When Freestyle 101 got the opportunity to book 17-year-old hip-pop sensation Sean Kingston, we considered it a major coup. I mean, the guy just had the #1 single in the country and his debut album debuted #1 on the Billboard charts. This is MAJOR for us.
But when he walked in, chose the most gangsta beat in the Messiaz arsenal, and rapped like an NYC street vet, we realized this was a coup for entirely different reasons. SEAN KINGSTON CAN RAP! And I don’t mean that dancehall sing-rap style you hear on “Beautiful Girls.” The dude can spit street sh*t like a pro, has a mean style in the vein of Jay-Z or Memphis Bleek, flows like hot lava, and still manages to throw in a killer chorus hook on the spot! The best part is that he’s rapping so hard, yet throws in references to Xbox, Crayola and Sesame Street! To sum it up, Sean Kingston blew us away.
Sean arrived at The Engine Room in Hollywood with his DJ Hype-King to promote his new single, “Me Love” and raise awareness for New Yorkers for Children, where he recently performed to help raise money for educational programs for NYC area foster care kids. He chatted about his quick rise to fame via MySpace and the ‘Net, and seemed genuinely enthused to let fans know that he’s a true hip hop head, with roots in Jamaica and Miami. Check out he photos in our behind-the-scenes gallery for a glimpse into the session.
Oh…and did we mention he curses for the first time ever in a rap here?
