PS3 Controller Refines Rumble

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 8:24 AM

Buried deep in 1up's (admittedly fascinating) hands-on with Metal Gear Solid 4 is a little tidbit of info on the upcoming rumbling Sixaxis controller for the PlayStation 3.

Apparently, it's more than just a new Dualshock; the controller's rumble has become more precise: "As explosions rattled around Snake, we could actually feel the direction from which they were coming based on what part of the controller vibrated."

So more than just an on/off switch for the rumble pack. Sweet.

How long does the battery last with the rumble turned on? Just curious.

Posted by phoenix777 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 8:54 AM

battery life is indeed a concern. also, if you're playing the game without a rumble controller, how will this input be conveyed? i'm all for rumble (if it serves a purpose other than just shaking my hands), but not at the expense of alienating those who choose not to buy the new controller.

Posted by gamesta - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:03 AM

I've heard that with rumble the control will last for 15 hours.

Posted by 360fanboyssmokecrack - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:05 AM

15 is what i heard too

Posted by TalyngarTheBlack - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:08 AM

Im hoping for 20 since the current Sixaxis runs for 30, but I could do with 15. I'll probably buy 2 and keep one charging at all times if my buddies and I aren't playing Warhawk.

@TalyngarTheBlack

Thats A Really Good Idea

Posted by milhouse91 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:33 AM

Way to get excited over N64 technology.

Posted by Dukefnnukem - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:34 AM

This has some really cool potential applications. Example: let’s say you have a fighting game that you can use grappling moves in. With this combined with sixaxis you can feel how much stress is being applied to the opponent and feel a bone break. I think this well be really cool.

Posted by Mickit - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:37 AM

And that was directed towards milhouse

i'm curious at how this will work. and will even be effective to have directional rumble?

Way to get excited over N64 technology.

lol didnt you read?

Posted by 360sucksass - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 10:44 AM

Truthfully this sounds cool for squad abased games or any action title where expolsions can pop at any minute.

@colourings
If this is such old news, show me a post or something where it was stated earlier or shut the f*ck up about shit that should'nt concern you.

@milhouse91

N64 did'nt have anything quite like this,
and that was when I was a nintendo supporter,
and all they had was a rumble pack you had to shove in your controller, third parties were making rumble installed controllers and even then it was not at this level, Dickhead.

Posted by milhouse91 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 10:49 AM

Okay, I misspoke because I didn't read the whole article. The precision rumble sounds kinda cool, but is it really something to get that excited over? The base technology is over 10 years old. The usefulness and potential applications seem limited. I'm just saying that Sony should perhaps focus on getting some more killer apps to the market instead of grasping at the straws of an outdated peripheral technology.

Posted by icedbirdman - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 10:52 AM

hopefully they refine the motion sensors!!!!

Posted by slimmer - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 11:13 AM

Great cool whatever the l1 and l2 buttons have got to go, my finger wants to slip off as it is so I wonder how hard it will be to keep them on with rumble?
Please some one make a 360 style ps3 controller for sale.

Posted by TalyngarTheBlack - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 11:20 AM

^^^ Hopefully this never happens. The Dualshock 2 is still the greatest controller which is almost the same as the SixA except for the L2/R2. The 360 controller and its triggers really aren't useful aside from shooters.

Posted by Letters2Kay - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 11:23 AM

Surround rumble? THERE'S a reason to use rumble...

Posted by staychisel (BANNED) - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 11:38 AM

TaylyngarTheblack, i thought dualshock was cool until i got a 360. and i'm not just saying that or being a fanboy either. when i play vice city on my ps2 now, i think it is not even comparable anymore.

Posted by StrongestSaiyan - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 11:46 AM

That makes the new controller even more worthwhile if it does more than just varying strengths of rumble.

Posted by TalyngarTheBlack - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 12:25 PM

staychisel I can respect your opinion. Personally for me theres no comparison. I play on my friends 360 a lot and nothing beats when I go home and pick up my PS controllers. It just feels better to me, the buttons and the sticks.

