, its just that xplay seriously wrong in a lot of catagories.
