Xbox Adds Parental Time Limit

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, November 07, 2007 7:47 AM

Microsoft, the Parent Teacher Association, and football superstar Jerry Rice have formed a triumvirate of power to fight crime. And by "crime," I mean kids who spend too much time playing Xbox.

To stop this scourge, Microsoft is adding a parental timer to your Xbox 360, so moms and pops can be like, "45 minutes for you, sonny, then it's time for macaroni and glitter sculptor-making." The timer works on a daily or weekly basis, with parents and/or guardians setting any limit they would like on their charges' entertainment.

Microsoft expects the news of the Family Timer to be received favorably by parents based on independent research it unveiled today that showed 62 percent of parents would welcome a tool to control the amount of time children spend using the video game consoles in their homes. Nearly 100% of latch-key gamer kids think the whole idea rots, and hope their parents won't ever find out about it, like a bad report card or something.

That's where the PTA comes in: Millions of PTA members nationwide will receive information on the fundamentals of the campaign, which encourages a "balanced approach to interactive media use" and helps "families to come to an agreement on how their children spend their screen time."

“As a leader in interactive entertainment, it’s Microsoft’s responsibility to provide parents with tools they can use to manage their children’s video gaming and online experiences, and we have made that a priority from the very start,” said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment & Devices Division at Microsoft.

My mom was one of the first people to try this out on me, limiting my gaming time to 35 minutes a day. I was okay with it at first, but then I realized I hadn't lived at home in many years, my mom doesn't know what an Xbox even is, and it's my damn job to play videogames.

That's my sad story. What about you? Do you live at home? How are your folks with you playing videogames?

Even if my parents knew about this when I was a kid....they would never have used it.....

Lets hope the childern's parents don't fine out about this.

When I was younger, just like now, I had to work for the things I wanted, and could then use them at my discretion. Now the lazy spoiled brats? Hm, dunno.

I have to agree with you here. I usually just read and don't post, but I couldn't let this one go. My parents would have never used this devise either. It's about parents teaching their kids RESPONSIBILITY. Too many parents/caregivers just want something or someone else to give their kids valuable life lessons. Regardless of your feelings toward MS, it is not their job to teach your kid responsibility. It is the job of the parent, uncle, aunt, older cousins. All of those people who have contact with the child. It takes a village to raise a child. That village should never include MS or any other company.

Ok, Please don't rip to hard on this idea. I have 2 nephews that have skills at sneaking out of bed or getting up WAY early to game or watch TV. They do it not to break the rules, but since they are bored and want to do something. My brother and his wife have to lock everything down that they do not what the kids to get into. It is not that they mind if the kids get up and watch TV, but they want to know what the kids are watching. They have come out to the kids watching a TV show that had sex commercials telling them to call 800 numbers on every break. This is but a tool. love it, hate it, use it, or not. It is only a tool.

Ha! And everyone says the Wii is the only system for children...

good no more high pitched voices on my halo!

Posted by twocows - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 9:40 AM

I'd rather just beat my kids.

This is a good move by Microsoft. It gives them proof that they "think of the children". While the media paints a different picture lots of parents are knowledgeable and would use a tool like this. There will always be idiots that jump on the games are bad bandwagon but this gives some tools to ones that aren't idiots.

@ManOfTeal Lol
well some of us have parents that love us :)

Hopefully, there will be no more children punching thier mother because they didn't get their daily 18 - hour of Halo intake as a result of this.

hopefully im the only one in my family who reads this site. PLEASE DONT ADVERTISE THIS MICROSOFT!

"This is a good move by Microsoft..."

It is also a good move for another reason...marketing. Now when those "Millions of PTA members nationwide" come into the stores during this holiday season looking to buy a game console for little Johnny, which one will, in their minds, be a safer choice to buy? The Xbox 360. Any exposure on the national level that this campaign receives will also be like free advertising for the 360, all for the minimal effort of an online software update.

Forget about parents, I hope our significant others don't find out about this.

Now Microsoft just may turn into a Gamer Widows Advacacy Group.

Posted by exilesuite - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 11:17 AM

I'd like to second twocows sentiment. The problem with this country today is that parents don't beat their children. I'm not saying burn them with hot coathangers or put them in the hospital, but parents not tanning their kids asses is why we have two generations of mostly spoiled little shirts - minus the "r" (thanks profanity filter!).

Posted by M4Dash - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 11:27 AM

good parents - probably already have limits on this types of thing.

average parents - if it too hard why bother. having to remember passwords and times and such.

bad parents - probably dont know and dont care.

unless its easy to use what prevents the child from just turning the 360 back on when the times up.

Shut up......your parents love me.....your mom does anyway.....BOOM goes the dynamite!!!!!

I have to say MS is really going for the wii crowd on this one... advertising to PTA... for one has anyone been to a PTA meeting? freaking boring... and those parents that actually pay attention in a PTA meeting don't even know what a 360 is.... anyway I guess great marketing by MS... this will give all of those "I don't give spankings or time out... I give them reflection time".... Parents a nice warm feeling inside and they'll go by a 360 (if they can figure out what it is) for christmas... then set it to 30 minutes a day lol kids will never get past the menu screen...

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 12:07 PM

Or this could back fire... if kids are smart they'll ask for a PS3 or PS2 for christmas.... lol

Posted by Chuckupman - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 12:32 PM

the 360 invades the market with tons of fun games like halo 3 gears and gta And overly controlling cristen parents strike back!

Thats the way the world works I guess microsoft just got tired of being sued.

Posted by StrongestSaiyan - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 1:01 PM

Nice that they want to offer a device that helps parents avoid doing their job. If you want the kids to stop playing, then tell them to stop. They really shouldn't expect Microsoft to bend over backwards for them.

Posted by SmokenStang302 - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 3:56 PM

I am interested in how this password (?) enabled timing system would work. Couldn't the kids just bypass it by unplugging the 360, removing the hard drive or changing the clock to a different time/time zone? Even if that doesn’t work I think MS and parents could be underestimating the kid’s ability to get around it.
When I was kid my parents had a code lock for the premium cable channels (HBO, Showtime etc) I figured it out by pretending to be asleep on the couch and watched my dad put in the code lol! Back then I was all like Showgirls and Poison Ivy: The New Seduction FTW!!!!!1!!!

Posted by 1mikeg - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 4:45 PM

The service will cost $50 to activate and $2.99 for each minute regulated.

Posted by Jroper - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 4:57 PM

wow...im a 360 fanboy and even i must agree with Bookshelf and say that the Xbox did jus get a lil gayer....im glad my mother is a techno tard....lol she'd only use this when i have bad grades....

Posted by SonicNiGHT - Wednesday, November 7, 2007 6:07 PM

I would LOL @ specific names, but most of your responses are pretty damn funny.

So LOL at all of you.

As far as I'm concerned, this is just for parents who don't want their kids playing when they fail at life. Which in my opinion, is OK.
