Epic Fail Thursday: Music Failures

Posted by Frank Meyer - Thursday, December 06, 2007 1:51 PM

TheFeed is proud to present the second installment of Epic Fail Thursday, our weekly feature that brings you the greatest failures in the world of videogames, popular culture and technology. We're not talking run-of-the-mill defeat here; Epic Fail Thursday is reserved for the top of the bottom: Grand-scale fiascos only.

Why Thursday? Because that’s the failingest day of the week: It’s not Friday, even though it feels like it. Fail!

Today’s Epic Fail: Recent Music

There’s been oh-so-many failures in music in recent years, it’s hard to even keep track. Some might say rock sucking so hard these days is a failure in of itself. Others would argue hip hop has been failing us for years. But we say it’s less about the genres letting us down, and more about the individual performers screwing up and dragging us down with them. Here are some choice high and lowlights of music failures that come to mind:

10) Spice Girls reunion – It will do well attendance-wise, but fail artistically.

9) Britney Spears 2007 MTV Awards “comeback” performance – She blew it. Was she as fat as everyone says? No, not really by any normal girl’s standards. Was her song atrocious? Not any worse than every other piece of crap that night. Did she look horrible? Well, she’s not as hot as before, but she’s still cute. Did she make a major misstep? Hey, she didn’t fall on her face. Problem is, the whole appearance was a misstep because she didn’t bother to rehearse or get her chops back up. She kinda just looked like a zombie out there, which is a far cry from the Brit of yesteryear.

8) Gary Cherone fronting Van Halen Mach III – Getting the guy from Extreme who sang that horrible “More Than Words” ballad was about the worst idea Eddie Van Halen ever had. Thank God Diamond David Lee Roth came back into the fold and they have launched a successful comeback tour, or the mighty VH would be over by now.

7) Method Man and Redman’s sitcom – How can two funny dudes with sooooo much charisma make such an unfunny, craptacular show? Let FOX develop it, that’s how!

6) Eve’s sitcom – Ditto…except she doesn’t have much charisma…just good looks. But after 5 minutes, does anyone wanna watch a good looking girl read off cue-cards…poorly (see Pam Anderson’s Stacked)?

5) David Lee Roth as a radio DJ – No one loves the Diamond One more than us, and on paper this sounded like a great idea….but it wasn’t. That paper lied.

4) Jay-Z’s “comeback” album Kingdom Come– It was hard to really even deem this a comeback album since he was soooo in our faces as a record executive and via a slew of high profile guest appearances, but that’s what everyone called it…and that’s why it sucked. As a one-time miss in a canon full of hits, it ain’t no big deal (he’s already redeemed himself with American Gangster), but as an album he was balancing his return to hip hop on, it was a pretty ho-hum effort.

3) Rock Star Supernova – We're not sure why it made us so happy that the made-for-TV supergroup Rock Star Supernova failed so miserably in both record sales and concert attendance, but it did. Maybe it was because winner Lucas Rossi seemed like such a douchebag? Maybe it was because cocky Tommy Lee needed to be knocked down a few notches? Maybe it was because the once-cool Dave Navarro is such tool now. No matter though, we wanted it to tank, and tank it did. God loves us.

2) The music biz ignoring file sharing until it was too late – Funny how the music biz acted like file sharing and the digital revolution was no big deal until it was too late, and then overreacted by suing everyone and their mother (literally!) retroactively for sharing music…from all the way back when it wasn’t even illegal to do so! Bottom line is, the music biz needs to reevaluate how it makes money or will cease doing so. And it ain’t our job to figure it out for you, or guess ahead of time as to what you will suddenly decide is illegal. We’re willing to buy it…but even more willing to steal it!

1) Amy Winehouse’s every move since Back To Black was released – Yes, despite making an incredible sophomore album that instantly propelled her to fame, this beehive babe appears to be more concerned with snorting blow, shooting junk, fighting with her loser boyfriend, and generally spitting her success back in our face than, say, making it through a concert or remembering her own lyrics. She’s the female Sid Vicious with far more talent and far less charisma.

