Freestyle 101: Mr Tan »

Rapper Mr. Tan has been in the game for a minute, having started off as part of the duo Da Phat Pak with Ms. Toi (she of Ice Cube’s “We Can Do It”) before they were both enlisted in the all-star group Militia. Alongside Lord G, Diz and Deviuz, the duo scored a major hit with the West Coast anthem “Burn” off their self-titled major label debut. A few years later they changed their name to Militia All-Stars and released the indie effort, Comin At Cha. Along the way, Tan toured as a hype man with Tash of Tha Liks, rapped alongside heavyweights such as Kool Keith, Snoop Dogg and Tyryse, and co-starred in the film Baby Boy. You can score his latest mix CD, Hey, Hey People “I’m A Party Person”, via his MySpace page.

Mr. Tangy (as he likes to call himself) was kind enough to stop by The Engine Room in Hollywood to drop some off-the-top rhymes and chat about what it takes to freestyle. He came armed with mucho energy and charm, and was a pleasure to work with. But don’t worry, it wasn’t all hugs and handshakes, the dude came hard!

Stay tuned for Freestyle 101s with Bad Boy’s B5, Gift of Gab of Blackalicious, Project Blowed’s Thirsty Fish, Trife Da God of Theodor Unit, Japan’s Tigarah, Jelly Roll, Topic and many more every Tuesday at 3 p.m. EST. Plus, check us out on MySpace, dig our behind-the-scenes photos, rant in our Forums, and enjoy beats by Messiaz