Posted by Superstar90 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 12:43 PM

the buttons on any PS system (including PSP) have no depth at all. I cant stand it, the r1/l1 and r2/l2 was a good idea, but they need to form around your finger like 360's and even the GC's. the only thing i like about ps controllers are the analogs.

Posted by Softmeat - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 12:44 PM

can i say its a next gen console now? will the 360 get a next gen console cuz its the only console with controllers that were last get...

Posted by Spike47 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 12:48 PM

milhouse, sony can't pop up a killer app in the middle of december, they're job now is to drop the price and make sure ms does'nt offer the dvelopers that are making their exclsuives a blojob in return for the game to be featured on the 360.

they can only make deals now with other companies to make other exclsuives in 2008 or 2009.

and that heis doing.

killzone 2, mgs4, drake's fortune, ratchet and clank5, eye of judgement with new ps3 eye, infamous,ff13 , ff versus, the agency, ncsoft mmo,

they have alot of exclusives for 2008, and they're lineup matches or even surpasses ms's lineup for 2008.

this is cool, it's gonna be the best rumble out there!!

Posted by Spike47 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 12:51 PM

I don't like the 360 controllers, their too complicated.

ab,y,x,black, white, r2,etc.

I feel the ps controlers have always been more comfterable and easy to learn to use for beginners.

I don't like the psp controllers either.

Posted by milhouse91 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 1:17 PM

I find the 360 controllers to be very comfortable ergonomically, but the finish is a little too smooth. The PS3 lineup sounds good, spike, but there's only 3 of those I'd be interested in: Killzone 2, MGS4 and FF 13.

Posted by milhouse91 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 1:25 PM

@thetoo1est
I own a 360 because there are actually games for it. There aren't any PS3 exclusives that make it worth buying the system. Maybe next year their big releases won't turn out like Lair.

Posted by OBAMAISBUSHpart3 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 1:36 PM

It's about time the the pimp Sony finally came to their senses to bring back the rumble feature that they did steal from Nintendo just like they also stole the motion sensor technology from Nintendo also (which i think sucks way more than what Nintendo innovated and created for their Wii gameplay controllers),you feel me? To me the rumble feature will never get old and played out and i LOVE the soothing and relaxing feeling that only the vibration technology (rumble) gives me for my hands especially when my hands got carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of extremely addictive and very epic and intense online and offline gaming sessions that i be having where i have to make myself literally stop playing before it too late, you feel me? The rumble feature is merely a band-aid if you will for carpal tunnel syndrome that might damage your hands permanently for life if you don't take much needed breaks from hardcore gaming, you feel me?

why do people even mention lair, i couldve told you that suck before they even fu*kin made the game , a wide variety of people are not into that goth bullsh*t

Posted by deleted_00F7AF04-F47B-4A59-BCC2-2D429C739029 - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 1:47 PM

they should just put a fu*kin dragon in gta4 or halo, i dont need a game set back in ancient times to have a fu*kin dragon do i?

Posted by Nintendo_Wii_S_Owner - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 2:30 PM

thanks Sony you stole from Nintendo,......AGAIN!!!This time from TWO GENERATIONS AGO!!!!(Nintendo 64 if you dont know what i mean)

Posted by bigshane69 - Thursday, September 27, 2007 9:11 AM

yes about time!!!!!!

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, September 27, 2007 10:52 AM

sony didnt steal from Nintendo, nintendo made a rumble pack, sony made dualshock, thats like mono to stereo, and now the new rumble ps3 controllers will have SURROUND SOUND rumble built into them, so if someone shoots you, you know what direction it came from and what kind of gun thier shooting you with based on the strenth of the rumble since it will be more precise. Sony pwns again

Posted by Spike47 - Thursday, September 27, 2007 12:02 PM

that's true, you can't just pull out that " you copied me " crap when it is redefined.

Posted by asianondrums - Friday, September 28, 2007 9:01 PM

they should redefine PS3 triggers kinda like the 360 triggers "just" for shooters, everything else, u can keep the same. but yet, they also have the mouse/keyboard controller for the PS3 so i guess that can work for PS3 shooters. but yeah, id still rather play RPGs and other games with the PS3 controllers.
