Dreamcast 2 In The Works?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, December 06, 2007 7:54 AM

We loved the Dreamcast as much as anyone, but we seriously doubt we'll ever see a next-gen version. The market is crowded enough as it is. Still, the rumor on the nets is a Dreamcast 2 might be coming. A trademark application on the name "Dreamcast" was filed by SEGA in August, and since then the rumors have been percolating.

The application reads:

"Home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs".

Yeah, sure, SEGA is almost certainly just keeping their ownership of the "Dreamcast" name, but some think the addition of flash memory cards, floor pads and other info not included in the original trademark filing point to a new console.

We're gonna say "very, very doubtful." But we've been wrong before, and speculation is free and fun.

I highly doubt it.

If they do it will fail.

Finally something to bring Sony and Microsoft to their knees! Mwhahahahaha!

Posted by Tmidiman - Thursday, December 06, 2007 8:23 AM
Sony: Oh hell no! Not another system to compete with.

Panasonic 3DO 2?

Posted by VariousObjects - Thursday, December 06, 2007 8:53 AM
This would be awesome if they released it after this generation of consoles.

Posted by colourings - Thursday, December 06, 2007 8:59 AM
Don't tease me like this, The Feed. I'd sell every console I own for DC2.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, December 06, 2007 9:06 AM
They have basically signed away the rights to all of theri games right? I would love to see another dreamcast. I would prefer to buy a dreamcast 2 over a 360 or ps3. And they do not even exist. Now that is impressive.

Posted by staychisel - Thursday, December 06, 2007 9:07 AM
hopefully they do release one and then xbox 360, dreamcast 2 and the wii will reing supreme.

Posted by hetman - Thursday, December 06, 2007 9:08 AM
And for the people who are like What about the 3do, Jaguare. Those systems are garbage when compared to the greatness that was the dreamcast. I do not trust anyones opinions on games unless they have or had a dreamcast.

DC2 would fail like the orginial. If I was Sega I would just keep making software not hardware

Posted by smh_theory - Thursday, December 06, 2007 9:21 AM
if this dropped a few years before sony, microsoft, or nintendo were able to make a rebuttal it could be a serious contender... that said it would also be just another console to to play the same games on because exclusivity is going the way of the dodo.

Posted by Letters2Kay - Thursday, December 06, 2007 9:34 AM
Ooooooohhh... I'm all tingly.

Posted by mattlee88 - Thursday, December 06, 2007 9:35 AM

I have been praying to satan for this day. I gave up on praying to god for this when Sega of Japan pulled the plug on the Original.

Posted by Curare - Thursday, December 06, 2007 9:52 AM
Sega can retake the market. with the right price and software help. The game market has become stale if you hadn't noticed. Sega could bust through the side door with a good price and wacky titles like Seaman, Jet Grind Radio, and so on. I don't know about you, but I see this as a real opprotunity to shake up an industry which is becomming at this time content with sequals and clones. Sega was alwayse known for titles which differentiated from the norm. Expect big things if Sega plays it right and makes a back breaking effort to win!

Say whatever you want about Sega's Dreamcast & how it failed & so on. If this baby EVER gets made the big 3 better look out because it will DEFINITELY be a hot item hands down. Especially if it supports full BC.

Don't forget fellas, there are STILL developers making games for the original.

It's really kinda coincidental because me and a buddy of mine were just playing House Of The Dead 2 on it 2 weeks ago...

Posted by GameMasterNick - Thursday, December 06, 2007 10:04 AM
Most of the original Dreamcast development crew now works for Microsoft on the Xbox line. Most likely, TheFEED is dead on about this just being a hold/renewal of rights as opposed to a new console line. That, or they could be attempting to use the name for peripherals for other consoles, etc. at the same time.

Posted by binary_one - Thursday, December 06, 2007 10:04 AM
Sega will have to win this one on the strength of their first-party exclusives, which would undoubtedly be led by Sonic... and given how lame the most recent Sonic game for 360 was, they're going to need some help.

I wax nostalgic on my DC which I still own... spent plenty of hours playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on it.

Posted by X_Complication - Thursday, December 06, 2007 10:09 AM
Most people who never owned/played a DC don't understand. It is truly the greatest system to ever die. Imo a DC2 with full BC would be serious business.

Posted by X_Complication - Thursday, December 06, 2007 10:11 AM
Yet even if really do just so happen to be making one it would be at least a year or two before we saw it, let alone decent launch titles.

Posted by Iblis_trigger - Thursday, December 06, 2007 10:27 AM
If there was a Dreamcast 2, I doubt the PS2 will stand a chance against it now. LOL Plus if it does happen, it will most likely be competition against the Wii, while the PS3 and 360 compete against each other. I'd love it if there was Shenmue 3 but because I never did play Shemnue 2 because of the death of the 1st Dreamcast, it's not really so good (for me) since it's all once continuous story.

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, December 06, 2007 12:19 PM
one of my Dreamcasts are already turning yellow... LOL

Posted by cryfordawn - Thursday, December 06, 2007 2:12 PM
My guess the feed is wrong again on this rumor as they usually are. We all remember the ghostbusters story that was like HEY guess what a ghostbusters game might be coming. And the next day an article that says HEY its really almost done.

It would be nice to see a Dreamcast 2, however I doubt we will. Sega is doing so much better making games for other systems. Love my dreamcast, and would be part 2 if one came out.

Posted by Roy2008 - Thursday, December 06, 2007 2:20 PM
Okay? why would they?
Playstation 1 Put them in the drain! and waiting this long to try again, will only lead to failure agn. Theres no way you can compete with these next gens

Posted by hetman - Thursday, December 06, 2007 2:20 PM
@cryfordawn it is not even a rumor. They just filed for some patents. It could be for anything. It is all just speculation right now.

Posted by GreenQuadrant - Thursday, December 06, 2007 2:51 PM
If this is real, I'd buy in a heart beat.

Posted by Zergham - Thursday, December 06, 2007 6:33 PM
If the dreamcast 2 comes out that is the end of Microsoft people are already buying PS3's in droves becasue of the failure of microsoft to make a reliable system that actually works. I don't think microsoft will like being in 4th place after the D2 comes out.

Posted by Tufferz - Friday, December 07, 2007 12:27 AM
man, you guys waste no time at all making predictions about how its going to fare in the market. all sega did was file for some patents.

i love my dreamcast as much as the next guy, but don't count on it happening.

Posted by bergmark2007 - Friday, December 07, 2007 6:32 AM
I still play my dreamcast every month. I'm a loyal fan to the dreamcast and I will abandon any system to get a new dreamcast!

Posted by modeandmodus - Friday, December 07, 2007 12:44 PM
please, SEGA, please. a little piece of me dies every time i tell people "oh, sure, i'm happy that SEGA is just a software developer now." and D2 better have that evil little orange triangle on it. . .!!

Posted by SaroorHai - Friday, December 07, 2007 5:34 PM
I wonder if it cold be a new handheld? It seems unlikely with he dance pads included in the patent, but who knows. I can only hope like everyone else.

Posted by psychobaka - Saturday, December 08, 2007 3:26 AM
I digged the Dreamcast, but I think Sega is doing just fine and dandy as a software developer. Don't get your hands itchy for a color-disply VMU anytime soon...

Posted by SonicExplosion - Monday, June 16, 2008 10:22 PM
Hey, we all doubted Sonic for Brawl and look where he is at. It's kinda doubtable, but hey it's SEGA.