What recent music failures did we miss? Sound off below.

Emo! And the fact that My Chemical Romance is one of the most popular bands in the charts. BS!

Posted by tedcwilliams - Thursday, December 6, 2007 2:20 PM

You mentioned David Lee Roth's radio show, but what about his bluegrass album? That was abysmal at best.

Posted by JDarkley - Thursday, December 6, 2007 2:28 PM

Yeah, what about emo? There's the downfall popular music right there.

Posted by milhouse91 - Thursday, December 6, 2007 2:30 PM

Let me correct you, Eve does not have good looks. Her mouth is all crooked.

Posted by jargy1 - Thursday, December 6, 2007 2:34 PM

I say the big Epic Fail right now is TheFeed actually saying Amy Winehouse has talent. Or thinking Jay Z has ever had an ounce of talent.

Posted by Elbowskin - Thursday, December 6, 2007 2:35 PM

come on guys its cool to wear your sisters jeans and make up right?

Posted by Hulkout80 - Thursday, December 6, 2007 2:44 PM

Pete Dorhety's mutiple stints in rehab. I actually don't even know if this guy is a real musician. I am pretty sure he just got his masters in drug consumption and drug theory. And also I see Amy Winehouse's FAIL as a triumph for all of humanity. It's all about the way you look at it.

Posted by TGray - Thursday, December 6, 2007 2:45 PM

How about the fact that the meaning of rock has changed from actual quality music to a bunch of high pitched Douches singing about the hardships of being a teenager. Rockers must rise again and restore music to its former glory

Posted by liquisoft - Thursday, December 6, 2007 3:28 PM

Thrusday? Talk about fail.

Posted by sjohnson - Thursday, December 6, 2007 3:31 PM

Mavis Beacon is the real failure.

Posted by Ghost_Deini - Thursday, December 6, 2007 3:34 PM

jargy1 is a dunce, if he thinks jay-z does'nt have talent, your just a hater, even to mention amy the girl i never even heard of Winehouse to the jiggy man! if you don't like hip hop or rap keep your mouth shut about things you know nothing about!

Posted by bossbetty - Thursday, December 6, 2007 3:44 PM

How about when every genera of music is overly produced and no real instruments are played at all in the song, then when they make the video they act like they're playing their instruments all hard! There isn't even a guitar being played though out the whole song why are you doing it to death in the video?

Oh, when rapper stop and laugh in the middle of their songs like they said something clever. Because people you pay laugh at your jokes doesn't make you a comedian to the rest of us. Young Jezzy Ha Haaah! Or Jay Z Party life " I said I'll spit game at you in a (some type of car)" Like just rap, MF stop pausing!

I hate interludes on albums! That all I have to say about that.

Michael jackson up in that tree was another sad day in music.

Dumbass one hit wonder hip hop of the south and t-pain and akon's ugly asses being on ever single. They're so ugly my TV oozes black ink after they appear.

Posted by bossbetty - Thursday, December 6, 2007 3:45 PM

Beyonce busting her lip was funny but sad because she is not perfect anymore. That was the only thing she had going for her.

If i hear you're gonna love me one more time I will hold hostages!

Snoop dog having a reality show about his family seems okay but I don't care about everyone's boring ass life. Salt & Pepa is a great show! But Gotti needs to stop and get ja rules balls back from 50 cent which Kanye is holding on to now. Follow me (50 lost to Kanye)?

All of the planned hip hop beefs all involving the game somehow. The Boondocks said it all! Hit him with the henessayy!!

Chappelle show still the funniest show on tv even though it's hasn't made a new episode in over 3 years.

106 & park why is it still on? Does J.i.m Jones have AIDS? Did he get it from Cam Ron? Did that go Too Far? You be the judge. - I'm out and still the boss b!tches!!

