Gibson Releases Robot Guitar

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, November 12, 2007 11:14 AM

Our robotic overlords have their quirks--the way their heads explode when Captain Kirk confuses their logic, the fact that they've enslaved all mankind to work in their outer space diamond mines, etc.--but it's all forgotten when the robots rock out.

So we're happy that Gibson is releasing a robotic, self tuning guitar. It will be available December 7, and will allow for single touch "standard" tuning as well as allowing for six common altered tunings.

In honor of robots rocking out, TheFeed is proud to present our incomplete list of robots who rock out. It's under the jump. Feel free to add any we forgot in our comment section.

  • Evil Bill and Ted from Bill and Ted 2.
  • Chuck E. Cheese and his Pizzatime Players
  • Country Bear Jamboree
  • Herbie Handcock's "Rock it" video
  • Kraftwerk
  • Daft Punk
  • Countless artsy "industrial" band videos from the early 90s.
  • Edgar from Electric Dreams.
  • Hal from 2001 singing "Bicycle Built For Two"
  • Dr. Avalanche, the Sisters of Mercy's drum machine
  • Robotic Lincoln from Be Be's kids
  • GlaDOS from Portal's excellent closing song
  • Vickie the robot from Small Wonder
  • Unconfirmed reports that Johnny Five sang in one of the Short Circuit movies.

I'm offended that homage was given to Chuck E. Cheese, but not the Rock-a-fire Explosion of Showbiz Pizza. I demand an apology for this outrage, sir!

A self-tuning guitar? By Gibson, of all guitar companies? I can see maybe a new upcoming company trying something like this, maybe Laguna, bringing some new useless guitar 'innovation' and of course failing miserably - but the only thing I want to know is - why?

Posted by sonicmasteraj - Monday, November 12, 2007 4:22 PM

Why isn't Bumblebee on there? His break-dance intro in the Transformers movie is reason enough to put him on the list.

Just goes to show how lazy people are getting nowadays. Anyone that plays guitar should be able to tune a guitar to any type of tuning with their eyes closed in under a minute. Soon they'll come out with player-guitars, like the player-pianos that play all by themselves.

idiots the bunch of you, yes fender did make a guitar with different tynings available, much like the line 6 variaxe BUT unlike those 2 guitars the gibson actually changes the actual tuning of the guitar and not do a "virtual tuning" ....in other words if you plug in your line 6 guitar youll hear the specific tuning but if you turn the volume down youll still hear regular tuning while the
gibson actually changes the real tuning. As far as playing goes , that has nothing to do with being able to "tune" your guitar.

Go listen to your dream theatre albums you dorks

As for auto tuning guitars, I like the idea. I think it saves artists time during concerts. Instead of changing guitars every now and then, they can just do it in a single turn. Unless of course the string breaks.

as for other bands?
Powerman 5000 during there "Tonight the Stars Revolt" Album.
The Hula Dancer that when you clap, it sings
The iPod Nano.
Bender from Futurama.
R2D2.

I loved that you included Daft Punk :) However, I was wondering if the robot from Wariowere counted? I forget his name but he should be on the list.
