Freestyle 101: Cormega

Posted by Frank Meyer - Tuesday, October 02, 2007 12:00 PM

Hip hop heads first heard of Queensbridge, New York rapper Cormega when Nas shouted him out on "One Love" on 1994's Illmatic then put him on "Affirmative Action" on the follow-up, It Was Written. Industry politics kept his debut album, The Testament, from being released until almost a decade after being recorded, so fans didn’t get an official debut from the MC until 2001’s The Realness. He followed with True Meaning, the rarities collection Hustler/Rapper, and the compilation Legal Hustle. Since then he has released a collaboration album with Lake called My Brother's Keeper, has an all-instrumental collection called The Legal Hustle Presents Got Beats out on October 23, and a CD/DVD entitled Who Am I? out on November 20.

So to say Freestyle 101 was honored to have this mega-talent stop by and kick an impromptu rhyme over a stoney Messiaz beat is truly an understatement. During a rare trip through L.A., ‘Mega was kind enough to stop by Reef Studios and we have the pics to prove it on our behind-the-scenes photo gallery. You can rant and rave about them in the Freestyle Forums.

Stay tuned for future Freestyle 101s with Master P and Romeo, Bizarre of D-12, Glasses Malone, Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship, and many more every Tuesday at 3 p.m. EST. Plus, check us out in the new Apple Nano commercial and the mention in Steve Jobs’ Apple recent keynote speech.

Nas only said that because they were beefin at the time. They patched that shit up.

It's funny as I coming to this site I was wondering when they were gonna have Cormega on here...and low and behold.

Don't sleep on Cormega, he makes some nice albums. His freestyle wasn't the greatest I've ever heard, but really don't sleep on him.

Also....we all know Nas is the best thing to come out of QB if not all of New York...but Cormega holds his own.

That was a good verse he just spit, but I really gotta give props to the Messiaz for another hot beat. That was hot.

It's better to keep it short and simple then to be long-winded and wack, you feel me? This is the best episode of freestyle 101 since Guru's episode recently, you feel me?
