Nintendo Takes Wii Raincheck

Posted by Frank Meyer - Friday, December 14, 2007 11:42 AM

During a press conference call this morning, Nintendo introduced a program called the Wii Raincheck that they hope will help holiday supply shortages.

Consumers who purchase an out-of-stock Wii on Dec. 20 or Dec. 21 with the full payment of $249.99 will receive a Wii rain check certificate (while supplies last). This certificate guarantees them a Wii system some time in January. These Wii systems must be picked up by Jan. 29.

The Wii Raincheck will be available only through GameStop, who has tens of thousands of the certificates.

"A certificate needs to be matched to a specific Wii which needs to be matched to a specific store,” says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. “Only this retailer has the ability to pull off such a program.”

Fils-Aime added that the Wii will be available this weekend at many retailers, including Best Buy and Circuit City, and that Nintendo regrets that supply is falling short of demand for the Wii.

I wouldn't trust this reincheck system at all. So, what happens if you don't pick it up by Jan 29? They keep your money?

probably. that's why there's a deadline. and that's why this could be a horrible idea.

i think people are buying this thing strictly on hype now

Nintendo's reign is in check.... reigncheck...
By the way: Wii is by far the best console.

well why wouldn't you pick it up by january 29??

i think it's a pretty good idea...

Due to the demmand sounds like a smart idea. Besides, its not like you wouldn't have the time in a month to go to the store and get your wii.

This seems like a pretty good idea. =D

Except, what if you don't go to get your Wii? If they keep your money then I would most likely not even risk it. What if something happens? Not sure what could happen that would cause you to not be able to go to the store for a whole month, but whatever.

Of course it's a good idea. It's much better than having to camp outside a store for it.
Now noone can say that Nintendo is not trying to do something about the shortage.

Hmmmm.... just what I always wanted for Christmas!!! A $249.99 piece of paper that doesn't play any games other than tic-tac-toe.

think people how can they keep your money? you give them money for an item if said item is not delivered they return said money. its called goods and services and its how a free market works give your heads a shake nintendo is not just gonna say haha we keep your money and your wii so sorry to bad.

holy class action suits batman!

That's sorta coo, but why does it have 2 b only on 1/29? I smell a rip-off.

Yeah...this isn't going to be good. If I remember correctly, Gamestop is pretty bad about giving people's reserves away to others if they're yelled at enough. I see a lot of failed notification and poor communication happening with this. I also see a handful of forgetful, post-holiday stressed out parents forgetting about this until they clean out the drawer they saved the rain check in. Overall, this is a bad idea.

U bastards better not come to my store. just leave me alone with ur hopeless attempts to get ur grubby hands on my wiis!!!! lol

Gamestop sucks.

What the hell is so hard about manufacturing a Wii?
Nintendo is selling a lot of them anyway, but this could be one of the largest wasted opportunities by a company in history. Think about how many they could sell if they had the inventory on hand. But then again, it's possible that if they were more readily available, they might not be as highly sought after.

Gee, why can't the average consumer get a Wii? Frankly, I believe there are PLENTY of Wiis- That is, if EBay Didnt exist... Come on! Have you been on there- there are people with like 100 Wiis stacked in there living rooms-How in Great Gatsbys ghost did they get those?- by legal means?...yeah right

I don't understand how people are so hard up on getting a Wii. I find it to be a kids system. I love my hardcore games, kids are going to grow out of that system really fast, the game lineup is horrible, the Wiimote idea is just a fad. I understand why it out sells the other systems, just like kids movies outsell major motion pictures. The Wii is like the Mac vs. PC. Not at all like the PS3 or 360 so I really don't care how many systems they sell, Wii is not in the same category. It’s the GameCube with a touch of better graphics. Sorry Nintendo kids, my opinion. Wii sports is cute, not like OMG I need this. If you feel like you have to have the Wii, the rain check idea is great. Remember, you are paying money on a product you don’t have in your hand. Do it at your own risk, my advice - Wait till they get more in instead of doing the rain check… The worst that can happen is that the employee miss place your rain check. Remember, people do make mistakes when it gets busy.

Sounds good on paper but it will fail terribly ,and i see a lawsuit in Nintendo's near future.

That would seem like it would work. . . I mean getting your kid a piece of paper for Christmas instead of a Wii, but eventualy this will work out. For those who are too lazy to pick up thier Wii I think Gamestop has to give thier money back. They better be making certificates so you can't just throw one in the scanner and get a free Wii.

Two things:
1. Every time I look on Craig's List or Backpage there are several Wii's for sale or trade.
2. It really makes no sense that Nintendo can't produce enough Wii's.

Yeah, just what every little kid wants to find under the tree on Christmas morning - a raincheck.
