Watts native Glasses Malone is being called the new King of the West thanks to his fiery flow, gangsta lyrics and hard as nails attitude. His gravely voice may be reminiscent of Compton’s The Game, but his intricate wordplay and street politics are more Kool G Rap than Eazy-E. In fact, Glasses was actually part of Game’s Black Wall Street clique before splitting and signing with Sony for 1.7 million dollars in 2005. However, label politics found the MC migrating to Cash Money Records via Mack 10’s Hoo-Bangin' Records. The resulting album, Beach Cruiser, is schedule for release this November. You can also catch him on the soundtrack to Madden 2007 via the Scott Storch-produced song "Right Now," and on his upcoming collaboration album with Mistah F.A.B. called The Sideshow.
Freestyle 101 was understandably stoked to get Glasses in the booth at Reef Studios in Torrance (whose Josh Achziger made the beat, by the way) when he was passing through town on a promo tour. With a laugh, he compared the hype on his debut to the hoopla surrounding Halo 3 (out the week we were shooting): “Got the streets waiting on my album like it’s Halo or something.” One listen to this dude spit though, and you’ll agree the hype is well earned. The guy can rap.
Stay tuned for future Freestyle 101s with Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship, Mr. Tan of Militia, B5, Gift of Gab of Blackalicious, Japan's Tigarah, and many more every Tuesday at 3 p.m. EST. Please visit out behind-the-scenes photo gallery, Forums, and MySpace site.
