Indie Game: Google Image Labeler

Posted by Derek Snowden - Tuesday, November 20, 2007 5:53 PM

You never met a meta-game like this.  Google Image Labeler pairs you with a random online partner and an equally random image, and you fire off as many descriptive keywords as possible in two minutes.  If any of your words matches your partner's words, you are both awarded points.  The game is surprisingly fun and challenging...and if you're as viciously dull as some of us are, your head may ache.

The upshot for Google (and everybody else, supposedly) is an improved Image Search function.  Well, it beats not paying interns to do it.

In an effort to conform to popular pressure from commenters, here's a link to Google Image Labeler

Kevin,

Please don't recruit idiots to perform free work for Google. Clearly, Google wants their images tagged so their image service can dominate the other image search services. Putting it in the form of a game and then having you guys promote it is not only an obvious kissing of Google's ass, but it's totally beyond the pale of any acceptable, responsible conduct for someone in an influential position or a network with an army of wannabes and idiots to manipluate as you wish.

Check yourself, friend. Remember who your friends are and who got you here. It sure wasn't Google, was it? No, it's the chumps whom you're recruiting to do Google's work for free tyhat put this network on the map.

Don't blow it by trying to pull a fast one on your base. -Bill

All,

Don't tag Google's images for them. Please, people, act like you've got some sense and don't let any cute-faced morons here or anywhere else tell you what's cool. Obviously they'll steer you wrong and even use you to make points with their corporate peers -- Google, in this particular case.

Hey, don't get mad or freak out. That's just the reality of how things work when stocks go public. Nothing personal.

To above posters- What's wrong with corporate sponsorship? That's what keeps business going, for example G4 promotes Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo on a daily basis but does anyone complain about it? Of course not, because we all love their products (if we didn't, we wouldn't watch this channel). If google wants to have the best immage search engine out there, why should we complain about it? If you don't like it, don't do it. Some people might find their little game fun, and so there is nothing wrong with what G4 is doing, on the contrary I say promote on, and continue to bring us the great services you bring us.

I think you should refresh on your economics. Obviously you were playing spiro during class. If a compnay wants to be the best in a capitolist society such as our why not let them. Its only to better serve the users of the internet...which is everyone except my parents!

You talk as if you are responsible for Kevin getting to his current job. Im sure he went to school and worked at lame broadcasting companies untill he reached G4.

3rd
I have come across your type many times before. You clame your roots in old school. You are the master of all games(especially beatin 11yo in halo3). You are not Jenova so come down off that. You may be a gamer but a disrespectful one at that, and your comment deserves no credit or attention.

I think google tag game is interesting...a bit dull...but what do you want for free :)

LOVE YA G4!!!

Posted by expendable - Monday, January 28, 2008 12:05 AM

LOL. As if you're actually going to be tagging images of cheerleaders -- and drunken ones at that! Right.

Add the elusive 'DRUNKEN' tag to 'college cheerleaders' and you win!

Please.

There's nothing wrong with G4 promoting the products we use. I like watching G4 and checking out the new products too. I'm saying they should be smart and leave this type of promoting on the Internet, where black hat trickery is common.

G4 is losing credibility every time they run that commercial promoting this whacked-out Googlesmack.

Oh, BTW: If you tag ONE drunken cheerleader image, I'll kiss your butt. (Ain't gonna happen fella. Dream on.)

leve99,

Olivia doesn't like liars.

Frankly, I'm embarassed for you.

:D

Kevin,

I'm calling shenanigans!

This campaign of yours to sell us out is an EPIC FAIL.

LOL! I win.

Olivia,

Finally, a real man has arrived at G4! About time, huh? Did you see how I just kicked Kevin's butt and, on a whim, your whole network too? Damn, I'm good.

You'd better jump on this real quick, before I get bored and stroll over to X-play. I'm sure Morgan's forgotten what a real man is like too, hanging around with Adam all day. :D

bobby126,

Don't be a twit. You remind me of someone with a classic "spoiler" personality. Clearly you realize our beautiful Olivia would prefer me--the REAL deal--so you pridictably protest the only way you can - like a wussy. So, if you can, try to understand what business ethics demands, and the negative consequences of this sort of marketing:

(continued below...)

Posted by expendable - Monday, February 18, 2008 7:20 AM

While there is a significant amount of research investigating managerial ethical judgments, a limited amount examines consumer judgments of unethical corporate behavior and its impact on the marketplace. This study examines how consumers’ commitment to a company impacts not only their ethical judgment of corporate behavior but also the outcomes of that judgment. The authors test hypotheses with data from 334 consumers and find that consumers’ level of commitment attenuates the level of perceived fairness. More specifically, highly committed consumers may forgive companies for behaviors when perceived harm is low, but become progressively dissatisfied as the level of perceived harm increases.

(continued...)

Posted by expendable - Monday, February 18, 2008 7:23 AM

"Results of the study point to the importance of considering ethical behavior from a consumer perspective. If corporate actions are perceived as unethical, the company stands to lose favor with their most committed customers. Considering that more time, effort and investment is required to gain a new customer as to retain an old, this study shows that engaging in behavior perceived as unethical by consumers risks alienating the most committed customers."

I want to TAG other things!!! Right fellas?

Oh! Hi, Olivia - I didn't know you read this online banter. Heh heh. I'm just screwin' with Kevin's fans, that's all.

They're sooo annoying. :D

It's a complex burn. It affects them on many levels. And, oh yeah, Olivia likes bad boys.

Dear Kevin Pereira,
I have no beef with you, but i swear if i hear you talk about the Google image labeler on TV one more time, I'm gonna bite my own thumb off. It is the most overplayed advertisement i have EVER seen. Please try and get G4 to play something else once in a while.

by the way, while I'm ranting, the g4 web-site is the most PAIN-IN-THE-@$$ website to navigate.

Your mentally deranged pal, Godslayer333

I'm not Expendable. I just like the name, so I'm using it. Cuz that's how I roll, suckas. ...Problem?

Anyway...

I have to agree with the last poster. He really makes a lot of sense to me. He's very eloquent -- that was very well argued.

Shall we all agree that Kevin has to go then?

Cheers,
Ralph "that dude using Expendable's name"

Posted by expendable - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 7:58 PM

I'm not expendable either, but I think the last poster actually IS.

I mean, look at the way he writes. He thinks he's soooo funny and smarter than G4. Sure, he nailed their asses, I'll give him that. But, look, he's STILL trying to impress Olivia by punk-slappig Kevin around.

I'm telling ya, that's him! I could swear it. He's the guy.

Glad to help,
Greg

Posted by expendable - Friday, February 29, 2008 9:34 PM

I'm Expendable! You guys quit using my name!

Re: "Glad to help"

Yeah, you're helping alright. (roll eyes)

At this point, you're both totally off topic. Where is this supposed to be going, pray tell?