Posted by Jubilantgravestone - Thursday, December 6, 2007 3:51 PM

Just the fact that singers and rappers are trying to act, when they sure as hell can't.

Posted by jaychuck - Thursday, December 6, 2007 5:34 PM

how about stop listening to popular music if you don't want to. if emo is popular, how does that affect you, other than listening to it yourself? listen to what you want to. thats the freedom of searching for your own music and discovering new artists.

Posted by d0nKishote - Thursday, December 6, 2007 5:55 PM

Trent Reznor's post on the Nine Inch Nails website today pretty sums everything up...

"While the music industry is doing everything they possibly can to go out of business, can we all make sure to rid ourselves of the Grammys, too? Out of touch old men jacking each other off.
ENOUGH!

Have a nice day."

Go get 'em, Trent...

Posted by TheKei - Thursday, December 6, 2007 6:27 PM

jaychuck said it all.
Personally, I can't think of a time when there was better music and more talent then there is now. Stop listening to the radio.

Posted by jargy1 - Thursday, December 6, 2007 7:11 PM

Liking hip hop and rap doesn't automatically mean you like Jay Z. I'd like him a lot, if he had talent. End of discussion.

Posted by johnsprogram - Thursday, December 6, 2007 8:01 PM

Don't forget hoobastank. One hit wonder, crappy CD.

Posted by Argama - Thursday, December 6, 2007 8:09 PM

What about William Hung? That guy is an insult to music (and humanity). Clearly he's blessed with Devil's Luck.

Posted by Ps3nation - Thursday, December 6, 2007 8:14 PM

Biggest console failure XBox 360 for it's 30%+ failure rate and not doing anything to fix the problem until it was to late. The nail in the coffin is almost set 2008 PS3 will be king and Xbox will be third with already pending law suits and customers wanting their money back Microsoft will have to pull out soon and from what I'm hearing it doesn't look to good for Gates. Have you seen the Conan Obrian and Gates special on youtube wow! It's over sorry guys.

Posted by SonicNiGHT - Thursday, December 6, 2007 8:55 PM

Zergham...does that have like...anything to do with what we're talking about? Seriously man. Go hawk your bs somewhere else.

Anyway, yea, Rock music needs to stop sucking lately. The only album I've heard that was halfway decent as of late was the latest fricken Nickelback album that was released in January. The Linkin Park album was a big pile of phail. I mean...seriously...I was born in 1988 and most of the music I grew up with sucks. I'll say it right now.

Posted by Hulkout80 - Thursday, December 6, 2007 9:30 PM

Nickelback... Ewwww. But whatever, like what you want SonicNight. Even though I think, at some point trying to seperate every band into a genre is just stupid, people who are seeking good "rock" start listening to punk(NOFX,Dropkick Murphys, Strung Out, A Whilhelm Scream), Metal/hardcore(Every Time I Die, Protest the Hero, At the Gates, Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me). Or how about check out some local bands around you. Now there is an idea! As for rap/hip hop Wu-tang and Aesop Rock, thats all you need.

Posted by arod95 - Thursday, December 6, 2007 10:15 PM

Ghostface has been dropping nothing but gems for the past 2 years straight. Kweli just made his best album since Train of thought, and the roots "game Theory" is their best album since Things Fall Apart...so everything isnt all bad with music lately.

Posted by Tufferz - Friday, December 7, 2007 12:15 AM

i think you're all overlooking something.

"Mavis Beacon is the real failure."

sjohnson you make me so happy sometimes.

Posted by SCPRedMage - Friday, December 7, 2007 1:50 AM

From BEFORE music sharing was illegal? What are you people smoking?

File-sharing = LEGAL

Sharing copyrighted material = ILLEGAL

And it's ALWAYS been that way; copyright law didn't just suddenly magically apply. It was NEVER legal to pass around copyrighted music.

