Research Finds That Achievements = Money

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, October 16, 2007 2:55 PM

The Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) has just released their findings that Xbox 360 games with more achievements generally make more money and sell more copies.

They found "that titles that incorporate online elements into their Accomplishments generate 50% more money than those that do not."

This finding is a bit misleading, however, because not all games have online elements in the first place. It could be that people are more willing to purchase a game if it has an online element.

Furthermore, they claim that "game titles can generate up to 50% more revenue by including Accomplishments with Viral Marketing aspects (User Generated Content, Community or Customization Accomplishments)."

Again, it could just be that these games include this content, which helps drive sales. It isn't necessarily the achievements that are driving higher sales numbers.

Regardless of causality, achievements are definitely awesome and help drive people to play games more than they would without them.

TheFeed knows that we'll choose the 360 version of a game over a PS3 version because we might as well earn some sweet gamerpoints in the process.

achievements rock, yet again 360 beats ps3...

I don't think I have much use for a game that doesn't have online play in some form or another. I like to play online when the normal game gets old.

Well i think they should do a study and see how many people bought orange box for 360 rather than pc simply because of achievements, my roomate does that, if its for both systems, he will get 360, simply because of the achievements.

jamez9... lol....

Then there are poor bastards like me who live in rual areas and don't have high speed for on-line play.

Man It SUCKS

this is completely wrong, this is all coincidence not causality, games that have online playability are more popular due to replay value- but think of bad games like vampire rain or even stranglehold and good games like the darkness- they all have a great deal of online achievements and sadly they are impossible, noone has EVER been on vampire rain for me to get the online achievements and also the 20 times i tried to play stranglehold online no one was on- will someone please tell me how to get the last 200+ gamer score points? its IMPOSSIBLE if im the only person in the country online,i was on NBA live 2007 a week before 2008 came out trying to get the last of the online achievements, there were 7 people on, 7! are u kidding me?

get a clue game companies, you have to kno if your game is going to suck or not, cause i can tell within the 1st 10 minutes of playing, you spent years making it, you cant be that blind

and yes im an achievementwhore i have a gamer score of over 25,000 and ive gotten games like king kong for the easy 1000 point in a day, i usually stray away from games with online achievements because it takes much more work and time compared to any in game achievements- anything in game can be done in less time then "seriously" from gears- killing 10,000 people takes months no matter how good you are

i am not an achievementwhore, but i do find achievements cool. i actually earn them, i don't go and fix matches to get them, and i don't cheat. i just let them happen. i only have 2000ish points, yet i've played 20 games or so.

Posted by staychisel - Tuesday, October 16, 2007 5:04 PM
i love achievements. i think they provide a whole new element in gaming i've never experienced before, and i like it. sometimes they seem a little generic but other times they are very unique.

Achievement points are the dumbest trend going in gaming. Just proves what a bunch of morons there are out there buying into this piece of shameless marketing...

I must say, achievements add a lot to games, making sure you get everything you can out of the games you purchase. For example, The Darkness has a ton of achievements attainable only through its mediocre online play, so it actually gets people to go online and try it out so that they can get the points.

lol nice one i gotta remember that

jamez9 does the 9 stand for 9 years old?

i mean first comment its like ps3 sucks. have u ever played ps3 and nothing was said bout ps3 until u so just shut up. unless you own all systems you cant say anything because you probably have to ask mommy for a ps3 next year for christmas or your bday so just shut up.

For those of you who don't know, the pc version does have achievements. Valve has introduced a new community and achievements are a part of it. They are the exact same achievements that are on the 360 version.

Best thing about the PC version is Dedicated servers.

I was talking about Orange Box in my last post.

I'm not much of an achievement guy, I find them not rewarding at all. They are more of a bragging rights thing and I can earn my bragging rights by just playing better. Thats just my two cents.

Posted by M4Dash - Tuesday, October 16, 2007 7:59 PM
what bogus findings without any real statistical data to back it up. more achievements = better reviews = more copies sold = better game?

so many variables to consider. why not just make the same game with 1000 achievements at 1 pt each, as you are sure to sell this game over the game with 1 achievement for 1000 pt.

i think better games are just gonna sell better regardless of the amount of achievements and making this correlation is a waste of time.

I have a 360 a I HATE the stupid Achievements thing. Of course, I don't play it online.

Posted by colourings - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 4:10 AM
Achievements are only unlocked if you're online? I did not know that. Achievements = Replayability. I purchased SoTN solely for the achievements (which were lacking..) but I agree that they might generate more revenue.

Posted by johhnymayhem - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 4:14 AM
You have no idea how many games I sell at GameStop that people trade in a few days later just for achievements.

Posted by slimmer - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 5:42 AM
Dont buy just rent from GF, I have 17,935 .
But I wont do 360 over PC for acheivments because mouse and graphics come first.

Posted by ManOfTeal - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 6:15 AM
I like the idea of achievements. They do add a replayability factor into a game. However some games....I'm talking about F.E.A.R. here, have achievements that are damn near imposible to get....that kind of sucks.....and the fact that many of these games only give you achievements by going online kinda sucks too because unless the game's online play is popular getting online achievments is damn near impossible to....I guess that's part of the draw to get you to play online but.......

I'm just saying......

I love the achievement system, and I hope they do more contests like the one earlier this year---I got a free copy of Fusion Frenzy 2 just by having a high gamerscore. It's not a great game, but it was free!

Posted by Y0uthinasia - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 6:57 AM
the achievements aren't for bragging rights

I just like to unlock acheivements because it feels like I've actually achieved something, and just because they're fun to get.

it's just my opinion and when you say that they're for "bragging rights" then you're trying to take away from the simple joy you get when you unlock the achievement you spent 5 hours in Matchmaking to get.

I own both the 360 and the PS3 and I can tell you I will always buy the 360 game if it's released on both consoles. Having the achievements adds a great dimension to the game and with some games will make you replay, or play in different ways you normally wouldn't. It's just more FUN. I think it's also nice to have games with really tough achievements, it adds diversity and caters to a variety of gamers.

You too, huh bleahy? I'd expected more from you.

What more did you expect? Achievements are great. It's why Sony is copying Microsoft with trophies in Home.

Posted by staychisel - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 10:30 AM
Letters2Kay, just stop talking at this point.

Posted by AltairDarknight - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 11:59 AM
Letter2Kay, get a life Douche. You got owned by G4 in plain sight, so stop trying to redeem yourself. Go play your PS3 or something XD

As for acheivements, I think they're great. But some games do make it too difficult to obtain them. They add replayability to games that DO have online and otherwise. I personally get as many as I can not for gamerscore, but for the fact that it shows you've completed the game to it's fullest. They also keep people playing the games for as long as possible, especially for online play. If it were'nt for acheivements, I wouldn't play online half as much as I do.
