Official: Europe Gets New 40GB PS3

The rumors, in this case, were true: There is a 40Gig PS3. It will cost less than previous models. And it is not backward compatible.

The new model PS3 will be available in Europe on October 10th.

The new PS3 features upgradeable firmware allowing "new features and functionality to be added to the system as time progresses." A recent firmware update, for example, enabled PS3 to upscale DVD’s played on the system to full 1080P High Definition.

The introduction of the new PS3 has been determined following user feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners. The new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port.

According to Sony, "The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas)."

TheFeed is batting .500 when it comes to big rumors. We called Bungie/Microsoft wrong (and still can't fully believe it) but we got the PS3 European price cut correct.

I'm not sure why Sony would say that this model is "no longer backwards compatible"

Backwards compatibility in all european consoles is done through software not the emotion chip, so this should in no way affect backwards compatibility.

Also all new PS3 consoles are moving to the software emulator to cut costs.

the 60 gig ps3 is the true elite ps3 of them all, has everything including EE, what else do you need other than a laptop harddrive from Newegg.com?

uh...that pretty much settled it for me. I still hadn't decided which system to get (360 or PS3), but this sealed the deal.

No backwards compatibility is the most ignorant thing they could have possibly done with this new model.

Even when it looks like Sony is going to do something right they mess it up somehow...this is discouraging.

This could be a kinda of a blunder on sony's part not having backwards compatibility. It doesn't really bother me so much since i still own a ps2, but what about the average consumer that doesn't really know about video game consoles? Sure they could do some research about it (which they should do), but how about the people who don't invest the time to do so? So when they goto the store they are not in the know and skip over it cause there in the belief that there kid, or grandkid can't play there old games on it and don't purchase it altogether.
I might be thinking too deep into this but it does make sense in my head;that most people want the most for there money and may not see that in the 40gig PS3.

if i were sony, I would do the same, I don't what's the whole damn deal
it's a next gen system, if you're gonna play old games on it, might aswell not buy one at all.
idk, I guess it's a big bad thing now because people have to find something bad to say about every move sony makes.

has anyone seen foklores reviews? THir so weird, look at this:

ign gave it a 9.0! game something(forgot website,go to n4g.com to see) gave it a 9 aswell!

however, two other websites less commen gave it a 4.2, and 7.0.

weird huh, how can the difference be so great? UNless....

I agree with you Spike. If you want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2. Most people own one already, so backwards compatibility shouldn't be a big deal. Sony makes a move to lower the price on the PS3 and people still bitch and complain about it.

As far as reviews go, I would take a game review by a website or magazine with a grain of salt as far as authenticity goes. Those reviews are being made by individuals that are being paid for their opinions. I don't even know those people, let alone trust their judgement on something that involves money. Bias and fringe benefits are too often a factor in one's ultimate perception of a game.

I kinda think this is a dumb idea cuz me personaly play my ps2 games knowing I have a 60gb I would've been piss waiting on a cheaper model to find no bc, well I don't know that's a kind of a bummer and I don't think this will sell.

hmmm,another move from sony but like all you guys said, who really cares for backwards capabillities? x360 does not have backwards capabillities so why make it a big deal with the ps3? i got my ps2, ps2 and baby psp and i just got my new 60gb mom ps3 and lovin it so much. not really in to all the drama with different ps3 and stuff, all i want to do is just get a large hdd from newegg.com and gettting ready for gran turismo, MGS, killzone and rachet. hey, i need friends on my psn, add me, heavenlykid

the 360 does have BC, but it's software emulation (which you need the hdd for). I guess most ppl feel that if you drop between $300-$600 for a console it better have enough features to justify the purchase.

This new 40gb will be b/c with future updates just like anti robot pope said in the first comment, the x360 didn't have b/c when it first came out but now most original xbox games work on the x360.

it makes sense...ever since i got a ps3 I haven't played ps2 games at all I mean I guess its nice to know that you can play your old games when you want but you'll probably forget all about them. Or you could cough up the extra cash for the 80 gig =P apparently they are using software for the ps3 backwards compatibility anyways.

why would sony spend their money on B/C?

Why do you buy a ps3? For next gen games.

think of it as this.

do you really wanna beat god of war 2 or buy the sims:castaway when you can buy assasins creed, drake's fortune, need for speed, etc.

I just don't get it, it's not a big deal.

Who is gonna go buy a ps3 and then just play ps2 games on it while you can get way better games?

frist you want a price drop you now have one but OH NOES! no BC this sux hey maybe I would be bitching with you guys but since I already have a 60 gig PS3 im not to mad about this and Spike playing assasins creed and drake's fortune is good and all since I can't wait to play those games but at the same time it is nice to also play your PS2 games once and awhile even I still play my PS2 and heck my PS1 games on the PS3

They don't want to let everyone know that this model is 100 pounds cheaper, but they sure as hell want you to know that it doesn't have ps2 bc. fanboy g4 idiots.

100 Million PS2s say that enough people have ps2s to not have this be an issue. STFUAJPG.