But, agreed, the way the RIAA has handled the situation = EPIC FAIL.

Posted by Jedihunter15 - Friday, December 7, 2007 5:25 AM

First off bossbetty, comedy central CANCELLED the chapple show, but thats an EPIC FAIL by its self.

The real bad thing is the fact that much of the rap music, mainly southern, sounds the same. Thier are still some good rappers out their, but their mainly the ones that are yet to be discovered. Heck, i still listen to 80's rap. Its better than whats out today.

I even like some of the rock music, though i cant really understand what they are saying.

Posted by nyadt - Friday, December 7, 2007 6:15 AM

Sid Vicious?! I haven't heard that name since 1997! Speaking of Epic Failures what about American Idol?! -shudders- If I wanted to see dumbasses sing badly, I'd go to my family reunion!

Posted by RPG_Worshipper - Friday, December 7, 2007 7:31 AM

This is why I listen to Christian Harcore. It only gets better. Lyrically, musically; it's very good stuff and every new release seems to better then the last...if you're a hardcore fan anyways.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, see: Chasing Victory - "Fiends", The Chariot - "The Fiancee", and Norma Jean - "Redeemer". Good stuff. Gooood stuff.

Posted by RPG_Worshipper - Friday, December 7, 2007 7:35 AM

Also, Marilyn Manson blew it with his latest CD "Eat Me, Drink Me". The concept of a German man eating and drinking an entirely family (true story) was somewhat interesting, but his music is emo. Also, he wastes an entire song singing about My Chemical Romance and their inability to "be the shizz that he is".

Anyways, it's official. The anti-Christ Superstar is dead.

If you put meat through a factory - hamburger is going to come out. If you want finely crafted music - you'd better stop looking at chart toppers, music awards and iTunes. Think of the new bands you like - look on facebook/myspace and see if those bands have bands they like.

Posted by neonchez - Friday, December 7, 2007 9:37 AM

how about Radioheads new album? that was a pretty epic failure.

@TheKei
i agree. it's funny the ppl who listen to the over produced noise that gets played on the radio can't figure out why the music sucks.

you guys can keep LP and Nickelback. give me a song w/ acoustic guitars and hand claps.

Posted by Hulkout80 - Saturday, December 8, 2007 11:06 AM

@ RPG_Worshipper hahahahahahahaha. christian hardcore? wow! hardcore is influenced greatly from metal, and metal is dark and brutal. how is christian hardcore supposed to be dark and brutal. the christian "hardcore" bands are probably pretty talented but they are going against what alot of that genre is all about. One the metal gods Slayer, their lead singer and bassist Tom Araya believes that "...Christ came and taught us about love, about doing unto others. That was his preach: Accept each other for who we are. Live peacefully, and love one another." You can still be a metal or a hardcore band and be christian but when you try to further your religion through hardcore music, that is not hardcore, that is choir music buddy.

Posted by TheKei - Saturday, December 8, 2007 1:44 PM

As I Lay Dying rips it up.

Posted by LuisRich - Saturday, December 8, 2007 10:47 PM

Um you forgot 50 cent's much anticipated, sep 11 debuting, album which just sucked ecspecially compared to Kanye west's graduation

Posted by SonicNiGHT - Sunday, December 9, 2007 1:20 AM

lol uhh..I was talking about recent albums. Not the stuff I listen too on a daily basis. I mean, my favorite band atm is neither Linkin Park nor Nickelback, I've been listening to Children of Bodom almost exclusively. If you wanna kill some sh^t in a videogame, that's the music that you need to rock out to.

Posted by Stopher2069 - Saturday, December 22, 2007 9:54 PM

The best Rap was Ganster-Rap... that ended @97....Tru, No Limit... Hard Ship (no bad words).... Now Rap is a bunch of water down Bull.... Give me some all that remans And Killswich.... oh and if u get a chance look up All my Friends are Dying on myspace...
