Is 'Rock Band' PS2 Compatible With PS3s?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, December 14, 2007 2:00 PM

TheFeed approves of the PlayStation 2 version of Rock Band, but we were left with a few questions, so we talked to  Harmonix's PR Coordinator John Drake to get the scoops.

First off, is the PlayStation 2 version playable on PlayStation 3's? Like, say you have a PS2, with plans for buying a PS3 in the future. Would it make sense to buy Rock Band for your current system, with an eye toward still playing it your future system? Or should you just wait it out?

"The PS2 game was developed and tested for the PS2, not to be emulated on the PS3. So you know, play it in that way at your own risk," Drake said.

We also noted that the guitar effects were missing from the PS2 version of the game. "The guitar effects choice was made to streamline the work of the audio processors of the PS2. Changes like this help keep game play smooth and use the system to the best of its abilities," Drake said.

Thanks, Harmonix. You guys are rock.

the way it sounds if you are going to do it it would probably work best on a 20 or 60 GB ( where it has ps2 hardware built in) not the 80 GB 40- is excluded due to it being dumb and not playing ps2 games.

"play it in that way at your risk"....hhmm..sounds like he almost wants you to try it so that you can blow up ur PS3 and have to buy a new one. I wonder why they even bothered making it for PS2. Rock Band would've been a great system pusher if they kept it to next-gen consoles only.

Was that sarcasm? My guess is YES.

"play it in that way at your own risk"?? I'm guessing that if you play it on the PS3 it will tell your the secret of life... Or possibly another 'Hot Coffee' scandal. Either way I'd be happy.

vismortis - I'm thinking you don't get it. What the article is trying to say. Don't think that the guitar is going to work on the PS3 version of Rock Band when you upgrade from a PS2 to a PS3. It's not really talking about the backwards compatibility more so than it talks about you having to either wait till you buy a PS3 and then buy the PS3 version of Rock Band. So, upgrade you system and buy that version of Rock Band.

Im actually gonna vouch for yes im one of the many/few? who dont have a PS3 yet, but i did get the PS2 special edition and the box the drums came in said "Rock Band PS3 Drums" on it. So that tells me that its all compatible, given you will definately have to but the PS3 version of the game, but the Guitar, Drums and MIC will most likely work fine. PLUS the D-Pad on the guitar and Drums dont work on the ps2, but im sure there were put there for a reason... PS3? Perhaps, but im gonna Say YES!!!
